- Rachel and Phoebe discuss how they both feel happy for Chandler and Monica, but also a little jealous. Rachel finds out about Phoebe’s “backup plan” to get married to Joey if they have not found anyone by the time they are 40. Rachel asks Ross to be her backup, but we find out Ross is also Phoebe’s backup! To help Chandler with his proposal plan, Joey tells Monica that Chandler has no interest in ever getting married. Frustrated, Monica reveals that Richard is willing to marry her.

Ross proudly saying Phoebe as her back up in front of rachel is best. Shows his strong friendship with pheebs though he dated rachel
you can tell from other episodes too, such as give her a bike.

I think that it says more that Ross wants Rachel to know that not only does he not need her the way that she needs him, but he's already taken even in that hypothetical situation, of her deciding their future together in the case that she isn't married at 40. Thereby validating what she's doing but rejecting her choice of action in doing it to him. While of course, not denying that he would do it if it were not for Phoebe, which is Ross hiding behind Phoebe instead of confronting Rachel head-on.
Rachel should have offered Phoebe a mood-ring in exchange for the rights to Ross as a fallback and they'd all know how strongly Phoebe felt about having Ross as a fallback. In the end Phoebe throws Ross on Rachels' lap anyway.

I was always split about this. While Chandler playing games to throw Monica off was definitely stupid, there's just something slimy about Moncia being ready to drop him right there and then, and run back to her ex. All so she can say she's married.
I liked phoebees hair so much better in the earlier shows. It was longer, thicker, wavy and in more natural styles.
