    So I kind of made a mistake in the video when talking about 4 ohm speakers, 8 ohm speakers and the watts to drive them (thanks to those folks for pointing it out). Part of this issue comes from my lack of sleep (thanks insomnia!), so sorry about that. The other issue is that watts and ohms are two different things. Basically, ohms measure how hard it is for electricity to flow through something, while watts measure how much energy is being used by something. I’ll explain a bit more below but keep in mind, I'm a home theater enthusiast, not an expert. Someone way more knowledgeable than me should feel free to chime in below and help me out if they want. I think I need it at this point haha. 😁
    The main issue with what I said in regards to wattage and ohms in the video is this: wattage is a measure of electrical power, while ohms measures the resistance between two points. Trying to say “4 ohm speakers need more watts to sound as loud as an 8 ohm speaker when trying to reach the same volume level,” is incorrect. Wattage and ohms have a complicated relationship.
    When we talk about speakers, we use ohms to describe how much electricity flows through them. Imagine a water hose with a narrow opening and a wide opening. If you turn on the water, the water will come out faster through the wide opening than through the narrow opening. This is because there is less resistance in the wide opening, and more resistance in the narrow opening. Ohms work the same way. A speaker with a lower ohm rating, like 4 ohms, has less resistance to electricity flowing through it. This means that more electricity can flow through the speaker, which can make it louder.
    On the other hand, a speaker with a higher ohm rating, like 8 ohms, has more resistance to electricity flowing through it. This means that less electricity can flow through the speaker, which can make it quieter. So, in simple terms, a 4 ohm speaker can be louder than an 8 ohm speaker because it lets more electricity flow through it.
    However, you’ll preferably need an amplifier rated for 4 ohm speakers if you like to push your system HARD and LOUD as 4 ohm speaker loads DO put more strain and stress on amplifiers than 8 ohm loads. All that electricity flowing through a 4 ohm speaker generates more heat as well, and some receivers have an issue dissipating all that heat quickly enough which can trigger the receiver to shut down and go into protection mode. If you listen at lower volumes this likely won’t be an issue, though, so keep that in mind. Hope this clears things up a bit.

      @winstonwolfe9681 Год назад

      This is incorrect. There is very much a direct relationship between Watts and Ohms due to Ohm's Law which is V=IR [Voltage = Amps x Resistance]. Speakers are voltage driven devices i.e. more voltage = more cone excursion = more SPL. As power in Watts = VI [Volts x Amps], as resistance (or impedance in an AC circuit) halves, amps (current) doubles to maintain the voltage across the speaker. This causes twice as much power to be used. This is why, other things being equal, 4 Ohm speakers are much harder to driver than 8 Ohms ones.

      @winstonwolfe9681 thanks. I definitely don't know as much about this stuff as I thought I did so I appreciate you posting this. Just remind me to never, ever mention any of this in a video again. LOL.

      Hi, I hope you are well. Great channel with great insights. I’ve been living with home cinema since the 90’s and I’m still picking up new things, elans’ channel is great too.
      I learned a long time ago that the best audio sound is achieved by having the shortest route possible from your media to your speakers. Dirac live etc, and dynamic range options are mostly adding noise to the mix. I used them for years but always felt a little inaccurate. Room and speaker choice and positions are the most important things to consider. All the processing tinkering is moving the sound away from its original intention. Im lucky enough to have most of my speakers in the best position so I just set my levels with a sound meter and input my roll off frequencies. Every sound enhancement feature is turned off. The biggest pain in the arse is bass. I’ve pulled my hair out trying to get it the best, I’ve tried everything. But I’ve finally managed to get it right ish.
      Dolby Atmos is great but boy it’s been a tough couple of years getting them right. But we love it eh?!
      Keep up the great videos mate.
      Sincerely
      Mark J Berwick

    No speakers are truly a 8ohms or 4ohms. Because with frequency changes, the impedance changes. So for example my Focal chora towers are listed as 8 ohms but according to the impedance curve of the speakers, it dips down to 2.8ohms between 100-200hz. So when I turn up the volume on my NAD t778 and measure movies with a RTA, I get a big dip in that area during dynamic scenes. I believe this is why so many people hear a difference with an external amplifier

    I have the same Denon X2300W. Its been an absolute workhorse. I'm still getting better sound quality from it each time I learn something new.
    I finally got my dedicated room going, so soon I will be upgrading to a Denon X6700H. Going for 6 ceiling channels as my room is long enough for it.
    Now that you have the 6300H, you gotta try out Auro3D.

      I loved my X2300W. Had it since before I even started the channel (purchased it 2016 I want to say). Wouldn’t change my time with it at all, it was just time for an upgrade.
      I’d really like to check out Auro3D, but at $199 it’s a really tough sell for a format that hasn’t really taken off and likely won’t. So basically it would just be used for upmixing, and I just don’t think it’d be worth it just for that in my opinion.

    There's a common misconception that Dirac is an Auto-EQ software. That's really just a small part of what it does. The main function of Dirac is it's ability to alter impulse response, which makes a WAY bigger audible difference than EQ'ing your speakers, especially in a non-rectangular room (like a living room). The reason I know this is because sometimes (maybe 20% of the time), Dirac gets it wrong, waaay wrong and alters you impulse response to where it makes your system sound like utter crap, like your wearing headphone or have the receiver set to all channel stereo. In that case it messed up on calculating the impulse response and/or measurements and you need to completely start over and run it again. BUT, once it gets it right, OMG it makes your system sound AMAZING! In fact I usually don't even let Dirac edit the EQ curve, I like my speakers to sound as designed. I edit the curtains to where it only changes the impulse response only because that's what make the biggest difference. Dirac really is a gamechanger, but still a bit buggy TBH. Still absolutely worth it though. I won't ever get another receiver without it.

    My overhead channels were an evolution, as well. Had two "front presence" speakers in my old Yamaha system. Added two in-ceiling speakers just rear of listening position that I thought I would use as my L/R rears, but ended up adding two rear in-wall speakers to take over those duties. I ended up adding two more in-ceiling just ahead of listening position, leaving me with six overhead speakers that I'm using as "front height," "top front," and "top rear." Luckily, I have a Denon X8500H so I have plenty of speaker setup and sound decoding options to choose from. Fun, but expensive hobby to have! Does sound great with movies that have spent some time with tweaking the Atmos soundtrack.

    I have two Atmos setups, TX-RZ50 7.1.2 using Dolby upward firing speakers (Dirac) and an AVR-X6700H 7.1.4 using bookshelf speakers mounted to the ceiling (Audyssey). The upward-firing setup sounds more convincing (louder?) than the ceiling-mounted speakers, not sure if that's a Dirac vs Audyssey thing or a balance thing. The ceiling-mounted speakers seem to blend in more; I can tell that audio sounds fuller, but the height audio sounds more subtle so I might consider bumping the volume on the ceiling speakers to help them stand out. Resident Evil 4 is a current game that has Atmos on PC (I assume that means Xbox as well), definitely not PS5), the chains sound effect in the title screen audio sounded much more pronounced on my upward-firing speakers than my ceiling speakers.

I just got a 4070ti-based setup and NOTHING I’ve been able to do will get anything other than stereo for games. I’ll go out a limb and say that Windows 11 itself may be the culprit. I recently helped a friend measure his system remotely, and he was using Windows 11. We had a heck of time getting Dolby Atmos to work with the measurement files, to the point where we had to do some workarounds to get it to work at all. I read a few things online that echoed my experience.
      For the record, I have no Windows 11 installations on any of my machines, so I may not be of much help unfortunately. It looks like there are few things you can try by googling it, but none of the methods like “use audio troubleshooter” worked for us.

If your not willing to put the time into it, then Dirac should suffice. If you want it calibrated to perfection, I'm afraid this may be the only true way of doing it. OCA's upcoming videos will be showing newer and improved ways of manual calibration. Seeing as how the REW software is continuously improving, so will OCA's methods. Trust me, if you have the time and patience for the manual calibration, you wont care about automated calibration software ever again!

    Idk if you’re aware about the xt-32 issue. I was just recently informed on this after having my denon for almost a year now. I’ll put it in the exact words that were given to me
    “D&M receivers have an error where they use 1ft=1ms of delay instead of the actual speed of sound (roughly 1.132ms). If you're using MultEQ-X on the computer (the $200 product that lets you really dig into things), it does the correction for this automatically. If you AREN'T using it, take all of the measurements in your AVR and multiply them by 0.889
    (if Metric, 0.875), then substitute those numbers in instead. This will get you better alignment between all of the speakers.”
    Hope that helps you or anyone else that reads this that is unaware of it.

      In regards to gaming, I kind of glossed over some info quickly in the video. I actually have both the PS5 and XBOX Series X hooked up directly to my LG C1 OLED. The reason I don't need HDMI 2.1 on the receiver is because I use an HDMI eARC extractor to basically trick the OLED into thinking I have an HDMI 2.1 receiver; this means I get full resolution multi-channel audio support as if I had an HDMI 2.1 receiver (outside of DTS, which the LG doesn't support DTS unfortunately).

    • @HomeTheaterGamer
      @HomeTheaterGamer  Год назад

      I find that with DTS Neural X it has a tendency to actually create more of an “object based” effect, where certain sounds seem like they’re are placed discretely above you or towards your rear right for example. With the Dolby Surround Upmixer, I’ve always felt it added more of an ambience effect with less in the way of discrete sound objects placed in the height channels. I tend to prefer DTS Neural X for that reason, but there are times where I switch to to the Dolby upmixer because Neural X can be a bit too aggressive at times (the intro music to Modern Family is a perfect example of this).

    Brad, I don't think your explanation of speaker impedance/power/volume is correct.
    Lower impedance speakers are harder for an amplifier to control power flow as there's less resistance and most AVR are designed around an 8 ohm load. It does not translate to more power required to reach the same volume as an 8 ohm, that's a matter of sensitivity.
    That's my understanding and please correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @HomeTheaterGamer
      @HomeTheaterGamer  Год назад

      Thanks for the comment. I honestly just went for a blanket approach in the video because most folks understand watts, with 4 ohm speakers being much more power hungry and harder to drive than 6 or 8 ohm speakers. In reality though, it's a lot more complicated as speaker ohms fluctuate quite a bit when actually in use.
      With that said, I'll be the first to admit that I'm definitely no expert when it comes to stuff like ohm ratings, so if I did state something incorrectly or if my overall statement is so far off then I want to know about it.

    • @djlee688
      @djlee688 Год назад +1

      @@HomeTheaterGamer All good Brad, just wanted to highlight the topic before the internet trolls start bombarding you.
      Yes, impedance is always fluctuating depending on frequency, manufacturers just state the average.
      I find the term "hard to drive" very confusing, it's actually easier to drive as there's lower resistance but harder to control, and most AVRs can lose control and do some damage. A lot of AVRs have an ohm switch on the back, all it does is limit power to prevent damage.

    • @HomeTheaterGamer
      @HomeTheaterGamer  Год назад +1

      If I’m being honest, there’s a ton of home theater terms and verbiage that is downright confusing. I’ve been in this hobby over 20 years and a lot of things can and still do make me scratch my head and go “wait a minute… what!?” So then we get end up getting more common, blanket phrases like “harder to drive,” because going into more detail might induce that head-scratching haha.
      I’m definitely guilty of using those phrases from time to time (as I did in my first reply). It’s something I’m working on. Seriously, thanks for replying and I sincerely enjoy having these conversations.

      Here’s a little snippet from the AVS Forum Amplifier FAQ on Speaker Impedance
      ----------
      Do I need to match an amplifier's impedance (such as 8 ohms or 4 ohms) to my speakers?
      A solid state amplifier does not have an impedance as such (tube amps are a bit different in this respect.)
      Almost any audio amplifier will work with 8 ohm speakers (with some exceptions such as fixed voltage amps.) As you lower the impedance of speakers you connect to a amp, you place more demand on it. Lower impedance means more current will flow through it's output devices (usually transistors). More current means more heat.
      4 ohm loads present a more difficult load for amplifiers. The lower impedance means electricity will flow more easily. That means the current flow will be higher. Higher current means more heat will develop in the amplifier, especially in the output devices. Amps typically have themal protection circuits. If you your amp is shutting down due to thermal overload, you are driving it too hard, not giving it enough ventilation, or the amp is not working properly.
      Amplifiers sold for pro audio applications, and for home audio would usually be able to handle 4 ohm loads with no issues. Receivers may shut down under heavy load. Or perhaps their longevity could be reduced, because they were not really designed for 4 ohm loads. Lower impedance is not suggested, such as connecting two 4 ohm speakers in parallel.
