Wonderful Find!! USC Had To Win This Game In Order For The Chaos That Happened On New Year’s Day 1971!! First Notre Dame Defeated Texas In The Cotton Bowl. Then Stanford And Jim Plunkett Defeated Ohio State In The Rose Bowl!! That Left Nebraska’s Win In The Orange Bowl Over LSU That Gave The Cornhusker’s The 1971 AP National Championship. Texas Won The UPI, Which Was Given At The End Of The 1970 Regular Season. Ohio State Won The Now Defunct Football Writer’s Association National Championship!! What A Year 1970 Was For College Football!! Thanks Again For The Upload!!
Theismann's 526 passing yards in this game still stands as a school record, one of the few records not eclipsed by Brady Quinn. They didn't shift the playing field over, even though the end zone bleachers had been removed. Those two fumbles in the third quarter were the difference. I remember seeing the numeric clock being used instead of the mechanical clock.
Im old, I remember watching this game, back then Notre Dame was on TV every week, know all the QB's and was a Joe T fan all the way up to when he led the "REDSKINS" to the Super Bowl, thanks for posting, this was great to re-watch and take me back to better days of my youth, this is what makes You Tube great, not all the political shit from both sides
I remember in the 60's & early 70's ND highlights would be shown every Sun evening. They were the original, I guess, America's team. Lindsey Nelson did the commentary if I remember correctly..
Both teams have played spoiler over the years. ND derailed USC's hopes of a title in '68 when they played to a 21-21 tie. After that game, John McKay had an idea why ND got lucky: "They have an official named Patrick Murphy."
Woody’s caveman offensive acumen certainly wrecked them vs Stanford and scuttled the 1970 national title. I think Michigan just flat-out beat them in ‘69.
USC was only 6-4-1 (not ranked) record in 1970...and tied Nebraska!!! I can see why Ohio State was voted NATIONAL CHAMPIONS...after losing to #4 Stanford and Heisman winner Jim Plunkett in the Rose Bowl...Texas also got a piece of the 1970 natty after losing to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl !!!
I played football back then, and the state-of-the-art jerseys were all loose, very loose. They also used tear away jerseys in college which literally would tear off if you grabbed them. The port hole mesh was also popular, which is what Ohio State wore in the Rose Bowl. But the basic jersey was heavy, cotton blend that was heavy and heavier when it was hot out.
There were 2 consensus National Champions in 1970, Texas and Nebraska. The Coaches Poll (UPI) didn’t start awarding a National Championship after the Bowl Games until '74. Texas won the '70 Coaches Natty based on regular season. Nebraska won Sportswriters (AP) title after the Bowl Games.

Miss the player introductions.
USC stopped Notre Dame from undefeated seasons in both 1964 and 1970 in the final game

I will always say the Buckeyes of 68 through 70 was the best team all 3 years, but Woody was hard to deal with.
Woody’s caveman offensive acumen certainly wrecked them vs Stanford and scuttled the 1970 national title. I think Michigan just flat-out beat them in ‘69.
I went to this game ,I was 16 & ...............DRIPPING WET ! I stayed the whole game. GO ND.
In our neck of the woods in Massachusetts, we heard stories about how Catholic schools used to pray for the Irish win
This game was referenced in the episode of the Sopranos where an 11 year old Tony witnesses his father “deal with” a debtor

Cool... 38 to 28 final, I think. That's USC in 2024 after the 1st quarter. Cheers!
It looks like USC is wearing practice jerseys. No band over the shoulders or stripes on the sleeves. Similar to Ohio State’s mesh jerseys.

How in the world did you find this one???!!!
Ara always had his problems with USC and John McKay
Notre Dame did well against USC in Ara's 66 and 73 National Championship teams
@@nathaniellathy6559USC did pretty good in their 1967 and 1972 nattys...not to mention the 1974 classic 55-24😊 after spotting ND a 24-6 lead.
@@meeenmeeestagigggles3246 Actually, it was a 24-0 lead. Most incredible game I ever saw.
Jess, what an incredible find!!!! Do you have the 1971 Alabama vs. Auburn game?
Joe Theisman went on to lead the Washington Redskins to a Super Bowl win in SB 17 over the Miami Dolphins
Ironic that both QBs would end up in the CFL!
6:38--"At the bottom is Darryl Dewan, number 10"--Channing Tatum's future father-in-law.
Commentators;
Chris Schenkel & Bud Wilkinson.
2:50 These are the good ol days! I wish they all could be California girls!
Amen to that! 😊
In a bit of irony, USC coach John McKay was Catholic and ND's Ara Parseghian was Protestant.
Christian’s vs the Papists
USC is not a religious school.
1970 NATIONAL 🎉CHAMPIONS.....OHIO STATE BUCKEYES
