Have you seen the documentary? They were great, just ordinary people woken up by the sounds of the ship beeping in alarm and the helicopters and they just opened their doors to the passengers, even with a language barrier. It's the best part, right with the Coast Guard railing the Captain's ass.
@Lalogue - not only was he unprepared for this job, he had basically also worked on fucking this up actively in the first place. The ship would've never sunk without his extra actions. But yeah, you could say his lack of competence also lead to these narcissistic actions of self-aggrandizement which then led to the catastrophe.

@@thert.hon.thelordnicholson7261 I fully see your point, maybe I didn't put myself across as well as I should've done. It's disgusting how he left his position as quickly as he could while leaving others to die. He signed up to protect and serve the people on the ship and drastically failed to do just that. He knew what his roll was in that position before he accepted that post. I feel the shock of the situation he found himself to be in overloaded him and his own drive for self-preservation took over. He is a failure and deserves prison time. The point I am making is that it's easy to shout commands at someone when you're not the one who can't see his hand in front of his face hearing screams coming from all around and water half way up your waist.
william jafta ...That’s why Capt De Falco is a leader & in charge. There is a code of honour & a duty of responsibility to the people on that ship. Forget the philosophical bullshit & do the right thing. If every soldier, pilot & sailor had your mindset in WW2, we’d all be speaking German now.
@william jafta Because Schettino is SUPPOSED TO : a.Know he will have to deal with this situation b.Have the skills and training to manage that situation better than anyone on the boat. This include surviving. c.Put said skills to use in that precise situation because it is his job and his responsibility. When you're the captain of a boat, you're responsible for the lives of the people that use your boat to travel. If someone dies? You're responsible. This is why Schettino got torn a new one. A captain is supposed to quit his boat last, as if someone dies on the boat when he could have done something, he will be LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE. Is it easier to give this order when you're comfortable in your chair? Yes. But if you can't consider risking your life for people because you f***ed up, then you don't become a boat captain. Instead, you find yourself a cushy office job. But of course, you won't have a boat to show off, nor a chance to be responsible for one of the hugest, most stupid screw up in mairitime history. I also want to point out that apparently a rescuer sent by Falco climbed abroad to help people there. And now that the timeline of events has been published, everybody can notice that Schetinno downplayed the situation and waited around an hour between the moment he crashed and the moment he started the evacuation. In conclusion, he's a coward who didn't have a spine strong enough for his job, prefered for other people to risk his life while he had a bigger responsibility (a well as the skills to deal with the situation at hand), and initially made the situation WORSE.

@@MustafaKulle Personally I have studied the whole issue thoroughly, given to the hand. And, fortunately, I do NOT inform myself from the news for decades. Schettino is the least guilty of all... I report the salient data: 1) Costa (like other companies) backed, with tacit agreement, the "bows" 2) It is mathematically proven that, if the helmsman had correctly carried out Schettino’s order, the impact would not have occurred, or at most there would have been a very slight contact that would have allowed even the continuation of the cruise. 3) Who should, DID NOT inform Schettino of the error of the helmsman, therefore the Captain, at least at the beginning, could not know what really happened believing that the impact was much less important than it really was. 4) Schettino got off the ship on the LAST boat 5) The De Falco phenomenon, in an abusive way, has tried to get publicity with his phone calls (his chance of life) not being territorially competent. 6) The snake mentioned by De Falco had been underwater for over 1 hour. In order to get on board, a spear would have had to carry Schettino to the other end of the ship, and a special equipment was needed, not present. 7) the competent authority territorially (Rome) knew that Schettino was on the cliff coordinating, and they felt continuously. 8) The watertight doors (of low quality) did not hold and allowed the water to flood more compartments, where water could NEVER and had to enter. 9) The maneuver of Schettino, to lay the ship on a low bottom and very close to the coast, has allowed, the rescue of over 4 thousand people... Now I’m not saying it’s not Schettino’s fault. Something may have been omitted or wrong, but among all the participants: Company, Crew, Maritime Authorities, is the least guilty of all. I invite everyone to inquire carefully to understand REALLY what happened that night. Comment by @silviotifoso01
And then, Italy had captian like Piero Calamai of the Andrea Doria transatlantic. He coordinated the biggest sea rescue in the history, saving over 1500 souls and yet, he wanted to go down with his ship. He changed his mind only because all of his officers were ready to sink with him if he didn't save hisself. Once on board, his 2nd officer demanded to disembark by grades, from the lowest to the highest.
The irony for me here, as for a Russian, is that captains surname (Schettino) is very similar to the word “Skotina”, which means douchbag/asshole in Russian
The thing that revolts me is that in addition to being a coward, he wasted precious time raising the alarm and ordering the evacuation. He didn't even say on an initial call from Coastal Services that they hit rocks, he just said they had a power outage and everything was fine. If he had done that, maybe there would be no less deaths, or no deaths.
From what I know, he was informed later, but still didn't launched the allarm, maybe if he immediately launched the allarm then thing would have been different
The worst part is that Schettino didn't initially contact the coast guard at all, it was just because one of the passengers contacted her daughter who contacted the police that the local authorities got involved somewhat early. Otherwise, this would have very likely been a much worse catastrophe.
@@happytech0.519 Oh he knew he hit the rocks from the very beginning. The phrase "The captain goes down with the ship" exists for a reason. It's a reminder that the captain takes full responsibility for the safety of his or her crew and passengers, and in the event of emergency they will see them all safely off the ship or die trying.
I thought the first phrase was more like "The captain is the last to leave the ship" Going down with the ship meaning they failed to get people off in time.
No the captain MUST remain on the ship as long there’s anyone still onboard which in this case there was a couple asleep in their cabin trapped meaning that until they were rescued the captain is NOT leaving the bridge. The captain is the last to leave and the captain is to go down with the ship are rules that go hand in hand with each other.
It shows us the best and the worst of people, everywhere. The world needs so many more De Falcos. Incredibly we're being overrun with Schettinos and their cronies instead. Such a tragic and unnecessary loss.
To understand why the captain of the rescue vessel is so outraged, one needs to understand three things: (A) It is a sacred tradition through all martitime history that the captain leaves a sinking ship last. This is because every one aboard, working for him or not, entrusted their lives to his hands - so he is expected to save everybody before him if anything goes wrong. (B) It is also a very modern piece of maritime law than in the event of a sinking the captain is the incident commander on board while the captain of the first responding vessel is the incident commander off board (i.e. coordinating other ships for the rescue). If the captain of either vessel abandons their task (and it isn't picked up by someone who is trained, able and willing) the rescue is immediately a hundred times more difficult and cassualty will needlessly skyrocket. (C) The italian coast guard is a (para-)military organization that is run a very strict hierarchie. It was probably unfathomable to the CG captain what Schettino did, but on top of that he also had the gall to defy direct orders from the coast guard in italian waters. Schettino managed to piss off the three elements that make De Falco the man he is simoultaneously: the seafarer, the law enforcment officer and the soldier.

It angers me on an immense level to think that in the exact moment this conversation was happening and while Schettino was vomiting all of these vacant words with his ass sat on a lifeboat with a lifejacket on him there were people trapped inside the boat drowning, people severely injured, people stranded in the sea (in January at night in complete darkness) with many kids amongst them. 32 people lost their life (kids as well), 32 families were destroyed and having to live with the pain of MONTHS worth of work to find all the corpses, 32 people were helplessly trapped in the dark underwater dying scared and alone probably aware of facing death within minutes...and in the meantime the person who was in charge, who was responsible for their safety and their safe escape was on a lifeboat bringing him to land leaving everyone behind. I honestly have no idea how """captain""" Schettino has the guts to wake up in the morning and look at himself in the mirror without being disgusted by his own actions but regardless of religions and different beliefs, I personally want to believe that everything we do (good and bad) is taken care of, let it be a God or karma...it will come back to him.

While Schettino was incompetent and abandoned his duty as the captain of a ship he could at least have saved much of his reputation by listening to De Falco and go back onboard and do whatever he could. At least he would have shown to the court he did an effort to help people - however small. Now for all time he's going to be remembered as a coward. But he's chosen his fate. The Captain holds the ultimate responsibility and should be the last man off the vessel. That applies especially in an emergency, to get all the passengers and crew off the vessel or die trying. After this incident, De Falco was demoted, because the boat accident did not happen in the area he was actually in charge of, and he took control anyway because nobody else had. However, his popularity soared and he got into politics and joined the left wing of the Five Star Movement. The party at one point decided to vote to bar refugees from entering Italy, and De Falco refused, having spent much of his Coast Guard career rescuing them. He was later expelled from the party. In 2021 he joined the centre-left Centro Democratico. After this call, Schettinno did not get back aboard the ship. He was found by a police officer hiding in the rocks on shore. The officer offered to help him find a boat back, but he declined. The officer noted that he was dry. Schettinno maintained that he had slipped and fallen off the ship and landed in the life raft. After a five year trial, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison. Ten for manslaughter, 5 for causing the accident, and 1 for abandoning his duty. His incarceration began in 2017.
This demonstrates that the captain being expected to go down with their ship is not merely some myth puffed up by centuries of stories, it’s a real expectation. The question is how someone of Schettino’s obviously bad character ever gets to be captain of a ship like that in the first place.
True, though 'go down with the ship' is a bit of a misnomer. He is supposed to stay on the ship till everyone else got off, or at least everyone they could possibly get off. He is neither expected to literally drown with the ship nor is he expected to dive 20 meters or something to check if people are stuck in flooded compartments. All the more reason why its so cowardly Schettino didnt stay, its not like he was supposed to lay down his life or something.
De Falco wasn’t supposed to handle the rescue but he did because he knew he was able to and there was no time to waste. it’s sad that the navy put him aside because he “showed off too much” intervening according to them. He was and still is honored by people but his peers reacted enviously.

Also, it wasn‘t their first call

@Lalogue - not only was he unprepared for this job, he had basically also worked on fucking this up actively in the first place. The ship would've never sunk without his extra actions.
"You've just admitted to abandoning your ship. Now I'm in charge."
That's called leadership. Hat's off to Capt De Falco.
Just do as you're told Captain Chaos.
william jafta ...That’s why Capt De Falco is a leader & in charge. There is a code of honour & a duty of responsibility to the people on that ship. Forget the philosophical bullshit & do the right thing. If every soldier, pilot & sailor had your mindset in WW2, we’d all be speaking German now.
@william jafta Because Schettino is SUPPOSED TO :
a.Know he will have to deal with this situation
b.Have the skills and training to manage that situation better than anyone on the boat.

Not enough. No justice for the victims at all. Imagine having your friends and family going on holiday only to find out they died because of the incompetence of the captain and the cruise organisation when they could easily have been avoided. He should be serving a life sentence. Simple.
@@MustafaKulle Personally I have studied the whole issue thoroughly, given to the hand. And, fortunately, I do NOT inform myself from the news for decades. Schettino is the least guilty of all...
I report the salient data:
1) Costa (like other companies) backed, with tacit agreement, the "bows"
2) It is mathematically proven that, if the helmsman had correctly carried out Schettino’s order, the impact would not have occurred, or at most there would have been a very slight contact that would have allowed even the continuation of the cruise.
3) Who should, DID NOT inform Schettino of the error of the helmsman, therefore the Captain, at least at the beginning, could not know what really happened believing that the impact was much less important than it really was.
4) Schettino got off the ship on the LAST boat
5) The De Falco phenomenon, in an abusive way, has tried to get publicity with his phone calls (his chance of life) not being territorially competent.

To understand why the captain of the rescue vessel is so outraged, one needs to understand three things:
(A) It is a sacred tradition through all martitime history that the captain leaves a sinking ship last.

I don't think there will ever be a time when this conversation will cease to disgust me. I remember that evening
ight very well, here in Italy we were all glued to the screens trying to get any bit of information and hoping for the best outcome for the people on board but it was apparent from the first moments that this was a true tragedy.
You said it perfectly. He must have been a person of low morals and perhaps on top of that drunk too. As for the responsibilty for our actions God mentions that for every person:
كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَآئِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ وَنَبْلُوكُم بِالشَّرِّ وَالْخَيْرِ فِتْنَةً وإِلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُونَ
(“Every soul shall taste death. We try you with good and evil [in this life], and in the end, you shall return to us.”)
I think they should have removed his life vest and tossed him into the sea.
Why do you think he looked without disgust at himself in the morning? Probably there were tonnes of disgust
I agree, if you want to see an even worse captain, search up the crew of the MTS Oceanos
He got sentenced to 16 years in prison.
I used to work at a retirement home. There was one old seaman, WW2 Navy veteran and captain afterwards. He heard a report about this story, and I swear I have never seen an old man over 90 get so angry. He said back in his days they would have shot a captain who is sitting in a rescue boat while women and children are still on board right on the spot. He was beyond furious. Days later he was still talking about how much of a disgrace Schettino is.
Woman and children? There were no men? And if yes, why is it just fine for men to die, but we should all be sad when it happens to women and children? Life is a life. Your value as a living being is not determined by your gender or your age or your race. At least not to moral people. Every death on that boat was a tragedy. It's not about who had a dick and who had tits!!
You missed the point.
I was telling a story. I wasn’t stating my opinion.

In court the captain stated that while he was doing his captainly aduties taking head counts and organizing the life boats the ship listed and he fell off right into a waiting lifeboat that had other officers and crew members. Isn't that amazing?? What are the friggin' odds?!?
Man, it sucked that that same lifeboat had its rudder jammed and the motor turned on and it piloted itself right into a hotel.
Yeah anyone that believes that story also believes a crackhead when he says that the trousers we just pulled meth out isn't his...
Yes, and I'm sure all the officers and crew members in that one lifeboat all conveniently fell in too!
none, it was a bloody lie.
And the fact the boat listed so quickly that only he was able to fall and not the others? Amazing!
The fact that anyone died in that incident just demonstrates how grossly incompetent this coward and his cruise line were. Unforgivable
32 souls were lost under his incompetent command
Can't blame the cruise line for the cowardly act of its captain. He is solely responsible for all.
Cruise line did nothing wrong, they did not know about the procedure the captain did, what caused the sinking. The cruise line even fired the captain and was against the captain in court.
The captain got a 16 year sentence from Italy. Here in North America it would have been way worse. He deserves it
lets put this in proper context the guy didnt just abandon his command and the ship,he personally alterd the navigation of the ships course to impress a woman,he was responsible for the ship hitting rocks, takeing on water, listing and the course of events that killed people and to be such a coward in the final part of the tradegy goes to show just how low he is,read the trail transcripts he even tried to blame his crew for not being able to follow orders! slimey bastard should have gotten life
The Commander handled this perfectly, he was able to gauge the seriousness of the situation when others were dragging their feet, he made clear concise instructions for savings lives, AND was able to deliver a verbal ass whooping to that lying coward in the process. Bravo sir! 👏🏼
You got to hand it to Captain de Falco, he's one hell of an officer. Straight talking and clear thinking, the type that if you're in the shit you'd be glad to see ride to the rescue.

While Schettino was incompetent and abandoned his duty as the captain of a ship he could at least have saved much of his reputation by listening to De Falco and go back onboard and do whatever he could. At least he would have shown to the court he did an effort to help people - however small. By abandoning his ship, ignoring De Falco's advice/orders and going home he sealed his fate and people obviously branded him the biggest coward and irresponsible jerk ever.

I think this is the worst part. A joke to whoever lost a relative or friend on that tragic day.
Exactly, he could have saved himself by going back on board and doing whatever he could, however small that would have been. He'd have proven something to himself as well had he done that. Now for all time he's going to be remembered as a coward. But he's chosen his fate.
The Captain holds the ultimate responsibility and should be the last man off the vessel. That applies especially in an emergency, to get all the passengers and crew off the vessel or die trying. If that's impossible the Captain goes down with his ship as honourable Captains in history have proven.

@@AnodyneHipsterInfluencer The Swedish government? Or the Estonian? Are you completely out of your mind? Why would they want to do that?
Sometimes people are so unhinged, that it is scary.

@Аьзоно One stayed, so not everyone.
Probably Ass Kissed his way into being a Captain(More than Likely).
@mistrants2745 yeah in practice it means "get everyone off the ship safely or die trying"
he didnt have to go down but he had to help out

Same. I was at uni and one of my friend's mom was on the Concordia. She didn't make it.
De Falco wasn’t supposed to handle the rescue but he did because he knew he was able to and there was no time to waste. it’s sad that the navy put him aside because he “showed off too much” intervening according to them. He was and still is honored by people but his peers reacted enviously.
He was moved to an administrative roll (office) the captains came up with some lame ass excuse why he was moved. He left shortly after to become involved in politics.
He wasn't supposed to be handling it, but noone else seemed to be so he stepped up and did it.
Typical. Corruption, at its finest.
@@KristiLEvans1 it's not corruption, in this type of emergency the Coast Guard from ROME gets to handle the emergency, the Italian Coast Guard HQ in Rome already was in contact with Schettino. But De Falco still chose to call Schettino giving orders in that situation (as stated before the HQ from Rome was already handling the conversation with Schettino).
It's not a game, there's rules to be respected, De Falco got what he deserved because he simply violated the rules, nothing more, it's not corruption.
