The whole expertise literature - one of the big finders is that this idea that people are naturally gifted - actually most expertise often have a strong basis in the degree of deliberate practice. i.e. the more they practice the better they become. The things that make the most difference are those things that keep people naturally motivated to stay involved. It might be that people like what they do which obviously helps with motivation. There is also a link betweeen testosterone levels and performance. Testosterone immunises you against stress. What makes a difference between high performance traders and low performance traders? Often the higher performers are the ones who have been around the longest. Stress resilience is a really important predictor of trading performance.
