I think both the principal violinists nearly got tears in their eyes, swept away by this beautiful piece of music being, so well performed...
Rest In Peace Ravel. He passed away 82 years ago today after complications from brain surgery.
The music world would be incredibly different if he hadn’t died at 62 years old.
Makoto Free The saddest thing about Ravel’s passing is the rumour that he died feeling that he had not accomplished enough in his life. For a man who published a rather small amount of music, he is one of the most influential composers of all time and I hope, wherever he is, he knows that.
@@TomCL-vb6xc And with that rather small amount of music, his music moved me the way no one else did, and he is without a doubt one of my favorite composers. I can't imagine the history of classical music without Ravel.
Brain surgery 82 years ago?.. I wouldn't dare even think about it! Poor man.
I think he more than left his mark on music - I can’t imagine film scores being anywhere near as good as they are without Ravel - his influence on people like John Williams is palpable . No Star Wars without Ravel !
@@TomCL-vb6xc Pretty sure Ravel doesn't have the ability to care about not "accomplishing enough" during his time on earth lol. Best part of being dead is you lose the ability to give a shit
this is some of the most beautiful music I know it makes be so emotional each time especially playing it when I did with odyssey festival orchestra
This has been one of my favourite pieces of music since I saw Margot Fonteyn and Michael Somes dancing it so many years ago. And Simon Rattle feels it so passionately. Utterly beautiful....think I would like it played at my funeral. Thank you Ravel for giving it to us all 💗💗💗💗
When I was in high school oh so many years ago my Dad installed headphones to our stereo system…all we had we’re LP vinyls in those days. So I shut out the world and immersed myself in the glory of this work. I was so convinced I’d died and gone to heaven and didn’t want to return. How Id love to hear THIS version on headphones
One of my favorite compositions conducted by one of my favorite conductors and performed flawlessly by my ABSOLUTE favorite orchestra! Doesn’t get any better than this! And I so admire when a conductor has a score memorized. He.didn’t use a score for The Rite of Spring either. OMG, listen to those strings soar!! ❤️❤️❤️ I live watching Sir Rattle’s passionate conducting
🌿Yes, yes, yes..........☘🌿🍃☀️🌹
1:22 Never has a Viola section sounded so beautiful!
This must be what heaven looks like , endless beautiful sunrises , the tender brush of travellers joy as you walk through a sublime forest of flora and fauna, animals who in this life would be fearful of you , are wandering up to you to be caressed by you - just sublime . And the LSO , best orchestra in the world .
It just doesn’t get any better than this. Absolute perfection. Ravel took note for note dictation directly fom God on this one. Thank you, sir, and thank you LSO and Sir Rattle, and bravissimo to the flutist for his beautiful performance of that very formidable solo!
For some reason this piece gives me goosebumps all over-
17 minutes long - but 17 minutes of sustained genius
Try the complete ballet, of which this is the third and final section (more or less). It's around 55 minutes long.
I have yeah, its all amazing , its like an extended version of the 2nd suite
Amazing how big the flute section is here! ❤
It truly does sound like dozens or tropical birds singing, doesn’t it? Incredible masterpiece
There’s no highlight in D&C since everypart is just overpowerly amazing, every details are perfect.
Love the performance, bring the tears and ecstasy to me.
“Who need Netflix if we have this”.
This is a stunning performance, with every part coming out clear and balanced. Bravo. Nice visual editing too, and excellently recorded.
purrr-phict description.
This
Outstanding performance
What an absolutely sublime performance of one of my absolute favorites!
Beautifully shot video, with superb performance
Just amazing ... genius writing for orchestra...
C'est tout simplement superbe.
Intense, magique et emporte l'âme vers l'infini.
That glowing muted string sound at 6:04 gave me chills
Oh, Ravels flute concert! (Smile ...).
BEAUTIFUL SOUND!
Awesome piece of music
Excelente conducción de Simón Rattle. La sinfónica de Londres la admiro y en esta ocasión interpretando una obra tan destacaday compleja . Me emociona.
Thank you, I have goose bumps!
BRILLANTE..UN PLACER ESCUCHAR UNA MARAVILLOSA ORQUESTA Y UN EXCELENTE DIRECTOR
I think LSO is the world’s best instrumental ensemble. The Brits do instrumental performance really well. (I missed the chorus in this, though.)
Gorgeous! Thank you for sharing!
Sensational! One of the best ever!
Glory to God
Amazing performance !
Sublime Simon!
What a performance.
My guy made a mistake at 2:58 lol, my man wasn't counting LOL
And he knows it lmao
True ... but he certainly made up for it later.
Not even blaming him, doing such a hard passage while the rest of the orchestra does something else and the conductor is offbeat. I'd have my blood freezing if i knew i had to play this piece
@@leonardocilento786 Offbeat? He was beating ahead.
Thank you.
MUCH BETTER than the version with the Berlin Philharmoniker!
Maurice Ravel 💜
Bravo!!!
Wundershön
very beautiful thank you on youtube.
¡¡¡Fantástica!!! ...👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Ecouter ce morceau ainsi interprété constitue une expérience sensorielle.
So I’m like 95% positive Les Baxter copied the intro to his 1959 exotica track ‘Amazon Falls’ from this Suite 2 opening “Lever du jour”. They are VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL in the intros.
I would totally argue this isn’t chance as ‘Daphnis et Chloé’ is now widely regarded as some of the best “Impressionistic” music from the turn of the century. Almost 50 years later when Les Baxter, Denny Martin, and Percy Faith were creating “Exotica” as we now call it (they called it “mood music”) with those lush tropical stringed arrangements utilizing bongos, various percussion, maracas etc. I really do believe they were using these European Impression influences for their inspiration.
Of course exotica has a much more pacific-islander feel probably meant to evoke memories of the South Pacific for the American G.I.’s who were drinking in all those mid-century lounges after WWII back then, along with modern Jazz that came out of the Big Band era, but the differences between these styles of music bear an incredible amount of similarities.
Magnífico
7:29 flute solo
His pinky though!
Wow!🎶Bravo!❕👏
soooo good
Hell yeah!
Meraviglioso!!
Su questo posso essere d'accordo! Hanno fatto un lavoro meraviglioso e magnifico su questo! Ti devo 10 stelle su 10, London Symphony Orchestra!
great
Magnificent, and wonderfully engaging to see this up and close, not just hear.
#OdedFriedGaon #OdedMusic #Audioded
Magnificent, but sadly, missing the wordless chorus. That adds such an ethereal nature to the work.
The chorus was never part of the Suite's orchestration. That is only part of the entire ballet itself.
I 💯 second this. The chanting isn’t noticed until it’s missed, but adds such atmosphere!
@@Quotenwagnerianer That’s not always true. You are correct about many live performances omitting the choir, but if you listen to Pierre Boulez’s famous 1995 recording with the Berliner Philharmoniker, they absolutely kept the background vocals and it makes a huge difference as the OP above already mentioned.
@@clintgolub1751 That's because the Boulez recording is of the complete ballet, not the Orchestral Suite no.2, which is what Rattle is conducting here. Suite 2 is essentially the third (and final) part of the complete ballet, but without the wordless chorus.
I agree up to a point but I love the orchestra version more and this one is just off the charts brilliant
❤️
This is a religious experience….a dream I don’t want to wake from
Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar Rüyalar hikayesinde geçiyordu bu parça onun için burdayım :)
Flute solo 7:20
11:12 concertmaster solo
Is that Gareth Davis on alto flute? Also that Eb clarinet solo is fantastic both musically and technically!
yes!
And Adam Walker on the big flute solo, beautifully paced. 7:20
Wow, only if they could add choir. Otherwise almost perfect
They make this piece sound easy but for woodwinds it's exceptionally difficult. It's pages of nothing but black.

Are there more percussionists then usual for this score in this video?
No, but there are more THAN usual :)
@@fingerhorn4 Making fun of someone's errors in a language that is not his first one is commendable, of course.
When you guys will upload the full Vietnam Airlines Classic video? The stream video was deleted :'((
YESYESYESYESYESYESYEA
Beautiful composition and conduction but adverts every 2mins make it unwatchable
Is it just or does the beginning sound like Laura
Huh?

Read the description of that video you linked. There lies the answer.
worst placed ads I've ever seen
I know that it's not always possible to perform this with the chorus, but it's just a bit underwhemling without it.
I much prefer it without the chrus!
I know I will be vilified here but that is one of the oddest renditions of the flute solo ever - in terms of sound and phrasing......
Not sure I agree , however was this not possibly as a result of what seemed to be a slower than usual tempo for that particular part ? Just a thought . Sound seemed fine to me .
I think I understand what you mean. I don't think Sir Rattle and the principal flute were together...almost like he missed a cue? Nevertheless, the work is a masterpiece and it was a beautiful performance - not saying the rendition of the flute solo was bad but it was definitely was just different. I kinda felt like the flute section was a little delayed at some parts from the beginning up until that point but just after the trill (after the solo) they really sounded super together.
@@brianellory28 I think his rubati were just interestingly placed...it kinda shifted (delayed?) how the harmonies are supposed to just melt into what's happening..great performance either way!
I will take that thought about rubarto and maybe we ask the flautist what his thoughts are !
Why does not anyone look at the conductor?
Haha, to busy reading the score
The conductor does most of his work during the rehearsals.
@@peterfitton4529 lol
@@PETRIK_Lajos The conductor shapes the performance during rehearsals, going through the finer points of the score and directing things like phrasing, dynamics, attack, feel etc that can't be fully conveyed by the written notation alone. The final performance is his interpretation of the score and he is responsible for the performance as a whole, in the same way that a director is responsible for a film. And in fact, if you play close attention, the players *do* actually look at him during the performance.
@@peterfitton4529 Of course. 2×2 is usually 4, but here it is 5. Thanks for explaining. Perhaps it might be worth checking with the other few million musicians, who pay close and conspicuous attention to the conductor, and follow his instructions during a performance. Well, either they are stupid -- or there is no point in listening to Rattle, and they had rather follow the first violinist. As so often with talentless conductors...

The version by Yu Nakajima is better.
There is no better in music at this level, just different.
prep0wer Whoever that guy might be
Who is Yu Nakajima…?
I am japanese but I haven't heard that name.
@@ilpdrgyj6886
He's irrelevant to our Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa.
Everything is not a comparison.
