I think people are being needlessly sensitive in the comments as I think you both are clearly saying that the original Broadway cast including Idina and Kristin set the standard but both Cynthia and Ariana did a great job bringing it to the movie theater while staying true to the source material. I agree with you Phil that Cynthia really made the songs her own and I personally prefer her interpretation to Idina's in many instances and I prefer many of her acting choices as well but I still appreciate Idina for originating the role. Ariana did well too and i can understand the critiques that she's kind of doing a Kristin Chenoweth impression but I also agree with Erika that it's a fine line and I can see/hear some changes in the performance to differentiate it from Kristin. I think she did a good job of not straying too far from the source material which she also is clearly a fan of while also embodying the character. *I edited my comment because I accidentally left out Erika's name when I made the fine line comment
This 100000%. Haha thank you. I get it, people are passionate about this. And if we were flat out saying they were bad, then I would understand the response even more. But we’re literally giving both of them their flowers haha.
Saying that Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba can't be compared to Idina Menzel, then saying Ariana Grande did well as Glenda with no comparison to Kristen Chenowith sounds unfair to me. They were all amazing. Besides, film can never be compared to stage imo.
Both did great, but Ari really stood out as the best part of the movie to me. Im not like an Ari simp or anything either. She was just born to play this role.
Blatant sugarcoated racism. I could listen to Cynthia for hours instead of miss Straindina who only really sounds good as Elsa. I don’t know what good there is to compare 🤷♀️
Yep. Please don’t get me wrong, Ariana did an incredible job and is deeply talented. But Cynthia Erivo has a once in a lifetime gift which she has also worked hard on for many years. Idina originated the roll and is amazing but Cynthia is out of this world. The tones and colors of her voice from top to bottom are something I’ve never heard/seen before. The gorgeousness of her voice absolutely envelopes you no matter what she’s singing. And her acting abilities are CRAZY. You know everything she’s feeling and feel it along with her without her saying even a single word. I’m so glad that I found OP’s comment within the first 30 seconds of this reaction so that I can save my time. I came back because I couldn't resist pointing out that's not what they said. Phil literally said that Cynthia made the songs her own and complimented how she brought her own flair to Elphaba (he referred to her as Elphaba in that comment because they hadn't yet looked at the credits to get Cynthia's name). Erika stated that you can't compare both Idina and Kristin just after Phil made a comment about transferring the material from the original stage musical to a movie musical and not disappointing the fans who loved it and have been anxiously awaiting the movie. It seems like they're directly agreeing with you that you can't quite compare the movie to the stage because they're different mediums. To dive in more deeply, although Phil led the commentary at the end, Erika remained complimentary towards Cynthia throughout the video despite not being familiar with her previously. Also, Phil did question Ariana's performance for being a Kristin Chenoweth impression which is when Erika pointed out that it's a fine line which I agree with but it's ok that Phil led the compliments for Cynthia at the end and Erika led the compliments for Ariana at the end.
The songs are actually recorded live as they act it. They didn't do studio recordings. They all had microphones added inside they clothing... You should watch the behind the scenes, showing Cynthia doing stunt work and still singing amazed me.
Cynthia Erivo was nominated for an Oscar for Harriet and another for original song for same movie. She's also won a Tony, an Emmy and Grammy. Also...Can't wreck a home that isn't already wrecked, tbh. 🤷🏽♀️
About Ariana and Ethan, it's better than some affair while he's still pretending to be with his wife. Those wreck me and my response is always, if you don't want to be with someone, leave. He did. It's not great, but I have trouble judging it too harshly.
Haha. The edit doesn’t capture it well, but there was definitely a more tender reaction to it overall. I guess our editor just kept the bigger reactions 😂 Beautiful scene though for sure.

I enjoyed watching your reactions. For other commenters, Cynthia Enrivo is indeed a powerhouse. Yes, she has already won a Grammy, an Emmy, and a Tony award. But that doesn’t mean her name is truly known yet. I wasn’t as familiar with her before either. I think her performance in Wicked is her true breakout performance. This isn’t discrediting her performance in Broadway plays, just stating that Wicked is now causing more people to know who she is and want to see her past work. The casting was perfect and both ladies did exceptionally well. I knew Arianna could sing (duh) but I was very surprised by her range and how well her voice blended with Cynthia’s voice. Standing ovation indeed deserved.
That Oz dance scene made me cry in the movie. It just felt so real and I know how it feels. After I watched it, I found out Cynthia crying and Arianna saying it’s okay and wiping away her tears actually happened during rehearsal. It wasn’t in the script and the director and everyone was hoping that Cynthia could cry again during the actual filming which now makes me even more emotional when watching the film or thinking back to the scene
I think Indina and Kristen did a great job on broadway. I loved watching the play. However the movie made it so much better for me. You can tell Cynthia and Arianna put their all in it and I love their chemistry. Cynthia brought the emotion while Ariana brought the comedy.
