  • UP has brought the Big Boy 4014 to display on Home Plate for this years College World Series in Omaha, NE. I take a tour and a close-up view of the heart of the beast, Ironman's oil burning ARC Reactor as they fire it up for the day to bring it up to pressure.

Even though the floor is dirty due to use, I also thought it was very grease\soot free, probably not so much if it was burning coal.

It's simply amazing how much is going on with that loco. Looking forward to running it on my layout in the next couple months.

Thanks a 1000 times for that. Now som Q's for you. How much hotter was it in the cab? How many knobs are there to operate? Did I see speakers mounted inside the cab's roof? What is the normal sound level in the cab while running the boy? I assume you don't know all the answers.
Again thanks for some grest closr-ups as well. I will compare them to my 4011 and 4020 respectively. I am considering adding 4014, 4015 and the caboose to my collection.

I will try and answer some of these. The temp up against the tender is cooler since there was a slight breeze, move one step inside the cab and the temp goes up about 20 deg. When I was in the cab, they had the fire burning for an hour and the steam pressure was only at 200 PSI and slowly climbing to 300 PSI. They do this to keep the pressure up while sitting on display, makes it faster to get moving later on. The number of knobs actually are less than I thought or have seen on other locomotives; I didn't count them all. I did count 32 red valves or levers to operate, could be more. There is a single speaker mounted behind the engineer's head above the window connected to the radio. I have not yet been in the cab during actual movement, but lets just say that hearing protection is usually worn. What I did hear one time from Ed about the temperatures inside the cab when running; the metal throttle handle is usually 140 deg F and the boiler surface is around 700 deg F. Future firebox maintenance
ebuild will upgrade the insulation inside to reduce the temp in the cab by half. Great questions.

I worked in the aft engine room of the USS Jason AR8 in the 60s.
None of our steam valves and lines were that small. It was a 400 lb system with 2 boilers and two turbines in each of the two engine rooms. It had 3 steam-powered generators in each space.
If you think it gets hot in that cab, wait till you've been in one of those old ships. If you forgot to take a salt tablet every half hour or so and drink coffee constantly, you could pass out very quickly.
With both boilers lit off and the ship underway, it was 135° in a cool spot.
No non-engineering personnel would step foot in there.
I could light off everything in there by myself except the boilers. All the generators and high pressure steam pumps.
The boiler tenders, BTs, looked after the boilers. Easy job.
