It's hella funny asf cause adult content is still on tumblr; it's just harder to stumble across due to the lack of hashtags. So they killed a cashcow due to moderating content yet it's still there. Truly an xD gamer move.
They are not tagged with hashtags at all, you have to dig deeper onto smaller communities, yeah
I still use Tumblr every some months but most of the people I have followed over the years didn't post anything in 7 years
And in 2019 I made a sideblog where I got 3000 followers in less than a year
It's still a good site for undergroud aesthetics and communities but I never dared to interact with anyone here (direct messaging and asks off)

The only reason Tumblr was even on it's last legs was because of the adult content. But when they got rid of it's last redeemable quality, it was dropped into the void IMMEDIATELY afterward. Some users could ignore the people that festered and rotted within their echo chambers, but when the adult content was wiped the site REALLY died.

As someone who literally worked for tumblr and saw this happen inside and out, it was all yahoo lol.
Doesn't surprise me they've always been slaves of advertisement. I'm sure they would have a *much* longer and healthier run had they made a donation system where users would support their favorite communities in exchange for exclusive content and Tumblr taking a cut of it.

It was basically just the adult content and hyper focus on moderation, everything else is just non reasons/ controversy. The Steven universe thing was so inside and specific most if not all people not in the fandom didn't know about it unless they were told about it in a video outside tublr. Basically the only people who mentioned it were right wing or were just trying to drive the sjw narrative which was predominant in 2016 and is now resurfacing again in 2022, (a new gamer gate) It's a non issue that wasn't the driver for it's fall.
I was going to say the exact same thing. Many social medias that exist and thrive today have those same controversies constantly spewing, it's definitely not what caused the decline, at least not the nail on the coffin.
I never even had a tumblr but I knew about that controversy. Everybody I know knew about it. The story of some chick that drew some art and got bullied and harassed into suicide attempt. Maybe in your social circle it was a niche topic, but everybody knew about it in mine.

The only reason I knew tumblr at a younger age was for porn, the moment they got rid of that I never visited the site. Something I learned recently after this video was that this artist didn't just make art of the characters being skinny. She also purposely made all the characters who were black or colored/clearly meant to be represented as a colored race white characters, who were blond with blue eyes. Something this guy ommitted to include as the reasoning people were upset.

actually I'd say it's about as active as it was before 2016. somehow people are still hanging out there to the point that, sometimes, even big memes get there start there to this day

I've been using Tumblr since 2011. I still remember the "What is air?" thing lol. I met a lot of cool people on that site and even got to meet some IRL. Even met someone who is now my wife. I've been holding on to Tumblr with a firm grasp but it's hard. The website sucks so much now and i'm close to just letting it go. What a great site Tumblr was.
