I know what you mean. I thought he'd have a lot more time. He's great like Bob Dylan is great, but it took me many years to come to realize that. When this song was current, i just thought it was funny, particularly the ".. someone somewhere somehow musta kicked you around some ... " bit. This kinda rock and roll was a commercial product back then, I thought we'd always have it. Things have changed.
Oct 3rd..my birthday...muted last year...I play Hammond...love the organ licks...I'm 70...old school my style...work them drawbars Benmont..I do...leaving my home in Oregon to join a band in Daytona .. they play a lot of Petty..just my style...remember seeing him at the Rock Corp..in Van Nuys in the 70's......I played there often as well...smooth real smooth...learned a lot from that Cat..was a sad day last October 2nd...indeed.

You exaggerated a bit with those 300 times, but it's right that it took many sessions to finally get this perfect sound. And that's what said Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell:
"That was a hard record to make. It was a 4-track that I made at my house. Tom wrote over the music as it was, no changes, but it took us forever to actually cut the track. We just had a hard time getting the feel right. We must have recorded that 100 times. I remember being so frustrated with it one day that - I think this is the only time I ever did this - I just left the studio and went out of town for two days. I just couldn't take the pressure anymore, but then I came back and when we regrouped we were actually able to get it down on tape."
That's amazing. This is my favorite song of his. I'm mourning his passing with a 48 hour Tom Petty binge.

This song has taken on a new meaning for me. Tom wrote it about being handed over from ABC to MCA without his consent or recognition of his contract that forbid it, and Americans have been sold out to global financial elites without our consent, or even a conversation. "Refugee" should be the anthem of the real resistance, those few remaining Americans who haven't been divided or polarized by corporate media propaganda and want to stand together for something better.
