I too live in MA.... impressive that you went to Hartford CT and light pollution wasn't an issue. I figured that you would have gone out to Western MA for this.
In darker areas, I'd probably do longer exposures, maybe 30-45 seconds. It helped that the bright lights of Hartford were to the East and I was pointing north.
