Honestly I respect how this game actually takes in one of the lesser known details of King Arthur's legend.
Mainly how King Arthur drew Caliburn from the stone, and later received Excalibur after Caliburn was broken.
Most forms of media nowadays just say Excalibur was the Sword in the Stone.

This game probably has one of the best iterations of sonic. He’s energetic and cocky as always but is still very mature especially during the ending. Much better than just spouting out puns like he does now

It's a shame that Akinori Nishiyama had such a short run as the head of Sonic Team during the late 2000s. Both this game and Unleashed were really unique and had lots of personality and production values.
Yeah ! I love all Sonic games from the Dark Age, but this game and Unleashed make me feel a certain inexplanable feeling that they were made with love and innocence in the same time... I can't explain... There's a thing with those 2 games which means there were so much of love in those games and they need more love and compassion. I can feel that, I don't know if it's because of the atmosphere, the story (and also the characterization, especially Sonic's when he's more unstable in Unleashed), the concept or musics, but I can feel there's more love and depth in Unleashed and Black Knight.

The opening cutscene of this game perfectly sets the theme. Edgy and serious end-of-the-world shit, and Sonic just comes in not caring about the gravity of the situation.

Interesting detail: the only time Sonic has a lead in to the fight(a little animation at the start of the battle) is at the final boss, and he's coming in from the right. It's usually the villain that enters from the right, and Sonic did say that doesn't mind playing the villain in this game. Pretty interesting when you think about it.

I want to take a moment to appreciate how Merlina was one of the few female villains, and the final boss at that.
If you look very closely right as the final boss fight starts, Merlina herself is actually just a texture while only her giant shadow is a 3d model

Alot of talk about how underrated this game is (which it is), but not nearly enough talk about how underrated Merlina is as a character.
Outside of Mephiles, genuinely the best written villain in the series. Her motivations, humanity, and the overall substance of her character is all perfectly portrayed, so effective that Sonic wouldn't call her the villain and saw himself as being just as wrong as she was.
I really miss when Sonic Team had unique (if at times polarizing, bizarre, or just outright ludicrous) ideas. Because nowadays we're stuck with Zavok as a recurring antagonist, and even for all the sins of this fandom, we don't deserve that...

Also if u were to slowly move away from her she would follow u at the same pace. That was a very interesting design choice they decided to go with in that boss battle. Shows her personality really well.

Yeah, this game in general has great usage of its music as leitmotif. In misty lake a more “hopeful” version of knight of the wind is used as the main melody almost as to signify that this are sonics very first steps toward becoming the knight of the wind.

We REALLY need a remake of this game, it's just so great in so many aspects!
I love the cast in this game! It’s the last Sonic game with this cast of voice actors. Jason Griffith as Sonic and Shadow, the voice actor for Aliza from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s as the voice for Blaze, the voice actress for Serenity, Joey Wheeler’s sister from the original Yu-Gi-Oh! show playing as Amy, and voice actor of the King of Games Yugi and the Pharaoh Atem himself, Dan Green as Knuckles! What more could you want! Crush 40 did an outstanding job with the music of this game, being their last Sonic game to compose the music for it. When I heard them play Knight of the Wind and the Sonic SatAM theme, Fastest Thing Alive (which they did an outstanding job with in comparison to the original person who sang it for the show which I’m glad to say is returning), at the 40 Anniversary of Sonic last year, the memories came back to me!!! I love this game! It introduced me to the Sonic franchise back in 2009 even though I was 13 back then!

I actually have to agree with you. When I played this on my Wii and fought the worst boss fight ever, I was really surprised he wasn't the bad guy.
I went into this game completely blind as well (and getting stuck on a level and needing to look up an LP) I thought I had beaten the game just like you, and bam, plot twist.

This is by far THE BEST SONIC GAME IN MY OPINION I remember running home in the third grade to play this game and I’d play for hours just completing the game over and over again. I’m a senior in highschool now and seeing this just gives me tears of nostalgia. I’m about to buy a Wii just so I can relive this wonderful experience because the story is unmatched. They need a new one to come out one day.

Seriously, Black Knight is my favorite game and I never regretted just any moment. Story, characterization, voice acting (especially Jason Griffith), OST, gameplay and visuals (included CGI) marked me.

God I wish the Dark Queen was in Smash Ultimate, she would be so cool to play as. They could shrink the big form like Ridley and she could control it to fight in the game it would be so unique.

HELL YES! I’m getting tired of hearing “sonic fans” laughing with sonic instead of being true fans and actually having concern for the series. If we were to revive sonic, we are going to have to get through to the fans that being slightly better than sonic 06 doesn’t simply mean it’s good. The dark ages back then weren’t really the dark ages, this was a time when sonic took risks but failed. We are in the dark ages now.
Callan Fox To me, I believe it’s the opposite. The story creators took a risk of “nothing lives forever” mentally and successfully made it work. Yes, the gameplay needs to be fine tuned and the voice acting is a little off but the story is fantastic and much better than sonic forces or sonic 06. Still not as good as sonic unleashed. To me, I think sega needs to look back at the dark ages in a more positive light. Maybe it didn’t do so well but sonic 06 was comedically bad which is a good thing because they gives it replay value and its actually a decent speedrunning game, sonic unleashed had a great story and the gameplay was overall decent, sonic and the secret rings took risks but it also had a great story, sonic and the black knight had an amazing story and it’s gameplay was good, and sonic colors was an overall a success!
