When I was 23, and a new transplant from the Upper Peninsula to South Florida, I went to a fancy Brazilian steakhouse with my soon-to-be husband. I never drank and was embarrassed that I didn’t know how to order any drinks by name at the bar, so I panicked and told the young bartender that I’d have a pink squirrel. She looked at me like I was nuts and asked an older bartender what it was. He looked at me and said, “Well now, I haven’t had anyone order that in a LONG time! Coming right up!” He seemed genuinely pleased to make it, and the Yooper in me was happy 🥰
Did you like it?
@@DH-xw6jp yes! I knew what it was because my mom used to make Virgin pink squirrels for us when we were kids

I also come a line of Wisconsin dairy farmers!💪

I just shared this with a friend originally from Columbus, maiden name of Yerges. Familiar?

Hey dairy farmers, all of you, thank you. I know it's tough now, let's face it it's been tough for a while now, but thank you.
From a proud Wisconsin dairy farmer: Thanks for the shout out!
And from the rest of us, thank you for your work in dairy!
I always buy dairy when I shop
Wisconsinites know real milk comes from cows , NOT almonds or oats . We know our farmers are going through hell , you aren't forgotten , we salute you . Thanks for all you do .
Woo hoo!!! Can't have ice cream without a cow. Woo hoo farmers!!!
Crem- de minth
"Tastes like a hangover." Thank you farmers for taking care of us!
My first ever drink was a grasshopper made by my great aunt Carole. I was 14. She was perfect Korean War era wife... and a badass Midwestern career woman, and an artful, meticulous seamstress besides. The kind of woman who took a bar of soap down to the lake for her bath. The kind of woman to clean your fish and cook em too. Thanks for bringing her to mind.
Your great aunt Carole is a badass. I aspire to be like aunt Carole!
I'm greatful for folks like Carol. It takes the pressure off of ppl like me. I dnt have to worry about doing those things because I know there are Carols in the world.
"But I'm white, that's to be expected" 😂😂 truth
Hey Charlie, use Penzey’s Nutmeg, another Wisconsin business. Kepermovn.
True story: My brother and I were kids in the 80's (in Wisconsin!), and when we stayed overnight at our grandparents' house, my grandpa would make us grasshoppers before bed. Yes, WITH the booze. He knew how to get us to sleep. :D
Grandpa was done with you for the day and didn't want to hear a peep til morning. I have a little grand daughter, I understand
Matt Berg 😂😂 Exactly.
Is that why I was always allowed to have some of a Grasshopper and Brandy Old Fashioned around 8 or 9 o'clock up north?
TheSporkov Probably! 😂
And when you got older ate a big dinner during Thanksgiving grasshopper help settle the stomach.
Charlie Berens you are a national treasure!
lmfao, "gonna get lit up on some ice cream drinks." Same.
I wanna get chocolate wasted
This should be a bartending show on the food network or the food channel!! Hilarious, entertaining & educational 🤔😂😂
After watching this video I started doing cocktails every Friday night. Just something to make the quarentine more interesting
"and an extra dollop of cream. You know, for your heart" lmao
I just read these comments with a Wisconsin accent.
I am from New Jersey.
WHAT ACCENT! ?
Good Lord, I'm originally from Wisconsin, and have a fair time in Jersey, I cannot fathom the two mixed together!
We absolutely do not have accents here in Wisconsin, but over there in New Joisy you sure do!
There is no Wisconsin accent :)
4:22 "I'm offbeat, but I'm white. That's to be expected." LOVE IT!
I used to bartend at High Cliff Supper Club in Sherwood. I made tons of ice cream drinks! I always dreaded when the first person would order one, because once everyone at the bar saw the ice cream and heard the blender going, they would flood me with orders for more. I usually had 3 blenders going; one for grasshoppers, one for pink squirrels, and one for brandy alexanders. I always dreaded when someone would order a "banana banshee" or "Sex on the Cliff" (which was Kahlua and Baileys), cause then I'd have to clean out one of the blenders!
Andes candies, made in Delavan, Wisconsin 😊
we made Pink Squirrels with ice cream, when we were in college in the 1970s. This was in western Minnesota, though, so we obviously did things a little different.
There was a place in Chokio, a very small town about 25 miles from campus, that ONLY made ice cream drinks, and we would frequently pile in someone's car and drive there. This is making me all nostalgic and all.
Hey Charlie, I’m a farmer up in Ontario. The pandemic was rough on us here and just wanted to say it’s really nice to have someone give the farmers a little recognition. Always love your videos but I grew up in Chicago so I can’t repeat the tag line!!😂
Just give it a try one of these days, it's quite liberating 😝

Loveable, clean ,hilarious , intelligent comedy.!!!!!!
Dear Charlie, We were shocked and honestly lost sleep over your method of making a Brandy Alexander. We were born and raised in Wisconsin, but moved to Massachusetts and then Illinois. We learned never to order an Alexander out of Wisconsin, because they were always made with cream. In Wisconsin, we were raised on ice cream Alexanders, similar to Grasshoppers with ice cream. You also can't get a good Old Fashioned outside of Wisconsin, but that is another story. Please put ice cream in your Alexanders, so we can get a peaceful sleep.
"You also can't get a good Old Fashioned outside of Wisconsin"
I can't speak for the cream drinks because I don't ever have them, but you can get a well made old fashioned in many places. They key isn't the location, it's the establishment. If you want a decent old fashioned you have to go to a place that knows how to mix a cocktail properly (basically excluding all beer bars, sports bars, dive bars etc.) Also, a brandy old fashioned is a bastardization. The only two acceptable spirits used in an old fashioned are bourbon or rye.
@@SighNaps you must be real fun at partys
@@zano4140 Ha. I'm old and just a stickler for a good old fashioned. If someone wants to grab a few beers and a burger I'm up for any place.
Move out of Illinois, so you can get a peaceful sleep..
Dad made his with cream. Remember having those Christmas Eve as a child, less liquor but enough.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love this kinda stuff... Midwest American humor at its level best
These were all of my grandmother’s favorite cocktails. Oh my God but I love the way Charlie makes them way better than I did.
Love the very authentic junk drawer part !!! Thanks for shouts-out to WI farms ! I grew up on one/into my 30s, now I milk on occasion for my bff's farm, and they ship to Organic Valley !
When I was about 10 my Grandparents held a family reunion at The Spot in Green Bay. Me and all my cousins got to have Grasshoppers! Yes, with the booze. We were all between 8 and 14 years old! We all still talk about that party.
"Up Nort Remembers" the second best GOT reference on this channel, lol.
I can still remember Mom making Peach Brandy Alexanders with the homemade peach ice cream we had made earlier in the day. I was 15 - I don't really remember what happened after that.
Peach brandy Alexander! Whoa! That sounds awesome! Our parents & grandparents were so much cooler than us. Lots of love from Green Bay, friend! ❤
Sadly most Americans haven't been able to experience supper clubs. My favorite from 40 years ago is still open in Minnesoooooota.
I love supper clubs! Especially the ones in Door County.
Fysh there are many supper clubs open in Wisconsin. Check out the map on google or something.
I'm in Minnesota dontchaknow, where's the supper club your talkin about?
Visited my first supper club last year on my trip to Wisconsin. Boyfriend had been talking them up for years and I'll admit I wasn't quite getting it.
Turns out.... supper clubs are heaven on Earth! Absolute Midwestern magic. :)
@@michellebilodeau3882 I love going to the Nightengale in Sturgeon Bay!
This reminds me of great-grandparents. When they were in their late 80s, they didn’t want anything for Christmas except for a really big bottle of Baileys Irish Cream. 😂
My family doesn't get it when I put it in my morning coffee - "you're drinking at 9 in the morning?!". My response to that is always "Bailey's isn't alcohol!".
Lesley Patterson Exactly. 17% alcohol by volume is nothing. Pshaw!
If you haven't tried it I highly recommend Buffalo Trace Bourbon now makes a bourbon cream, great in coffee, also makes some great french toast.
When not at work if there’s a cup of coffee in my hand there’s a 100% guarantee that there’s Irish cream in it
Coffee isn’t coffee without Irish cream
Regardless of the time of day
Chanhassen dinner theater in Chanhassen, MN makes these fancy cocktails too.
Best fellow Wisconsinite (All Wisconsinites are family)
Except for the freaks who blew up the Army Math Research Center killing a father of three and former mayor Paul Soglin who celebrated communism. But yeah, we do a good job of ignoring the freaks and embracing life. My point is no place is Paradise

@@JL-yl8gd That's right. Delightful people and pretty disgusting that they weren't run out of town at the very least and in some ways celebrated. (I'm not going to say all Wisconsinites are family but I get Fazbear's sentiment)
Sheboygan here. i totally feel this comment
Good memories, I don’t even remember the name of the supper club, but it was Up Nort, in the middle of now wheres and their Grasshoppers and Pink Squirrels were so good. Old guy behind the bar always said a squirrel had to have nuts.
What pleasure to watch - so many, many, many humorous points. I would indulge in any of those drinks, sounds enjoyable. I'm not from Wisconsin but I appreciate that you promote your local dairy farmers. Thank you for yet another entertaining video!
Loren8762 fyi no ice in the grasshopper
Brooo are you serious??? How old are you 😂
Me: is a Dairy Farmer in Virginia, never even been to Wisconsin
Charlie: happy cows come from Wisconsin not California
Me: GD RIGHT THEY DO
EDIT: Haha he mentioned Organic Valley that’s who we sell milk to
Da important ting is dat yer not from da California. Cali overtook da great dairy state o' Wisconsin in milk production years ago and us Wisconsinites have never forgotten. Like da Alamo. 😭😭😭 It's okay, just cuz dey make more don't mean it's better! 😁 Keep er movin dere in Virginia! 😁.
UPDATE: Also, not to get unpleasantly political but we've got to support the farmers. If it's true Canadian farmers are better protected than in the U.S. because of milk price supports, then we should have that here. ☹️ Also, I'm seeing ads for dairy again. The "got milk" ad era should never have left. Too much market share lost to alternative mylks. Foolishly maybe, I thought dairy was still doing okay cuz of the demand for cheese and Greek yogurt.
I second Patrick, thank you for your work and passion
Virginia's dairy cows are happy cows
Forever grateful to dairy farmers, me as a 3 year old was lucky to have the most patient cow in the World that evening as I was first taught to milk her.
I love dairy farmers! My Grampa was a dairy farmer in Bear Creek, Wisconsin. Goooooo mooooooo!!! 🐄🐄🐄🍦🥛🍦
Thanks for your Work... Farmers are Our Backbone..and The Government aint Helping ya none.

Married a Wisconsin girl. Best thing that I ever did!😊 Love doing the drink tours when we visit Wisconsin Supper Clubs
Thank You Beautiful Cows
Here on the eastern shores of Lake Winneconne, we have 4 really good supper clubs within 20min. 30 min gets us to the ultimate throwback club "The Pine Tree" just west of New London (I think it's technically in Royalton). Just one of the many reasons I came back "home" from spending two decades out on the west coast in the Navy. Missed three things; Supper clubs on Friday nights, Thunderstorms and Ice fishing!
The Rainbow Club in New London! As a little, always felt so grown up going there. And da growed ups drank da supper club drinks.
Hmmmm tastes like a hangover 😂😂😂
Four fingers if your serious about it, lol.
Supporting any dairy farmer is wonderful, anytime, pandemic or not.
I grew up in northern Minnesota, not too far from Fargo/Moorhead.
All small dairy farmers, Minnesota or Wisconsin, I am sure appreciate your shout out.
Thanks for the farmer appreciation farm out in Ohio.
Good call, I miss the supper clubs. Always really crowded on a Friday night. The drive out to them was always good fun too -
Just like a Saturday Night at the Dorf Haus in Roxbury, Wisconsin.

Some of the best steaks back in the 80's... next time back will have to stop if still open.
I remember it was a big deal to go to the Supper Club for dinner on a Friday or Saturday night. My parents always splurged and Dad would have a whiskey seven and Mom would have a sloe gin sour and I would be allowed a Shirley Temple. 🤩
Glad you used Sassy Cow ice cream that’s the best!
I started work at a supper club when I was 15. That's where I met my husband. The cop and the waitress. We've been married 40 years now. And no you dirty minds, I didn't date him till I was 19.

But some goofy law here in Wisconsin you can't be called a supper club if you serve food before 4:30.

This was literally my childhood! Grasshoppers at Skytop Supper Club in Stevens Point, WI!! The best.

Charlie; you are hilarious, and completely right on. I am from Wisconsin. I love your videos
I was in California at a cheese producer and they told me about their happy cows. They even went further and said that Wisconsin cows were "bitchy." As a Wisconsinite I was very offended. We drove by some pastures where there wasn't a green blade of grass in sight, no trees - just some water troughs with corrugated tin roofs and it essentially was a desert! I bet they don't show the reality in their advertisements. I still pisses me off when I think about it.
I've lived in both Wisconsin and California. To be honest I hated the taste of California dairy products. The milk tasted like milk flavored water, and the eggs tasted like sulphur. I saw some dairy farms out there and compared to Wisconsin cows, those poor things look like they're starving.
Bit of projection there for someone to call cows in another state bitchy
Moved out to San Francisco in 2004 and my wife and I would travel the 5 down to San Diego a few times a year, and before reaching the Bakersfield area, there would be a smell of death. The first time driving down, we couldn’t figure out where the smell was coming from, until the roadside hills flattened out, giving us a view of the area. It looked as if the land was moving. We pulled over to take a photo, as it was an unbelievable mass of cows, just roasting in the scorching valley heat. Like Bob said, there’s no trees or other forms of shelter for the cows to escape from the sun. In the valley it’s quite common for daily temperatures to hit 100° and go up to 115°.
Dairy is rape and ALL cows suffer no matter where they are.
Hey @@timothy3732 ya know how to spot a vegan? Just wait a minute he'll tell you himself. And stop calling it rape, you sound like the #metoo movement. #mootoo
Using the bobber as a straw is brilliant.
Some of us farmers are being asked to reduce our milk production by 30% PLEASE buy dairy products locally
Itzr Dang. My small town store has only been selling pints of half n half and cream. I’m scared 🥺😉
I been eatin da cheese like it's goin' out of style. And yet, no relief for the farmers. I better check my neighbors' fridges and make sure they're complying. 😭
Hey, I know it's been tough, and it's been tough for a long time in dairy, hang in there. We need folks just like yourself, thank you for your hardwork, dedication, and passion
Ohio dairy farmers were already sending dairy herd to auction last year. Been buying my milk from Amish, cheese from a farm that only specializes in cheese curds and ice cream after state put restrictions on them.

Christina Cope I’ve been noticing!
In 1999 when I was 21 I started tending bar at a very well known jazz club that had a speakeasy vibe and very diverse clientele, lots of my customers LOVED to dabble in the drinks of Hemingway and earlier eras! It was UNIQUE and those skills have proven to be invaluable because I’m now a nurse but I do get called upon for survival occasions and people LOVE the themed party and making a drink menu tailored to the era and theme is FUN, it also limits how much crap you gotta buy and lug around!!
It’s exciting to see a revival of bygone times because the past can be quite an adventure too!
@@KateCarew absolutely true. We do themed parties, I wonder if I can get the gang to go with themed drinks.

Oh, man, this is awesome! Day before yesterday it suddenly popped into my head how much I would love to have a couple of Brandy Alexanders or maybe a grasshopper. I learned how to make these back in 1966 when I was working in a bar in Augusta, Georgia. I haven’t had one of these in literally decades. Creme de Noyeaux is almond flavored, and clear creme de cacao is used in grasshoppers. His technique wasn’t perfect, but I appreciate the homage. And we even had a few supper clubs there that operated illegally after hours. Somebody was getting paid off. Loved how he changed into the elegant bathroom to complement the rest of his outfit. Cool video.
