Wine cork in plug hole #1. Crank till the cork pops out. Compression stroke, then a wire rod or bamboo skewer in the plug hole will tell you when it reaches TDC.
So don’t matter if my distributor is not HEI ? But I’m confused because I have a guide that say the dots on cam sprocket and crank sprocket need to be facing 🙏
Of course. Go by timing marks and crank gear mark outside. Also putting a finger over sparkplug hole 1. So many ways depending on where you're at and what you're trying to do.
@@wranglernash5799 that'll do it. We did that on a freshly rebuilt 283 in a cj5. Sounded like shotgun blast but it was straight piped so nothing blew lol
You don't need to do the crank rotation all you had to do was rotate the rotor. So pull the distributor and reset at 180°. You added a lot off work to do the same thing. In all reality you only had to install the wires 180° or opposite each other another words start with 1 on the 6 tower. Given time you'll learn these things andbreadingnthe complete procedure for setting the timing correctly with the chain. You should always do that b4 rotating anything it's possible that you bent the valves.
What are you talking about lol. The fact that you said I possibly bent the valves already shows you have no idea. Amc258 is not an interference motor. What I did IS the right way to do it. Hence why the jeep runs so well after all the work.

Bro glad you posted this. Just rebuilt my 258 and could not for the life of me figure out wtf. Tdc on exhaust stroke!! Uggggh
Glad I could help! Thanks for your feedback
Thanks for video having this problem right now
In order for engine to start, you must be at OBTDC on the compression stroke?
When the zero is aligned with the timing marks, you are at TDC?
Great video
So it’s the same process on yj 4.2 1990 my friend?
Yes

@@fotomotoxxiii thank you for ur help bro god bless you, the reason why I’m making sure is because I need to pass smog check 🙏
Can we find top dead center without pulling the timing cover and all that off?

Rufus! I’ve had that happen to me before!
Oh yea what part? The top dead center being on exhaust?
@@fotomotoxxiii ive set up dristributor on the exhaust tdc, blew up a perfectly good muffler.... haha

Both valves need to be closed....easy

What? Gotta love non mechanics giving mechanic advise. I'm sure your good at something, stick to that.
maybe if you just turn the whole vehicle 180°, tap your heels together 4 times just to be safe and 💢 whallahhh 👐 all done. 👌 your welcome!
