You need to realise that a shrinking market can make you money, you just need to change your time frame and focus on markets with strong liquidity that you can get in and out of in short time. In other words stop investing in positions and start trading from positions, you have to be a lot more active but you can make a lot of money on your account.

Don't invest in very small companies. The share price can almost collapse in a bear market
Not investing is fair enough, but missing the opportunity to trade in smaller more volatile markets is something you don't want to pass up, if scalping and day trading is for you.
