Hard Rock Blasting - Awesome Mine Blasting Moments

  • There are a few reasons why mine blasting is done in mining pits:
It's an efficient way to break up and loosen hard rock so it can be more easily excavated. Drilling and mechanical excavation of solid rock is extremely slow and costly compared to using explosives.
Blasting creates rock fragmentation that makes loading and hauling operations faster and more efficient. The broken rock can be more easily loaded into trucks by shovels and excavators.
It allows access to deeper deposits of minerals and metals that would be impossible to reach by drilling and excavating alone. Explosives can break up rock much further below the surface.
In open pit mines, blasting also helps to create the steps and benches in the pit walls to access deeper layers. Controlled blasting creates a stable wall slope.

The shot at 2:57 is unusual in that they used det cord to connect the charges...must be a rather old film. Nonel aka shock tube has almost completely replaced both det cord and electrical detonators for initiating shots since it was introduced in the 1970's, since it's cheaper than det cord and safer than electrical systems, which are subject to interference.

We call that rifling when it shoots straight up like that. I am not a blasting expert but I have been crushing rock for almost 15 years and witnessed a lot of shots. A couple bad ones two. When the y rifle like that it shoots rock really high and can damage everything in the pit. We have had rocks hit a house a half mile away. In this video when they all rifled like that my guess it was a very remote shot with no collateral damage in the area, so they didn’t use stemmings.
