Alphonso is flaming on that bass. Whoo. Came here because I am a big Cobham fan, but all the members of the band are incredibly outstanding. One of my favorite recordings!!!!
First time I saw Billy was The Birds of Fire tour. Mahavishnu orchestra. Then I had seen him with his Spectrum 40 band. With Gerry Brown, Gary Husband and Rick Fierabracci. I saw George a couple times with Frank Zappa. Also saw Alphonso with Carlos.
One of the greatest concert on youtube, and probably the best "Jazz/Rock Band" EVER!!!!! 1:48 DUDE, 8:17 ECSTASY, 18:03 THE KING, 31:56 OMG, 51:12 FUSION....so many unbelievable moments from this "1h19's JOURNEY" George is a genius of course, Billy one of the best drummer of all time, and the 25years old John Scofield at his best, AMAZING!!!
Darrylizer1 I used to play lefty and cross for my ride, but about 10 years ago I decided to learn to be ambidextrous... it was HARD, and I'm still not 100%, but DAMN is it worth it =3
ΛUTOMATIC JΛCK I'm trying myself and for simple beats I can do it. Get something more complicated than a four on the floor rock or funk beat and I'm toast, haha.
Darrylizer1 every drummer has some ambidextrous ability.. there's 4-way coordination to consider as well. Billy plays a technique called "open-handed".
@ 23:54 - Alphonso Johnson - one of the first musicians to introduce the Chapman Stick to the public. So cool to see this early...and then Tony Levin slaying in King Crimson years later!
I'm a guitar player, but a strange coincidence of events led to me recently getting string of gigs on drums. I still enjoy listening to my Billy Cobham records, plus those by several other artists he's recorded & toured with. My extended internet search brought me here. I was looking to learn some drumming skills in a hurry. Billy has said that he'd experienced astral projection onstage while on tour in Europe. he said he'd find himself above & in front of the stage, watching himself play. He said that he'd witness himself playing things that were normally too difficult & demanding for him to execute. That may or may not be what astral projection is, but I had a similar experience just one time and it kinda freaked me out. I was the new guy in an established band, and about 15 minutes into my first-ever set with them, I suddenly felt weak, dizzy, and about to pass out. I was loaded up on weed, just like every other minute of my musical life, but I was sober and trying hard to be as professional as I could be. Anyway, I didn't get any feeling that I actually exited my physical body, but I didn't seem to have any control over what I was doing. I had to prop myself against a wall to assure myself I wouldn't topple over, and I was struggling hard to try to remain conscious. I could not even grasp what song it was that we were playing, and I was totally lost. I totally had no idea what the hell was even going on. I recall that I looked at a spot on the fretboard, thinking, "That note might be okay, if I can play that one." That's how out-of-it I was. Well, in spite of me worrying that I was fucking about to die or something & there'd be a big fiasco of a scene with EMT's, I couldn't believe that, somehow, I was actually killing it on the guitar, like never before in my life. Shit was happening with my fingers that was way beyond my skill level. I had absolutely no control, my hands might as well have been some player's hands on a TV screen. What my hands were playing was noticeably getting a very-favorable response from the band and the audience. I don't know if this next part was better or worse or what, but the next thing I knew, the band members had sort of moved a little off to the side and here I was, in the middle of a guitar solo. I didn't even know it was supposed to be my solo. I was somehow vaguely aware that the crowd was paying attention, and rarest of all, I got a round of applause at the end of the solo. I couldn't have told anyone a single note or riff that I'd played, it seemingly all played itself while I merely observed with extreme bewilderment. Hell, I remember I couldn't even guess what the next chord was gonna be. The feeling was a lot like if I was looking down on a busy street from a balcony or something, with no control over the motions of my hands a mile below. Except, again, I felt as if I was seeing normally with my eyes from in my head, and not from up above the room or anything like that. But at the end of whatever song it was, I peeled off some unbelievable lick, and the crowd cheered again. They went nuts on me as soon as the song was over, and in a minute or so, everything going on in my head was back to normal. I don't expect anyone to believe this, but I swear, it actually happened. I'll probably never get to find out what it was. Well, it wasn't long after it happened that I got tired of telling people about it. I wrote it all down shortly afterward and sort of moved on with my life. But then a year ago, I happened to read what Billy Cobham said, and now I want to see if there's anything about this that I might learn. I'm in my 60's and I've had some freaky nerve issues here & there. I'm thinking it might be that I just had something go temporarily awry in my brain. I don't take any talk of the supernatural seriously. Anyone who has anything to suggest, for a website or a study will be much appreciated. Also, I already took more than my fair share of ridicule & flak for even telling my closest friends about this, so any trolls can save their smartass remarks for their mom's funeral. Thanks for reading this.
I can’t believe they were doin this shit back then. This sound, the way of playing. The way BILLY PLAYS… don’t even get me started. They were revolutionary at their instruments
everyone tells me there is still great music being produced out there, and it's not that i disagree, it's just when i stumble across "the greats," there's just no comparison. Thank you for sharing Mr. 8
I agree.. Fortunately there are still great great new bands that somewhat purposely slip through the cracks of mainstream music that are exactly what you mean. I might suggest a few artists you may or may not have listened to that are incredible musicians creating similar funk Jams both new and old style music... A few that come to mind are Phish, widespread panic, TAUK, lettuce, lotus, bonobo.. A mixture of genres that remind me of this. Cheers! Check out my channel for ever growing playlists of choice songs from various genres and bands 🙃
There was an aspect of this i had an inlking of listening to because i liked experimental and energetic musicians, but i never embraced it.But later in retrospect after retracing the steps of a lot of my old music & becoming jaded from my nostalgia, this is truly fresh for me.thnx!
@@The7vision That's right. They were so young yet so mature in their playing and outlook, going in new directions all the time. There was room for exploration then.
OMG ! this band was way up there with the greatest jazz fusion ensembles ever (Return to Forever, Mahavishnu, Weather Report) .... B.C. at his peak, after the extensive touring and recording with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and his early solo projects, Duke fresh from several albums and tours with Zappa (how much can you learn?) John still had hair and just burst into the fusion scene and blew everybody's mind ! Alphonso had just been with Weather Report for a short period before Jaco Pastorius joined them (W.R.) ..... but just listen to the music and everybody's playing ... TOO MUCH !
Holy Cow!!! I forgotten this some >30 years ago. What an amazing coincidence to see this now. They sure don't make music like this anymore. Amazing....
I was listen to this legends in The age of 10 years old and this still inspire me to play drums and mix music. The sound is so good and now still 43 years later its better than The most of livemixes today.

Saw Billy Cobham George Duke Band on probably same tour. Took a Young Lady really liked she was polite but didn't think she cared for much. Great Band Cobham Duke Scofield Johnson. Saw Billy in 77 With Jeff Beck Jan Hammer Alphonso Johnson really blew it out of the water
Absolutly amazing to discover those images now in 2021! I was listening the album "Live in Europe" back in the time with my friends, and I was 15... Thanx a lot for sharing this, it's a gift!
Wow, what a great concert. I have the album with all of these songs live, but never had the fortune to see this particular group live. Takes me back to the Spectrum in Montreal, at the 1987 Jazz Festival. What a performance. I've seen a lot of spectacular drummers in my life...but perhaps none as exceptional as Billy Cobham was that night. Thanks for this great post!!!
Crazy 8s Drums, thanks for the share 😀I bought this album on vinyl used for $2.99 in 1989 in Boston. This is a real treat for it has tunes that aren't on the album 😁. Billy is a league of his own, changed the drumming world. Love how confident he is and his soft touch
Billy is Simon Phillips idol and has the same drum setting as Billy had in 1976.

Janitor989 Yes, I can play simple stuff with either hand, but nothing as complex as what Billy can do.
Then practice.
This is the HIPPEST music I have ever listened to!
The exact year I discovered BC as a young drummer at 15, giant influence. Still can't get enough!
Billy is always amazing! George Duke is a treasure we have lost too soon.
Brutally good ! Pure Joy !!
Had the pleasure of seeing this lineup in 76 Also saw Tommy Bolin (the original Stratus guitarist )around that same time
I can't believe I've never seen this! Where have I been livin'...Reseda? This is the most electrifying performance I've ever seen!

ALPHONSO JOHNSON is so underrated......i wish the folks at Eagle Rock would release this on DVD
aj is bad as hell....i mean bad as hell...a great feel for the bass
I heard him with w.r. amazing player
Do you even know what "underrated" is?
Absolutely in fact when George Duke passed away they should have released this on DVD for his fans as a tribute to him.
One of the greatest: George Duke, incredible inspiration, his soloing is so thought driven and tasty, fantastic, especially during his solo part
"The Legend Of Al Mustafa" is one of my favorite songs ever written.
Merci George and RIP. Tu nous a tant donné..! Ce concert à Montreux, j'y était, trop trop bien.
Saw this concert at Royal oak theater Detroit 1976.
I think this is all around the best live recording of the fussion era, audiowise, qualitywise and ofc musically
If anything this should have been put on DVD as a cool tribute to George Duke when he passed away a few years ago...
Def one of my top 5 bands ever. RTF, Mahvishnu, Jean Luc Ponty, and these guys. Thanks for posting.
This was wonderful too. Back in 1976 and I like it today to. Thanks again

Around 1976 I became a fan of Cobham until tjis day, idem dito with Scofield later. This is what's real music about: creativity and interaction.
