- First time I drive the Variotram more than about 15m.
2107 was taken to our picnic area for display on the 8th of December. It did not carry passengers or run further than our picnic area.
The speed was kept low in case the pantograph caught in the overhead. At the time half the motors were not working due to a traction converter failure and the remaining motors tended to slip every time power was applied.
The fault has since been rectified and we have all 8 motors again.
At this stage 2107 is NOT in service.
I also suspect any driver who was professionally trained on these trams will be screaming at the screen over my technique :-)
See www.sydneytram...
for why 2107 was taken out into our picnic area for display.
Look good Matt! 😍
Must be strange driving that instead of the older trams that you're used to.
Certainly is different, but driving the Berlin car is quite different from a 'Sydney Standard' too.
Oh wow they were able to convert it for use on the old system?
Nothing has yet been changed on the tram. It's electronic systems are sufficiently flexible that it runs fine on the lower supply voltage at the museum. The wheels are not ideal (hence the loud bang crossing the points) but they do track correctly, just not quietly.
The reason why they call it a Variotram is because it can VARY to any voltage. Some work needs to be done but hey; it runs.
This is your first time driving this low floor tram or maybe the low floor locomotive.
You haven’t driven the variotram when it’s on service since 1997. But you ride on it and took photos of them
