I was always split about this. While Chandler playing games to throw Monica off was definitely stupid, there's just something slimy about Moncia being ready to drop him right there and then, and run back to her ex. All so she can say she's married.
I thought it was pretty selfish how monica would marry richard since chandler is "against" marriage. That doesn't mean you should go marry your ex-boyfriend when you find out your boyfriend is against it. She should have just went to talk to him, I didn't like Monica in this scene.
honey she was emotional and considering she is a human she can't always be perfect. Besides she wouldn't have actually married richard that is totally off character for her she would have gone and talked to him about all this instead.
doesn't mean she shouldn't besides it was Richards' idea for them to stop seeing each other Just as it was Rachels' idea to get back together with Ross and she did so on her terms, not Ross'. Ross likewise got back together with Rachel on her terms. Life is full of moments like this, where people have to make a choice between compromising with someone they already know or finding someone else entirely. Sometimes they choose that compromise, sometimes they choose to move on...sometimes that choice is made for them....sometimes they hold out for a different compromise...sometimes they accept one situation and then decide they want a different situation or even a different person entirely. Life is non-judgmental that way for one simple reason: everyone does it, everyone has regrets for what they have done, and everyone pays the price one way or another.
@𝐀𝐆 that's not really the question to ask in this situation. It makes her look like the the main reason that she's dating him is that she expects to marry him. This is why there has been such a push against the entire idea of marriage. It's also why many states have "common-law" marriage laws. In DC I think it's 5 or 6 years that couples can be together, living together, essentially monogamous, before they're legally considered to be married. And I remember several cases that were in the news where even when the man and woman had different homes and did NOT live together most of the time...they might not even have been monogamous, really...but the fact that they kept seeing each other, for years, while the man continue to give her both gifts and financial support? When he tried to end things with her entirely she said "no no no" and took him to civil court claiming that they were married under common-law, and the judge agreed that he'd established an expectation from her and couldn't just abandon her at will. They were never actually married, never talked about getting married, just kept seeing each other, and for the judge that was good enough. She won both "alimony" and child support from him....for a child that wasn't even his. Then on the other hand you've got women who *do* want to literally walk away from their boyfriends and husbands and have no contact, nothing at all to do with them and these men get zero support in court. It is rare if ever that a woman would find herself financially responsible for a man that she used to date, much less legally married to them through common-law. Happens to men all the time.
@𝐀𝐆 I think this is really the whole issue that stands between men and women. Women are concerned about what their boyfriend says to them and what kind of emotional support their boyfriend provides to them. They're not concerned with being emotionally-stable and respectable, they just want a man who supports and respects them. And guys are like, you know it's nice that my girlfriend is attractive mentally, physically and emotionally but none of that means anything if I can't have sex with her, when and I how I want to have sex with her. And that's not even considering the other women that men want to have sex with, besides their wives and girlfriends. The simple fact is that with most men most of the time "providing emotional support" is at or very near the bottom of their list of concerns and one of the few things that changes that is that they can get laid by being emotionally supportive.. The problem is that many of them care a lot more about not having to be emotionally supportive in order to get laid. Often to the point where they are sexually aroused by being negligent, even abusive. There are a lot of people in this world who get their jollies by abusing others. Some of them are happy to marry a partner who they know they can abuse and they know will stick with them despite the abuse, and for such partners the abuse is normalized by their relationship, excuses made for it, it even becomes "a good thing". People begin to expect rewards for allowing themselves to be abused. And very sadly, that spreads out into the larger society. Let's face it. In the show Chandler comes from a very broken home. His father turns out not just to be homosexual, but a flaming homosexual. He can't really be expected to see marriage in a good light. He certainly can expect that someone who is intent on "getting married" to the point of breaking up with him if he doesn't want to "get married", is not exactly a good partner for him. And so Monica who is intent on "getting married" because she is getting older and wondering where her life is going to go...she forgets that when Chandler brought up this very idea at the beginning of the show that she actually laughed in his face at the idea of marrying "Chandler". Like he was some kind of circus-clown, not a respectable person. Much less a man that she would want to marry. Time and familiarity changed that situation for her, but Chandler had already gone through all that back when Monica was cocky and self-assured. He didn't spend all that time and effort with Janice because he knew that he would find someone else and be happy with them. Richard on the other hand is the guy that Ross and Chandler wish they were, to a large extent, and he *is* confident in his ability to find a good mate...and a good match for life...but he has no desire to marry a woman who he literally does not want to marry. Are not such men exactly the kind of men that most women want? So how can Chandler be confident that Monica wants to actually marry him instead of just "settling for him" when she realizes that she has to give up on Richard? And look how quickly she goes back to Richard anyway when she can't immediately get what she wants with Chandler. Yet again another consequence of wanting one man and rejecting another man. You are concerned with how Monica feels when Chandler says no. Why is Chandler saying no? Have you even thought about that?
@𝐀𝐆 and this leads to the ultimate question, why are people having sex with people who either they don't want to marry or who they don't know will actually marry them? AND why are people marrying each other and then finding out that there's something about them that they don't like and then wanting to leave them? Holy fucking shit, people. Women? He's a guy. Of course there's going to be something about him that you don't like. That he's actually proud of! And guys, the same goes for women! Do you honestly expect complete married bliss with someone who is not your same gender? So she goes running back to Richard, that only proves to Chandler that his reservations about marrying her are correct. Everyone learns at some point that jumping from one partner to another only proves that their previous partner was right in not taking them seriously. Just as as the person who jumped will see what their previous partner was really made of in their response to their switching partners and likewise should question what they see in themselves and their new partner. But the larger problem here is that none of the three of them really care more about being a real partner for someone more than having sex with them.
Yeah...I think that's the right move when your current boyfriend is wasting your time and your ex realises that he wants to marry you, why not? It wouldn't be fair to stick to someone who doesn't want you, right?
