    1:46 piccolo could barely be heard. It barely projected

      the score requires "in the distance" in her solo a few bars later, so she's back there for the entire opening. Interestingly, the score states the same requirement for the Eb clarinet too ("across the stage"), but he stays seated with the clarinets. Odd.

    Zander's head is so buried in the score it's like he's seeing it for the first time, just trying to beat time. I think the orchestra could have played it just fine without him up there.

      No, he’s playing it according to Ravel’s tempo. You’re just used to people playing it too fast!
