It’s almost a bummer when he does a review of a game I already know I want to play because I’m big on organically experiencing games so I can’t watch it until I finish said game.
Yeah generally I watch Skillup reviews after I beat the game if it's as story and experience based as this one, but just look at the title of the video and Steam review percentage to get an idea of what the public's perception of the game is. I love Ralph but he can overexplain some story or gameplay components to the point of spoiling stuff which isn't necessary to be explained for a review. On multiplayer or games where story is less important that's chill and I watch them as they come out, but for a game like this I'm absolutely glad I waited to beat it to watch the review.
@@Sirrincai So I bought and finished the game and then watched this video later. And I am SO glad I didn't watch the video footage or even listen to it after the first 4 minutes earlier. Shill Up explained and showed WAY TOO MUCH here. Also, this review is way too long for such a game and he still somehow didn't cover the issues with the game although they are not egregious.

i love this channel so much. It's sort of everything i ever wanted a gaming outlet to be: enamored with games as an artform, mostly conflict-of-interest free, experimental, impassioned, critical of corporate influence, etc. bravo to you lads
I was already interested in the premise in the first place but the comparison to Outer wilds just completely sold me on the game and i'm looking forward to playing it, thank you for the review and recommendation
I was sold when you talked about turning off the lights, putting on the handbrake and turning off the engine. That immersion is crucial. Can't wait to play this.

I truly believe the movie Stalker to be the single greatest film ever made. Absolutely beautiful in story, character, cinematography, and message. Highly recommend
That ending for the video genuinely sent a chill down my spine in the best way possible. With Final End Times in my ears, I was smiling ear to ear like a madman as I added the game to my cart. You are incredible, and I was actually surprised I apparently wasn't subscribed to you up until now - which is funny, because I ALWAYS check your channel for reviews! Thank you for an excellent review!
Roadside picnic, one of my favorite books. They also said a primary inspiration was annihilation and the rest of the Southern Shore series. Which is another one of my favorites.
@anthonylesley982 Depends, it's not the easiest read, lotta run-on sentences. Are you a fan of SCP? Because it very much feels like a group dealing with a single SCP. People say book 2 is the worst since not much really happens, but it's my favorite of the series. Book 1 is an introduction, book 2 is about trying to understand, and book 3 is madness and feelings.
The fact that you link it in some way to Outer Wilds means an instant buy from me. That tune immediately gave me goosebumps the second it started playing man..
All of the reviews you do from suicide squad,Anthem, destiny etc. its reviews like these where I can really discern your excitement and passion in this industry. I’ve thought about personally doing these sorts of video game reviews but when I see videos like these where your ideas are so perfectly captured in the way you disect what makes these games so great I would have nothing new to bring to conversation. You are truly an autour for the RUclips review/gaming space and these kinds of videos are the reason I come back to watch every time. Thank you Ralph ( I will be reading roadside picnic just like I read Neil Gaimen Norse mythology for god of war) Ps - sorry for the glaze but this video is just phenomenal and I can’t wait to play pacific drive
The idea that driving a car across The Pacific Northwest is made compelling is a testament to how much mileage you can squeeze out of an idea. Rather than being a simple Point A to Point B adventure, what you outline about the game is an exploration into Nostalgia for vehicles and their Quirks. The connections you make with your first car will always stick with you, as I could feel the passion you had for that garbage station wagon with every concession you made in love for it. Well done, SkillUp.
You got me amped for this game. Had to stop the video at the 15min mark because I didn't want even small spoilers. Will watch the full vid after ive played.
Watching a Skill Up review isn't just a review, you come to watch a well scripted movie that's passionately narrated and always starts with an amazing analogy to set the tone of the review. It's sometime hard to believe this is they guy I first watched when the division came out, and he was doing the weekly vendor reviews. Love your work Ralph, and I hope it continues for a long time to come.
Really interesting the difference between the preview and the actual review. Was a lot more unsure in the preview, love that it does actual pay off in the full game
I was really hoping for an Outer Wilds mention, while watching this, and your summary (and comparison) did not disappoint. Really excited to get to try out Pacific Drive; looks like an absolute banger.
I love this review primarily because your description of the appreciation of maintenance of your jalopy perfectly describes my life long love of working on cars. Taking a car far beyond it's designed life expectancy is deeply rewarding, not just financially but emotionally as well.
I really, really, really hope they make a VR version of this game. It's perfect for it! Also, it feels like triple-A gaming is dead, and indie games and double-A games are saving us.
For me it draws comparisons to void bastards, the quirks that affect your car are like quirks that affect your character in void bastards where your character was a smoker and therefore sometimes coughs randomly which alerts enemies close to you. Tourists are like tourists in void bastards as well, enemies that explode when you get close and of course using random junk you find on runs to make upgrades. Watching this makes me wanna play start a new game n get out into the void.
Halfway through this review I was like "Skill Up loves this because its as close as we can get to MIB flashy thing-ing ourselves to replay Outer Wilds" Sure enough...

OK the Roadside Picnic analogy was I all needed. I 100% agree that people should read that story. The one chapter that is basically just a philosophical discussion about what intelligence is and how we aren't equipped to fully identity or measure it after such an event, gets me every time I go back and read it. Great review. I'll definitely be picking it up.
the handling of the game "release the brake, turn on the light, accelerate, stop, putting on the handbrake, etc... repeat" remind me a lot of Outer wilds
@@anthonylesley982 100%. It’s creative, it’s well written, it’s formed a whole basis for so much amazing media in the years since. The movie is great, Stalker games owe their existence to both.

You have all the craft of a skiled writer and none of the snobbery. I love your work through and through! You dont just review, you make choice artistic decisions!
I love the fact that when you review games that deserve a lot of respect you just raise the quality bar of the video and produce something as beautiful as the game itself. You're truly one of a kind Ralph
came for a game review, leave with a book recommendation
Same. Just ordered the book thanks to the Shill

Hell yeah. Glad to see you cover this, I feel like there isn't enough buzz around it. The demo was fantastic.
You had me at "two brothers". Somehow I knew you're talking about the Stugatskis. Roadside Picnic is one of my favourite novels.
And after watching your thoughts I'm so eager to try this out. Getting it tomorrow when it's out.
Is it actually a good book
I love how you tie in a dope ass story as a hook for the review. I wasn't all that interested in this one, but now I'm debating picking it up
The game is based on the story
Is it a good book
The moment this game gets a VR release (or a motion-control enabled native VR mod), is gonna be a magical moment for sure!
If only VR wasn't so niche. I'm a believer too!
You can play it in Vr with preydogs UEVR mod! That mod allows you to play all unreal 4/5 games in vr with options for motion controls too!
I was thinking this, not sure whether to play it now or wait for vr mods. It’s would be so good, it’s almost like they reversed a vr native game to flatscreen
Seriously no one does a review with as much careful consideration as much as this channel. God I love these videos.
Shill Up convinced me in like first 4 minutes. Will watch the rest once I play through this myself.
I'm so glad this turned out so well. I played the demo and was so impressed I pre-ordered it on Steam.
I’m gonna go ahead and congratulate Skillup now. Only 7 thousand subscribers to go until 1 million! I started watching this channel when I was crazy about Division 2, been watching ever since.
I mean, when you have around 200K subscriber other channel to give you a starting boost initial growth from 7K is not that big of a problem.
I just wanted to thank you Skill Up! I had a reading slump for a good few months and your recommendation got me back into the groove. Roadside Picnic is a fantastic read!
The intro gives off real Annihilation vibes, I loved that movie!!
i love this channel so much. It's sort of everything i ever wanted a gaming outlet to be: enamored with games as an artform, mostly conflict-of-interest free, experimental, impassioned, critical of corporate influence, etc.
bravo to you lads
Literally been on the lookout for your review of this, and seeing it be strongly recommended makes me so happy. Game looks right up my alley.
Its video's like this that remind me why I continue to watch shillup, amazing work with this one!
Fuck yeah I was waiting for this review. Thank you shill up!
😂
I was already interested in the premise in the first place but the comparison to Outer wilds just completely sold me on the game and i'm looking forward to playing it, thank you for the review and recommendation
*video opens with historical anecdote* we're so fucking back
I give this review a 5/7. Not enough boat metaphors.
I was sold when you talked about turning off the lights, putting on the handbrake and turning off the engine. That immersion is crucial. Can't wait to play this.
As soon as he mentioned the fear of the depths or space, I was really hoping for an Outer Wilds comparison.
If Ralph likens something to Outer Wilds, I am immediately sold.
29:30 that sound was likely a worn hydraulic steering pump. That or the mechanical steering rack, both of which can make those types of noises
Played the demo, quite a unique experience I haven't had in a long time! Great to see devs trying different things
I truly believe the movie Stalker to be the single greatest film ever made. Absolutely beautiful in story, character, cinematography, and message. Highly recommend
Maybe top 20
Agreed
Yeah
Just finished Death Stranding (my favorite game of all time now) so going from walking focused to driving focused will be fun!
That ending for the video genuinely sent a chill down my spine in the best way possible. With Final End Times in my ears, I was smiling ear to ear like a madman as I added the game to my cart. I can't wait to play it. What an in-depth, excellent review!
Is it actually worth the reading
Thank you Ralph ( I will be reading roadside picnic just like I read Neil Gaimen Norse mythology for god of war)
Ps - sorry for the glaze but this video is just phenomenal and I can’t wait to play pacific drive
Safe to say this just jumped up my priority list-fantastic review!
You got me amped for this game. Had to stop the video at the 15min mark because I didn't want even small spoilers. Will watch the full vid after ive played.
This is like Jalopy meets Stalker (1979) meets Outer Wilds. Cool, will buy
I’ve been so excited for this game, I hope someone makes a VR mod for it, looks like it’d fit well!
You sold me on Outer Wilds, and now I will be buying my first 'driving' game as well based on your infectious passion. Keep it up my man.
I’ve been sold on this game since it’s reveal, but that outer wilds comparison… definitely gonna be my next game once I finish up yakuza 8
Same here! The only problem I'm having is how I'll balance Helldivers 2 and the upcoming Final Fantasy Rebirth 😭
When I played bombrush Cryberfunk I fully transitioned into thinking indie games are not only AA quality now but sometimes triple aaa
That would be perfect. Sony needs to get this on psvr2,they're funding it anyway.
The Russian film "Stalker" is a classic if you don't want to read a book to beef up your enjoyment of this game.
Ok
Thanks!
Halfway through this review I was like "Skill Up loves this because its as close as we can get to MIB flashy thing-ing ourselves to replay Outer Wilds"
Sure enough...
Bro , the ending warmed my heart , good stuff 👍🏻
I love how you put subnautica and outer wilds(and now this) in a different bubble of their own. Subnautica and outer wilds are truly unique experiences, if this falls in the same category I can't wait to play it.
I would suggest that Return of the Obra Dinn should be added to that group as well
@@TheSergio1021I really don’t see what Obra Dinn has in common with that genre, aside from being a good indie game…
@@AngryBoozer single player, exploration-focused, mystery-solving story with unique mechanics/gimmicks that work to elevate its themes or plot
Not going to lie, it’s nice to see this type of old school Skill Up intro again. I don’t care what anyone says, they have a certain charm to them
Yes! Only bummer is that the physical version is set to release in April.
P.s. just preordered it.
Physical? Like disc? Like CD? Like compact disc??
@@toptiertech7291yup. Target has it up for preorder
Yup. Target has it up for preorder.
One of the most apt and brilliant descriptions for Roadside Picnic I've heard to this day. Fantastic work Ralph.
Yeah
Gah I was so looking forward to this review cause I’m PRETTY sure Ralph is the one who got me hooked on subnautica. Great to see its great
(Edit) AND THE OUTER WILDS PULL? Dammit Ralph now I’ve gotta buy this game and make it my personality roo
Man, I was already completely sold on this. And then your final comparison game… extra double sold me!
i think this is your best review
OK the Roadside Picnic analogy was I all needed. I 100% agree that people should read that story. The one chapter that is basically just a philosophical discussion about what intelligence is and how we aren't equipped to fully identity or measure it after such an event, gets me every time I go back and read it.
Great review. I'll definitely be picking it up.
This needs to be a VR game
I kinda love this new ralph + Austin channel concept, so much content 😂❤
the handling of the game "release the brake, turn on the light, accelerate, stop, putting on the handbrake, etc... repeat" remind me a lot of Outer wilds
You were 10 seconds in before I knew you were talking about the Strugatsky Brothers. It's such a great book.
Is it worth the read
@@anthonylesley982 100%. It’s creative, it’s well written, it’s formed a whole basis for so much amazing media in the years since.
The movie is great, Stalker games owe their existence to both.
@@sydneys207 okay thanks will look into it
Hell yeah! The greatest game ever made Outer Wilds has a worthy successor!!! You sold me!
Appreciate the intro Ralph. Strugatsky brothers are my all-time favorite writers. They have so many great books although to really understand most of them you gotta have some USSR-life experience. Strongly recommend "Monday Begins on Saturday" book.
Okay
seeing mentions of outer wilds in the comments. i think i should just play this game without watching any of it.
Really Excited, I live in Seattle, and the PNW my whole life I wanna support these Devs, ready to go for the weekend!
You're the absolute GOAT reviewer ShillUp! You always sell me on games that you like, cause I can feel your passion for them and it's infectious. I love the way you structure your reviews too. You build up a sense of curiosity so easily, and I'm hooked within a minute. Love the fact that you're reading books to get a better understanding of the source material too. It's why you're number 1 to me. Also, the dark and mysterious with splashes of colour look of this game looks perfect for my new C3 OLED too. Appreciate ya, mate! I'm all in on this game! Cheers
This video once again reminded me that you make the best video game reviews on this platform.
Bravo!
You have an awesome ability to describe the feel of the game in words.
I was already sold on this game just by looking at the trailer but you sold it to me again
the presentation style of this video got me really intrigued to check this out. Nice job Shill team
You mastered video making, Ralph, congratulations. I admire you a lot
I remember seeing this game years ago in very early access. It was a completely different game where you hunted down giant monsters and leviathans. Crazy how far this game has come. Everything about it looks so interesting! I’m very excited to play this!
Literally cheered at the comparison near the end of the video, looking forward to this one
Love that you gave a book suggestion to enrich the experience of the game. I’m driving through the desertous landscape of eastern-Utah in a couple days and need an audio book to keep me awake. 😀
What a time to be alive. A new Rocksteady game is not recommended but a unknown indie game is. Bittersweet but it is what it is. Happy for Pacific Drive and Ironwood Studio.
Goddamitt skillup i am so proud of you! I felt the similarity to outer wilds like halfway thru your review and i went to look and see if there was anything on that online. Didn't see anything comparing the two. You are the MAN!
Just double-checking if it has been assumed already that Skill Up is the best damn videogame channel in RUclips? So entertaining, so well written, inspiring. Keep being awesome, Skill Up Team. Keep being awesome.
Thanks for taking the time to make this awesome video. I can't wait to play it 1 day 2 hours to go.
A Ralph review is always good, a Ralph review of a game he loves is always great!
couldn't wait for you to make that final comparison. now I want to play the game so badly, thanks for the recommendation!
That Outer Wilds ending song coming in clutch at the end and elevating the review to new heights! Chef's Kiss.
The tourist throwing stuff story was pretty good, "can you not!?" lol. I've really been enjoying your vids lately. Thanks for entertaining and educating me. I appreciate all your hard work and wit.
Great review. I wasn't sure about the gameplay loop, but the atmosphere, art and storytelling can make the seemingly arduous gameplay feel rewarding. Also the comparisons to Stalker, Twin Peaks, Alan Wake and Outer wilds really sold it to me. This is right up my alley.
Excellent review shill up. Truly the king at reviews imo. I'm super stoked for this one.
Glad he was able to fit another Outer Wilds review at the end lmao. We were due. I’m sold!
