- Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Brewster's Millions Of Rants with The Guitarists Of Steely Dan. I've had a number of requests to feature more of Steely Dan's music, and aside from a well-received Chordplay episode from a few years ago, not to mention Soloing Secrets and Three-For-All lessons surrounding Larry Carlton, this is the first time we've taken a deep-dive look at the excellent guitarists that have worked with this band over the years - so lets dive in!
The players under the microscope in this lesson include legends such as Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Elliott Randall, Dean Parks, and the essential Larry Carlton. Once you dive into this lesson, you'll see we're targeting a tasty idea from each player, in addition to some priceless words of musical wisdom from Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, a slick bluesy bonus lick from Larry Carlton at the end, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a Steely Dan fan, a fan of the great guitarists that have worked with this group over the years, a player looking to add some jazzy ideas to their playing, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

It all started with Denny Diaz. His electric sitar solo on Do It Again is a jazz/blues masterpiece.
denny dias' solos on green earrings and gold teeth i and ii are both just absolutely killer
This is killer! These guys + Beck+Holdsworth are just the most killer fusion players ever. So many new chords and scales to learn from these guys. Just the best at playing over chord changes
Denny Dias and Jay Graydon’s contributions were also amazing. I can’t fathom getting that advanced 😢
Jay Graydon did the Peg solo. That thing is a marvel! Also, was it Skunk Baxter on Rikki don’t lose that number? That solo is a masterclass in double stops and so melodic. Those would be my requests for the next two!
Definitely come back and hit the players from Steely Dan in another lesson !! This was great !!! So soulful & tasty were all these guys !!! Great lesson !!!
For the first three albums SD was an actual band. Skunk and Denny were founding members. B&F joined Dias' band.
My favorite band! Actually I love Walter’s solos! Black Friday, Pretzel Logic, FM, Josie, Home At Last! All so tasty!🔥🎸🎶
I always equated playing for the Dan like playing for Zappa. All the musicians were the best of the best!
"Skunk" summed it up. Like Tommy Tedesco said, simply, "Learn all you can, and then forget it".
All fabulous top notch guitar players and musicians great stuff David 👏👍🤘🎸
All brilliant guitarists, great channel my friend. like 380.
Years ago I played at a benefit for an animal charity and we went on right before Larry Carlton. No band, he just showed up with tracks, including Kid Charlemagne and other Steely Dan tunes he played on, and told amazing stories about the sessions.
Larry Carlton's first solo album is an absolute gem with the great Jeff Porcaro on drums, what a groove.
I always appreciated the guitar work on Reeling in the Years! Great stuff!
Another great episode from you dude. Thank you for putting in the work.
Killer episode. Those licks are total ear candy, man. You got sweetness coming out of your hands. Tasty af👍🏼
For soloing Steely Dan are the tops ! There are so many amazing guitar solos throughout their music. I tend to prefer their earlier albums . One of my all-time favourite solos is Jeff Baxter's solo on 'The Boston Rag' !
'something like that' God I love that. Thanks for the another great video
Dean Parks lick sounded like Danny Gatton's version of _Harlem_ _Nocturne_
Great one again Dave! I can't keep up ha
Great stuff, Dave!!
Where can I get those Steely Dan Trading cards? Lol.😆
Elliot Randall 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Top chops 🍻
Very nice. That Dean Parks lick is SUPER tasty! I'm definitely stealing that one. Huge Steely Dan/Donald Fagen fan. Probably my favorite Steely Dan lead guitar work is everything in Third World Man. Then on the solo Fagen stuff, some of Jon Herington's lead work on Sunken Condos is great as well.
Must have a listen. Jon Herrington's first two solo albums have some brilliant playing on them. Great albums.
Love the show, but really wanted to know what Derringer did with SD.I was listening to him when I was playing att 11 yo, when he was with the Winters brothers.Ricks had some great blues albums over the year a semi smooth jazz interpretation of all his hits.Ricks solo from Back in the U.S.A. from the Edgar Winter/White Trash double live album is fantastic, also he has a instrumental called Rhapsody in Red that it just phenomenal
Rick i guess is on show biz kids, my rival, and chain lighting. He plays slide guitar on showbiz kids, and on my rival he’s credited along with hiram bullock for guitars, but neither of them do the solo on that song. I have no idea what rick does on chain lighting so i cant help ya there.
I can attest “Skunk” is a really nice guy
Great episode. Thank you.
Awesome 👍🏻👍🏻 thank you!!

AAbsolutely fantastic have a wonderful weekend ❤😊
Cool!
I’ve always loved Haitian Divorce, now I know why. Thanks David!
Liked and subscribed 👍🇺🇸
Don't count out Jeff "Skunk" Baxter busting Re-Run, for boot-legging a Doobie's show,
during a two episode cliffhanger on "What's Happening?"
Please do a Little Feat chords of
Wicked
You have the guitar on your left leg . Is that a classical or better position than the right leg?
hey what is that song parks is playin on @10:40…
What is the name of the Dean Parks track? Sorry if I missed it? I’d like to listen to the whole song. Please and thank you!
Lorilee is the name
Can u play bananaramma cruel summer
I’ll say this, Denny and Skunk were what I call “energy” players. Meaning played with a lot of fire and grit. Those that followed and there’s way to many to mention. Didn’t play with that energy. They were smoother and you could probably say were better. That’s up for debate. However, every guitar player for Steely Dan was a monster.
