  • This video reviews how to switch on a 2015+ R1200GS or R1200GS Adventure equipped with Keyless Ride when either
    a) The key fob's battery has died.
    b) The key fob is lost and you only have the emergency valet key.

    Very helpful. My dealer told me that only the valet/spare plastic key can unlock the bike with the sensor under the rear fender. You have shown conclusively that he's wrong and that's very helpful if the fob battery fails when I'm away from home (and away therefore from the plastic spare key). Thank you.

    Thanks for sharing this - helped me out instantly! For me the problem was a bad battery in the keyfob, this helped confirm the motorcycle is OK.

    Thank You for that informative video...My new key fob starting flashing the red indicator in the upper right corner...I didn't know what that meant til now!

    Thank you on the explanation . I was hesitant on ordering the BMW with the keyless ride because of not being able to start. My friend who has the keyless ride in the Multistrada had an issue when riding when he lost the key. He didn't realize until stopping at a gas station and shutting the bike off that his fob fell out of his pocket , couldn't remember the code to start and had to leave the bike. Something I would hate to have happen on a long journey .

      +RETICS1 After 8 months with it I think it's a very good feature and overall think there's less opportunity to screw up the keying mechanism. I keep my fob in the breast pocket of my riding jacket, and that pocket is always accessible regardless of other liners being installed into the jacket. The only time it comes out is if I am going to operate one of the physical locks.
      You have to be a little more careful because the bike is perfectly happy to start while you leave the key in the seat lock, you panniers if you have the OEM ones, or the nav cradle. But if you have the key on you, you never have to worry about leaving the key in the ignition when you stop!
      All BMWs have come with a ring antenna in the ignition cylinder, and that ring antennae is prone to failure if you add any other items to your motorcycle key chain which bounce around with the key in the ignition. As such I think you could make a reasonable case that the keyless ride is a simpler system than the mechanical key + ring antennae system for conventional ignition.

      +AdvenCharm Have you had any problems with the gas cap malfunctioning or freezing stuck at all not having a key now?

      +RETICS1 No, but to some extent I'm not expecting magic out of the system, and I am willing to make some concessions to working with it in my own behavior.
      It's an antennae mounted in the seat and has a deliberately limited range to keep people from stealing your bike. Sometimes I'll try to open the gas cap to fuel up, usually I'll need to pull the lever at least twice (first time makes the bike look for the key, second releases the gas cap latch). Sometimes after two pulls I'll have to move the key closer to the antenna to get it picked up necessitating more pulls.
      But I've never had a REAL problem getting the gas cap open. I always remember it's a machine, that it's built to work in a certain way, and that it's always working according to a set of rules, though I might sometimes forget exactly what those rules are.

    Thanks for the info - “Q” if I have a flat battery, how could I start the bike after I used the plastic key if the battery was flat? Where is the power coming from to feed the spark plug ?

    Thanks for the info, I had no idea that antenna was there. You mention the valet key. Are you saying you can place the valet key under the fender like you do with the fob? Mine is completely plastic and would be surprised if there's any chip in it. Thanks!

      That's exactly right, even though it's plastic there is a an RFID unit molded into the key. It's only enough to unlock the bike when you hold the valet key under the rear fender; you can't have it on your person like with the "proper" key.

      The plastic valet key does have a chip in it and does work the same as the fob key with a dead battery. I just tried it on my '17 GSA and it worked like a charm.

    AdvenCharm maybe do you how to help me. I havea key fob, but it is from other motorcycle, but it is working only then when you put it to anthena. how connect the key what it would work like a radio key? this key is seen only then you touch the anthena with that key.

      +Alejandro “iRA” Pérez Pastor It's a tank bag ring. It bolts in place over the gas cap, and then a spring loaded clip panel on the bottom of my tank bag clips to the tank ring.

    I've a Motorcycle(1200gs) and its battery was staying outside for almost 8months and now i fixed and put it back,but i've the same problem..do you know why?..can u help?..

      +barış şahin I don't know if I can help with that. Do you have a multimeter, and can you check the voltage on the battery for both the motorcycle and your fob? If you use the technique I demonstrate in the video, the bike should start if the bike battery has charge. You might need to recharge the bike's battery if it has been sitting for a long time.

    does this key also unlock the steering column?

      Yes. Steering column lock is the same mechanism as switching the bike on and off. The differences are long press vs. short press, and the locking pin has to be aligned with the handlebars at either extreme. You can lock the handlebars with a dead key fob battery provided you have the arm span and the handlebars correctly aligned.

      Ed, I'm not aware of any circumstances where you can get the bike switched on but the ignition is specifically disabled. If you want more confidence that your bike will start under various circumstances, I encourage you to run the exercises I demonstrated and go through the additional step of getting the engine to turn over after each.
      Of course, just because the bike switches on doesn't mean the engine will start (low amperage battery, fouled spark plugs, failed electrical connectors could all be consistent with that). I'm just not aware of any lockouts where the keyless ride system would allow the bike to be switched on, yet the ignition wouldn't work specifically because of keyless.

      It's a bags connection tank bag mounting bracket. It replaces 4 of the 6 screws holding down the gas cap faschia with longer ones and bolts down on top, and then the tank bag clamps onto the bracket.

    what about the bike's battery? Guess you cant push start it

      If the bike's battery is so dead that it can't receive the RF signal and can't switch on the ignition, yes, you cannot push start it.
      If the bike's battery is too low to turn the engine, but can switch on the ignition, you can push start the bike. Of course, getting 500+ pounds of GS pig moving fast enough for a push start is yet another question...

      @@advencharm5694 I don't think so. We had a GS with a bad starter motor and could not push start it. We asked BMW and they said this was correct you cannot push start a GS ????

      As bike has fuel injection, fuel lines must be pressurised, and that will happen when ignition is turned on (fuel pump will buzz a bit while pressurising the system). If battery voltage is very low this might not be possible.
      However, if there is enough pressure in fuel lines, K75s, K100s, K1100s, R1150s and R1200s (oil heads) were able to be push started. I've done it on few occasions with K100 and R1200gs (2008). Trick was to get someone to push it, then kick it into 2nd gear , press starter button and release clutch. Starter button was necessary as Bosch ECU won't fire spark or open injectors until it gets that signal. All conditions must be met for engine firing to happen.
      I doubt that same trick will work on latest R1200/1250 WC models but it is worth trying.
