    The reason the survivors are surprised to see infected at the start of the campaign, is because the infection only reached Savannah literal minutes before Dead Center takes place. Prior to their rush to the rooftop, they were probably down in the lobby waiting to get processed for evacuation, like hundreds of other refugees, in a regular safezone free of infected, when the infected suddenly caused the crowds to panic and the survivors to make a run for the rooftop. They probably first grouped up a floor or two before the rooftop, with Nick calling Coach, well... "Coach" due to his outfit, rather than actually knowing his name. I've seen some people headcanon that Coach decided to pick it up as his nickname because of Nick calling him that.
    In other words, the infection quite literally just hit the hotel, with the panic of the other refugees prompting the survivors to run to the rooftop before they could see the source of panic. The infected we see were likely still human moments prior, and the fire and destruction literally _just_ happend.
    This is a fairly common theme in the game, with Dark Carnival and The Parish having been very recently overrun as well. It's also why the helicopter is flying to the mall in the beginning - The mall was still safe at the start of the campaign, and is overrun shortly after the survivors leave the hotel, sometime throughout the 2nd map.
    There's actually some interesting theories to be had about how exactly the infected first showed up in the minutes before Dead Center:
    The simplest explanation is that the frontline of the infected had pushed through military defences, and naturally progressed to the hotel before anyone could warn CEDA.
    However, Ellis has a voiceline where he describes that he already had a previous encounter with the infected prior to Dead Center, so it's possible that he travelled down south to the hotel from an other area in Savannah that was being overrun, but still mostly controlled by the military. This would mean that he inadvertently infected people in the safe area of Savannah, which then caused the sudden outbreak in a way that caught CEDA by complete surprise.
    One small issue with this theory, though, is that CEDA should already have known about carriers, and had procedures in place to account for potential carriers, but given that Ellis is a Savannah local, and CEDA was under a lot of stress and pressure due to the infected hordes being barely held off, they might've made one small mistake and assumed him to be from a safe location within Savannah, skipping the usual carrier procedures, and letting the infection spread throughout the safezone.

    The hotel was used as an evacuation center, so there were a lot of people there already.
    We all know that the crew are carriers, so they probably were unintentionally infecting everyone while running up to get to the helicopters. As they grieve at missing the helicopter, all hell is breaking loose below. Then when they finally venture down again, after only a couple of minutes mind you, they see that everything quickly went wrong. That’s my take on it.
    Also I don’t think the cinematic is all that cannon, because we see the screaming oak exploding. So I think it was just showing what the game and tone would be as opposed to L4D’s opening.

    • @Angel-eu7pt
      @Angel-eu7pt 27 дней назад +20

      personally i think its just that they met outside the hotel, maybe through a secondary less populated door, took mostly the stairs , while most infected were probably the sick in the rooms and halls, i mean the survivors were probably busting ass up the stairs and the fire could have made the infected not hear them, then when the whirlybird left some of the infected came up the stairs and the fire blocked off whatever quiet route they took up the hotel.
      also i think gameplay and what the story is has always been at a disconnect, like how in the comics, the special infected spawn more than one or two at a time and they kill you the moment they get to you, so its not far fetched that making sense was not their focus when trying to tell the story about how the survivors met.

      Carriers only become infectious after being exposed to the infected, though. The only person who mentions prior exposure to an infected is Ellis, so if anything, Ellis would've infected the refugees and caused the outbreak at the Hotel, which then proceeded to spread across the entire state.

    I still really like how Dead Center and No Mercy, thought might as well be L4D as a whole, is that they have a certain thing in common that i focus on very often:
    The very first chapter where we meet our survivors is where they strategize to look for a rescue in a cliche zombie apocalypse checkpoint known to be overly populated in this type of crisis. Hospitals have lots of people in waiting rooms and patients for some sort of infection crisis to quickly spread, and malls are usually one of the most populated places you could have in a city, not exactly your first go-to for an apocalypse like this.

    @LoneWolf-kw3ol 8 дней назад +3

    L4D1 is 2 weeks after the first infection, and No Mercy starts a few days after widespread outbreak. Infected were known, carriers were being discovered, and the military/CEDA was mobilizing when the northeast was hit like wildfire (likely because the NE USA is a tourism hotspot). Several of the campaigns are back to back full of desperation and chaos, with some covering less than a mile of travel. Blood Harvest, military base (likely in South Carolina as there are several training bases in the state), a train ride to Passing (likely along the Mississippi or one of its southern tributaries in northern Louisiana). Its unclear but we can assume the gang arrives at the bridge between 3 and 5 weeks after first infection, LIKELY its close to 4.
    In the South, the military and CEDA are much more active and prepared, likely due to the much easier to manage population centers seperated by long stretches of interstates and lack of general tourism. Outbreaks are contained and isolated, carriers are being identified and removed from camps.
    A few days before the outbreak in the NE, our survivors find their way to Savannah to be evacuated. Ellis and Keith build an apocalypse rig but are forced to leave it behind. They make their way through CEDA's makeshift camps in the Mall, Hotel and in between, likely slippi g through the carrier tests with a mix of chaos, luck and unproven testing, and as carriers slip through they share food and water, sleep in over crowded rooms and mingle. Just as the evacuation is in full swing the outbreak occurs, perhaps at the same time or a few days after the NE outbreak. Panic, chaos, people rushing the hotel. Our survivors manage to make it through. Keith and Ellis are seperated at this point, perhaps Keith made it back to their truck and made it out of town, which is why Ellis doesnt have the keys or ever tries to find it through Dead Center.
    Because we are in the middle of a sudden outbreak, this explains the burning hotel, lack of special infected, and concentrated hordes in our path as well as the hasty makeshift barricades between the CEDA checkpoints.
    What set off the explosive and sudden turning of thousands all at once? Many diseases are known to lie dormant until theyve infected a larger population, then spring forward as if coordinated. This happens with the regular flu every year, so why not the Green Flu?
    Regardless, this explains dead center. To explain the timeline, L4D2 is much more spread out. Carnival is assumed to be 2-3 days after Center but i believe it to be nearly a week, given the chaos, danger and given The Passing (assuming its between 3 and 4 weeks after first infection), our total timeline hints at either a delayed outbreak in the South, or at least a much more tame outbreak compared to the northeast with a solid extra week for CEDA and the military to operate (and operate with the knowledge of the NE outbreaks) hence the stark contrast between the two games.
    The main reason for a large gap between Center and Carnival is to give the characters time to grow and bond, which the first game clearly lacked and the comics sought to rectify inbetween Harvest and Sacrifice.
    All speculation of course, but this all ties it up nicely if our gang was on the road for about a week, which allowed the virus to flood population centers and develop a sizeable number of specials and hordes if Center is happening as an outbreak tears through Savannah

      The Left 4 Dead 2 timeline is an idea I had for a video, it's so fun (and difficult) to break down.
      I'm currently working on the Swamp Fever video, which also has a ton of lore implications. Mainly Village En Marais, which was likely one of the last holdouts at least in the south. We can also confirm that the survivors left the plantation house 3 days before the survivors crashed into the swamp.
      The time in between Dark Carnival and Swamp Fever is also very hard to gauge. Assuming the turning process starts very shortly after coming into contact with a Carrier, they could have been flying for as long as 5-20 minutes. again its speculation but im willing to bet that Dark Carnival and Swamp Fever were less than a day apart, considering that they left the carnival at night and the sun rises at the end of swamp fever, its entirely possible that the events of Dark Carnival and Swamp Fever happen in the same 8-12 hour window.

    • @LoneWolf-kw3ol
      @LoneWolf-kw3ol 8 дней назад +1

      @@conz2769 i always personally believed the timeline and deep lore was intentionally messy and/or vague because Valve wanted to convey that these survivors have no desire let alone ability to keep track of time to the hour and study the infected in detail or read through notebooks and study charts at every camp they happen to come across, which also sells the chaotic desperation that much better.
      Wall grafitti also suggests the time of infection is seemingly random, as no one can agree on it. After being bitten, some said hours to over a day, others say minutes. As i said, many viruses work like a timebomb, waiting to show symptoms while they spread inside you and suppress the immune response. It could be that the average person takes a few hours once definitively exposed, changing based on concentration (4 carriers in an enclosed metal can potentially sharing food/drink with a single non carrier vs a handful among hundreds in the open air at a processing station).

    6:18 Fun fact: you actually can see Whitaker. When he fires the RPG at the truck, the window up there briefly opens, and you can actually see him if you use freecam. And you know that one zombie in the passing that has the medkit, throwable, ammo belts and the hat? That is actually Whitaker, meaning he eventually turned and became a fallen survivor.

    I think the reason why the survivors are surprised by the infected is due to the fact that they probably stayed in the stairway the entire time. Everyone else is either on the roof getting evacuated, or they're in the hotel itself already infected...
    But this doesn't explain why the staircase suddenly gets blocked, and the survivors for some reason lost the guns they had in the cinematic.
    Also did how the fire even started in the first place?? Do we have any certified fire investigators that can find out the cause? /j

    Boomer bile friendly fire is something that you can mod. Look for a mod called "Bile the world." This mod not only adds friendly fire for the BB, but it also have the Boomer's explosion affect any infected around it.
    And yes, there are specific voice lines that play if you accidentally hit a teammate.

  • @voxfoxclips8684

    The only thing I can theorize about Dead Center's lore compared to the trailer is that MAYBE it changed from them traveling with eachother into the hotel to it being them and multiple survivors stayed in the hotel with CEDA while the evacuation got set up. The hotel starts catching fire and gets overrun, maybe not in that order, while they're the last to make it to the roof as the chopper leaves in a panic. Could be why CEDA had a main office at the top floor. Begin campaign with little info on eachother and the zombies?

  • @theshades5702
    @theshades5702 5 дней назад

    Oh the confusion at the beginning is easy enough to clear up, the helicopters that are leaving are military helicopters, the military was running a controlled evacuation for survivors, Rochelle running the news report on it, Coach's bad knee and Nick and Ellis were also late comers, whatever the reason they were in time to make it to the hotel to make it through the protected areas, therefore not encountering zombies up until that point, but too late to make it up the stairwell in time, which is both shown in the opening cinematic, ('who puts an evac station up 30 flights of god damn stairs?' Implies they climbed directly up the stairwell not realising the hotel itself was already getting over run) and likely because of the military realising not only that the hotel was already infested, but possibly that these four were likely carriers, which in later campaigns we learn how they treat carriers.
    Note that they don't have weapons in the stairwell during the opening cinematic, wouldn't have needed them if they were protected by some sort of military cordon until that point, and we even see evidence of these with all the protective fences that have been put up all over Savannah forcing people into a specific route to their evac stations, since the hotel got over run, its probably safe to assume the military was akding with the fences and cordons and ended ul getting over run too

I hate it when people criticize L4D2 for the banters not similar to L4D, when L4D2 literally wall has the best introduction of the game with dead center laying out all the lore and narrative that they literally just met.

    Using vocalizers to shout out the names of each special infected before meeting and naming them is pretty entertaining, like the boomer one you used for Nick, most of them are hilarious, Rochelle just shouts "Tongue" for smokers. I also like when they first meet a witch and Coach calls her a bitch but Rochelle tells him to be nice and changes her name to witch.
    It's also interesting and funny how Nick can jokingly call Ellis using different names like Cleetus shortly after learning his name, clearly showing his initial disdain for the team.
