Freestyling with Scratch Patterns that Flow
I want to talk to you today about freestyling with scratch patterns that flow well together. I hear from a lot of DJ’s that they have problems doing this. They try to freestyle with one pattern and then try to go into the next pattern, but they hit a wall. This interrupts their flow and that’s a BIG reason why they struggle to flow when they freestyle.
A SIMPLE WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR FLOW
You can immediately solve this problem with the following method. I’m going to give you an example of two patterns that flow together, so you can better understand this concept.
For the first pattern I’ll use: Chirp, chirp, baby, baby.
Then for the following pattern I’ll use: Baby, baby, stab, stab.
What I want you to pay attention to is the common relationship between these two patterns. When you look at the first pattern, you’re ending with a baby scratch. When you look at the next pattern, you’re beginning with a baby scratch.
THE BABY IS THE BRIDGE FOR THESE TWO PATTERNS
As you can see, you’re using the exact same scratch technique (the baby scratch), to finish the first pattern and begin the next pattern. This is a pretty simple transition because you’re not going to change anything until you get further into the second pattern.
If you’re already comfortable doing multiple babies in a row, this shouldn’t be a problem for you. If you’re unfamiliar with doing Baby, baby, stab, stab, it doesn’t matter because you can just sub out that pattern for a pattern you’re more comfortable with. The point is you want a common link between your scratch patterns.
YOU WILL IMPROVE YOUR FLOW AT ANY SKILL LEVEL
Regardless of how good you are at freestyle scratching this will help you. It’s inevitable that you will get stuck going from one scratch pattern to the next pattern sooner, or later. However, smoothly flowing from one pattern to the next, could be as simple as using the same technique to end your first pattern and begin your second scratch pattern.
MORE FREESTYLE SCRATCH STRATEGIES FOR FLOW
Although using the same scratch to connect scratch patterns in your freestyles is effective, it’s just one of many ways to solve this problem. From a musical perspective, if you were to connect all of your scratch patterns this way, it would get pretty boring, pretty quick. If you want to learn how to keep your freestyles much more exciting, you need to do what it takes to freestyle scratch on a whole other level.
