Yeah I've been a Tolkien devotee since junior-high days (late '60s, when I read LotR end to end a dozen times, appendices and all), and from the start I've had rather qualified appreciation for the Elves. Sure they have some wonderful qualities and talents and all, but in a lot of ways they're as much a hot mess as we humans/Men are. 😄

It can't be understated how much it helps having all of these names of houses and their important people, and where they were geographically, contextualized visually on a map while they're being explained. The times when I read the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, etc. it was like slashing my way through a jungle of names, relationships and places too difficult to comprehend well enough to picture.

Fingolfin and Finrod are the greatest elves imo. I really wish Fingolfin would have been there with Beren and Finrod when they were captured by Sauron. I have a feeling Sauron would have gotten smoked and Finrod would have lived to join the Fellowship later in the 3rd age!

Thingol gets the short-shrift in every Tolkien video I have ever seen. He is one of the first 3 sentient beings to ever exist, he was one of 3 liviong beings beings who first saw the bliss of Valinor, and he was the only being ever to forsake etenral bliss for the sake of love. Pretty bad-ass himself if you ask me and definitely deserving of all the respect he ever demanded. Forget the race of men, he was one of the few people who had the right to say to the likes of FIngon, "You an't seen nothing kid!".

You could see the sons of Finarfin as Finrod being the nice brother, Angrod being the catty brother, (will be nice to your face but bitch about you behind your back and has alot of influence) and Aegnor as the quiet, intimidating, military disciplined, bite is worse than his bark type of brother.
No wonder Celeborn had to keep a low profile when marrying their sister. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Galadriel was not of pure noldor blood. Her grandmother is Indis a Vanyar princess. Her mother is a princess of the Teleri. That makes her 50% noldor 25% vanyar and 25% teleri. So she may not be bound to noldor customs. AND Celeborn was Sindar. He definitely doesn't abide by Noldor customs

    • @annariijarvi8866

Umm… 50% Teleri from her mother, 25% Noldor and 25% Vanyar from her father. And her maternal great-uncle was Elu Thingol who was Sindar. She was a Noldor princess whose ancestry was mostly not Noldorian so you might be right that she didn’t follow all of their customs, especially with her spending so much time in Doriath and marrying Sindarin Celeborn.

Loving your channel more and more! I'm new to your channel, however, I've been into Tolkien since 1981. However, I haven't been able to read anything by Tolkien other than The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion (although I read it twice, back who knows when). In what book can I read more about Andreth and the elves? I tried about 40 years ago, to read his Unfinished Tales, though they were incomplete according to Christopher Tolkien, but after that, I know more books on unfinished tales have been published. Where might I read about Andreth and Finrod Felagund, please? I'd love to know.... Fun fact, since 1981, every autumn (or fall as we Americans say -- and I'm 1/2 Spanish and 1/2 American -- I read Tolkien only in English) I used to read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings every fall for 20-30 years, until I saw that I had to read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings separately, as every time I read all 4 books one after the other, an old relative would die. I know this is superstition but I, about to turn 60, only have one old relative left and I want her to stay alive. So when I read or watch The Hobbit, I take some time before reading or watching The Lord of the Rings, and I'm warming up with your videos before starting to read The Silmarillion once more. So where, my Rainbow David, can I read about this story? If there are any typos, it's because I've been trying to train my Spanish mobile spellcheck into being bilingual, but it's a tough task.... Thank you, my dear Tolkien enthusiast and Melon!
By the way, I'm an English linguist, snd also a philologist, which is why I love Tolkien and language. Sadly, I didn't specialize in the same dead languages he did. I was only offered Old English (reason why I recognized it immediately in Rohirrim names), but that was it.

Leave it to a philologist and expert on Anglo-Saxon Studies to turn an interesting romance plot into a vehicle for a discussion on the philosophy of existence.

I always found it a weird worldbuilding detail that there’s 13:00 “an eleven custom that the Noldor only marry during times of peace”. Cool idea but doesn’t work. Why would the Noldor have that custom? This is the first and only war they have ever been apart of.
Unless there were wars during the great migration to the west but that definitely would have been mentioned.
Also, the first 300 years after the Battle of Glory are practically close to times of peace. Besides skirmishes & hosts sent by Morgoth, there isn’t a big battle until Sudden Flame. So those 300 years surely should have been considered wedding time appropriate. Especially in Doriath that entire kingdom is safe and at peace.

You are fantastically pleasant and pointed. I appreciate people who choose to generally specify things in which they have knowledge. And you have been, ridiculously awesome.
