On a 6266 Gen 2 with 30 psi of boost on full e85 and 10.5 degrees of timing my car only made 608 whp with 500 lb-ft of torque. 60-130 is 6.81 though which is good for a measly 600 whp full weight car I think? Your car inspired me to buy and build my 135i into what it is. I had a 535i when I first found your channel and now I have a Space Grey Single Turbo 135i with a 6 MT. A sleeper for sure. I watch in Germany, the best channel for BMW engine building is @kjmobilmotoren I have a feeling you're definitely gonna LS swap this if you plan to run the same amount of power again...
Hey man, cheers for the very interesting content. Wow so where maxing out right at 750-800, still impressive. Just a quick note, for your interest, there’s a channel over here (Aussie guys) “zero to 60” it’s mainly n54 stuff, their like us, switched on but not professional. Anyways they built a budget build using maxspeedingrods rods/ new bearings/ cheap pistons ect. I don’t think it’s beyond you to build an engine the same in the future. There engine is running fine, they haven’t pushed it yet though due to other issues, but they will… I think your engine could be a contender for the same. Good to see the 1er getting some love, goodluck and cheers ✌️😎
I'm not sure if you have looked into it, but if the oil you're running isn't rated for ethanol fuels it will break the oil down and may have caused some of the bearing wear that you're seeing. Also, it may be worth changing the oil a bit more as well as ethanol will definitely dilute the oil a bit as well.
I've mentioned this in other videos, I wonder how significantly cooler oil temps affect the longevity of an engine. I have a 2011 N55 E82 at 90C operating temp instead of the stock 120C. All I did for cooling was Mosselmann thermostat, set fan speed to sport, EVO1 intervooler, & opened the engine bay with M3 rain cowls. I drive it at Stage 1+, only bolt on I don't have is downpipes. Regularly hit 270km on the autobahn, reliability was my goal. Couldn't aford a new engine if I ruined it.
to be honest it can be save or if you still have your old engine you can make from 2 to 1 and maybe save money that way normally that kind of damage is detonation on timing might’ve been the timing reach the limit of the mixture and created detonation and bended rods and mark your bearings also open deck is dangerous with to much boost tends to warp and can cause oil and coolant mixture
I don't have my first engine anymore, but you're right, it definitely could be saved. I am going to stash it away for now, and get another used engine to drop in for now. As I have the time and money, I'll build this one back up 😎
you had residual oil when you flipped the engine over, you could hear it burbling when you turned the crank, that's why there was oil on top of the pistons. That thing is new rods and bearings away from being your 9 second car.
Yeah, we had turned it over and back a few times, getting oil all over the place (off camera), lol. But I definitely am itching for that 9 second pass... hopefully next spring!
Damn can't believe you bent the rods. Now I'm going to be scared to do the same. I've been resisting the temptation to turn it up past 26 psi. Hopefully it stays together
I'm very happy with my N55 E82 at 350hp so it's a bit crazy for me to see you guys wanting more than double from your 1ers. I am i Germany however so I can take it to the Nürburgring or 280kmh on the autobahn any time I like to get my speed fix. Some of the mods you have to do in the US would make my ride illegal in Germany anyway. I would have gotten an LS C5/C6 if I had stayed in the US.
@@DigitalDissident honestly I think you just get used to the power, and after a while it gets boring and you're searching for that rush you once knew. @@BaldBozo I started with reducing weight especially under the hood, & making things more reliable or easier to service where I could while keeping it a daily. Lot's of unnecessary metal brackets in the engine bay, deleted.
not sure if it applies to n54 but i remember hearing someone say on a n55 track car they will have oiling issues under lots of g force left and right. they recommended going to s55 oil pump and pan for n55. curious if it applies for crazy launches as well. also that could just be fuel in your oil
My buddy Derek in the video was thinking the same thing. He was wondering if that was the case with some of my crazy 60ft launches, as this noise started happening right after that track day.
Great video! The bent rods were interesting. I was going to do a fully closed built block, but $13k is a little out there. That includes the labor. My tuner says he can make it last for a few years around 700hp or so. Save up then go for it.
I'd bet if we could pull some timing out of the peak torque and left everything else alone, it would live at 700whp+ for even longer than this one did. At least that's what's been working for me in my car.
Recently bought an 07 335i with 17t aftermarket turbos currently making 500ish on 22psi . Engine has about 80k on it. What would you recommend doing to prevent engine failure aside from basic preventive maintenance. (Car has a massive list of supporting mods & has had engine out gasket maintenance already) info would be appreciated! You got me into the 335i!
Honestly, if you've got good supporting mods... just make sure you have a solid tune. Use good oil, frequent oil changes. Use good fuel, make sure spark plugs, ignition coils, and injectors are all healthy. Doesn't hurt to throw spark plugs at it after a couple thousand miles if you're hard on the car.
It's such a fun adventure taking an engine apart. I bet you're learning a lot, and it's also good to have Derek there, with a little more knowlege, to help and give some more thoughtful input. If I know you well, you are going to go back on your word on replacing with another stock engine, and are going to actually build this one. I know you can do it. Just upgraded rods, pistons, & bearings, that's all you really need, I'm sure. I don't think you need to do closed deck, unless you're looking to do 35+ psi or some crazy number like that for 1200hp. I would put more money into building the head for a higher redline, but you can always do that later. Right now, get that car running back to where you had it, just slightly better!!
I definitely learned a lot already during this process, and like you said, it's been great to have Derek helping me. He definitely knows what to look for, and is fun to hang around. Trust me, I want to build it up... but I know I'd go down an expensive rabbit hole. We'll see 😅
Great video 👍 lucky you caught the bent rod becuse now you know exactly your limit. If the engine broke up, it's not as conclusive if a piston, ring or rod broke first.
When money isn't the issue, i'd like to see you put a S65 or B58 in the next 1er. Make the 1M that BMW was to afraid to make because that likely would have been a slap to the face for the M3 sales.
Hey Jake, I sold my e82 recently and switched to the dark side, I now have an E63 AMG W211. ID BE interested in a m156 engine designed T shirt if your down. Or a w211 silhouette of the front end
#Jakespence ...hey do some give aways, maybe some of your old N54 parts good or bad parts...anything you dont need really.. i know if you were to be doing a give away on a part i could use i would definitely be buying some merch to try and win a give away... just a suggestion... i know your trying to make this your full time job now! im pretty sure at least %90 of people watching have an N54 of there own or at least have a BMW... just saying.. trying to help you out your videos are good and you could defiantly make so real deal money on this youtube stuff fulltime!! if you see this maybe i could like up threw DM i have a good amount of ideas a depending where your located i have tons of N54 parts and things, also im a mechanic so would love to help you out with the build ..then when your big you could return the favor... lol done rambling... keep it up! and get in touch!! 🤷♂
I mean you've got the engine apart already...I'd do bearings, forged pistons/rods at the very least because even the forged Maxspeeding rods from china are a substantial upgrade...If you tell them who you are it's more than likely they'll give you a free set in exchange for an honest review. (and nobody here will fault you for it) I've had an N54 catch fire lol...injector fitting came loose but I was a quick enough draw on the fire extinguisher that I was able to fix her on the side of the road and get home.
So the likelihood of breaking an n54 with stage 1 twins and a Wedge e40 tune @18-20 psi is slim to none? My guess is I'm around the 400whp mark, but the car suddenly started running rough after a spirited drive, and I knew it couldn't be the normal plugs, coils, injectors, hpfp/lpfp etc.. because it's all brand new. So I did a compression test and cylinder 4 is low @ 80 psi. Not sure how I managed to grenade an n54 at 400whp. I guess a leak down test will be next, heck it's possible cylinder pressure is getting past the injectors seal ??
Awesome video bro, I’ve been watching your videos for a long time now and love the content and shared knowledge you give :) I have a built n55 bottom end (forged & closed deck) on my M2 since I blew up a piston on a bad misfire. My dream is to create content on it like you do. I just gotta start!! Cheers
Idk how many miles are on this motor. I’ve tried to watch back a few videos and didn’t see anything. I currently have a 335xi and a 135i both n54. When my motor went on the 335 my motor looked really clean when I pulled the VC and oil pan. Later found out it was a leaking fuel Injector when the car was shut off that would leak past the cylinders that didn’t really show any signs of oil but when I pulled the oil pan it stunk of fuel. Idk if you smelt fuel at all when the pan was off but could be a cause and would explain why it was so clean inside because fuel will clean any smudge.
I must say you always look like you know a joke that nobody else does lol. Your eyes and face always look as if you are about to bust out laughing at any moment. Great content bro, I need to grow some balls and start posting content. Keep on killing it man!
My guess is you lifted the head and didn’t realize so you kept running it. Witch lead to water/coolant in the oil which is never good as we know. You were probably a single pull away from a big boom lol.
Good decision not to blow the motor for content. Grenading internals can take out other things under the hood. Good luck, I’m excited to see the rebuild. Still have the e90?
Depending on the ring gap and how rich you were running (especially on cold start) the ethanol can by going past the rings and mixing with the oil thinning it out. It's a possibility but who knows.
Not bad to achieve 800 hp and still have OEM internal parts and still almost running… get some high performance internal parts and you won’t have any metal parts in the oil… Don’t forget maintenance ☝️😑

We'll see 😅
Cool video 👍
Great video 👍 lucky you caught the bent rod becuse now you know exactly your limit. If the engine broke up, it's not as conclusive if a piston, ring or rod broke first.
Great to see!!
This is pretty great man, thanks!
I honestly think I learned the most from him cleaning up afterwards lol. I usually just have 3 or 4 jobs worth of tools in a pile lol
Lol, I always try to keep my stuff clean. It's a lot easier if you clean up after you're done with a job than have to deal with it the next time!
So you mentioned that you're going to go down the new junkyard motor route - what are you doing with the old engine since you pulled it apart?
Save it to build later when I have more $$$
Great video!! What oil were you using??
Motul Xcess 8100
How many miles on the engine and how much boost were u running
It had about 100k on it, and I was running 26-32psi
When money isn't the issue, i'd like to see you put a S65 or B58 in the next 1er. Make the 1M that BMW was to afraid to make because that likely would have been a slap to the face for the M3 sales.
Great look responding with the ❤️ on all comment to show us you read them. Vehicular diy and you Jake have done well for the n54 /55 owner
Any tell tale signs on the head gasket? Wonder if #6 got hydro locked somehow.
Nope, didn't see any evidence on the head gasket or mating surface.
Keep it going 💯💪
That's the plan! Thanks for watching.
I love that idea, and I think I'll have to do it in the new year!
I mean you've got the engine apart already...I'd do bearings, forged pistons/rods at the very least because even the forged Maxspeeding rods from china are a substantial upgrade...If you tell them who you are it's more than likely they'll give you a free set in exchange for an honest review.
(and nobody here will fault you for it)
I've had an N54 catch fire lol...injector fitting came loose but I was a quick enough draw on the fire extinguisher that I was able to fix her on the side of the road and get home.
What engine stand are you using? I had to put mine back on the hoist, it was very sketchy.
Man you are incredible
Lol thank you
So the likelihood of breaking an n54 with stage 1 twins and a Wedge e40 tune @18-20 psi is slim to none? My guess is I'm around the 400whp mark, but the car suddenly started running rough after a spirited drive, and I knew it couldn't be the normal plugs, coils, injectors, hpfp/lpfp etc.. because it's all brand new. So I did a compression test and cylinder 4 is low @ 80 psi. Not sure how I managed to grenade an n54 at 400whp.
I guess a leak down test will be next, heck it's possible cylinder pressure is getting past the injectors seal ??
Awesome video bro, I’ve been watching your videos for a long time now and love the content and shared knowledge you give :)
I have a built n55 bottom end (forged & closed deck) on my M2 since I blew up a piston on a bad misfire. My dream is to create content on it like you do. I just gotta start!!
Cheers
That's awesome! And you should man, like you said... just START!
I feel like u gotta anit freeze mixes in ur oil that's what it looks like in the Pan
Keep going
I'm gonna, but it sure helps to have comments like these as motivation 😀
Sweet videos!!
I must say you always look like you know a joke that nobody else does lol. Your eyes and face always look as if you are about to bust out laughing at any moment. Great content bro, I need to grow some balls and start posting content. Keep on killing it man!
Just put some pin in it with forge piston and rod
Let’s go!!! 😎
love it!!
Maybe fuel dilution due to the port injection?
You really need manley rods and je pistons and that's it
Wanna donate? Lol
My guess is you lifted the head and didn’t realize so you kept running it. Witch lead to water/coolant in the oil which is never good as we know. You were probably a single pull away from a big boom lol.
Definitely possible! Glad she didn't go boom lol
Yea man
🤘
Awesome video! Can’t wait for the next one :)
Good decision not to blow the motor for content. Grenading internals can take out other things under the hood. Good luck, I’m excited to see the rebuild.
Still have the e90?
Thanks! I still have the E90, just uploaded a video on it now actually.
Cool 👍🏿
🤔🤔🤔 Anyone know why an N54 has counter weights? I thought straight six's we're inherently balanced...
Depending on the ring gap and how rich you were running (especially on cold start) the ethanol can by going past the rings and mixing with the oil thinning it out. It's a possibility but who knows.
That's a good point, or I could've had a bad injector (DI or PI), spraying more fuel than needed. I'm really curious to get the oil analysis back...
yeee yeeee
The crank bearings look small I expected bigger surfaces
Lets goo
Not bad to achieve 800 hp and still have OEM internal parts and still almost running… get some high performance internal parts and you won’t have any metal parts in the oil…
Don’t forget maintenance ☝️😑
