I was in a busy and noisy bar this night and I suddenly remembered that it was Johnny's last night and told the bartender to turn on the TV . It was the final 10 minutes , and the entire bar stopped whatever they were doing to see his send-off. Jukebox was un-plugged , pool tables went dark , and no one complained . It was a MAJOR show of respect in my mind , for a man who whole heartedly deserved it .

I was living in Uganda in the middle of a rainforest. My mother sent me a VCR tape of the last show. I remember laying in the front of a Land Rover with the camcorder plugged into the cigarette lighter and watching Johnny's last show. I had tears in my eyes - homesickness and the loss of a TV show of my childhood. God bless you, Johnny.

Bear in mind too that neither Ford, Carter, Reagan, nor Bush were hell bent on destroying the United States of America domestically and internationally. Unlike the world of today's late night hosts, Johnny Carson's America was not a country in which a small, radical faction of political extremists had usurped power and were carrying out policies pleasing to the Kremlin. Even Nixon-corrupt and criminal though he was-would never have dreamt of selling out the United States to the Soviet Union (Nixon was a Navy veteran, remember). Contemporary American fascism is now being rightly, publicly, and vocally opposed by people of all political persuasions and of all walks of life-including late night television hosts.

He performed a task - he interviewed celebs with some pre made-out cards typed by his staffers, he told jokes written for him by a staff of 20. He had guests that had no choice but go on his show. He was good at it, of course, he had 30 years of practice. Brilliant? I don't think so.

Johnny truly was the "King of Late Night Entertainment." Many thought they could steal his Crown, and Oh were they Wrong. For almost 25 years Johnny tucked me in at night. He left while still defining his craft, At the Top of His Game, and sadly left us all much too soon after retiring. Johnny Carson was the best interviewer among the talk show hosts! He had a knack for putting people at ease and getting things out of them with his easygoing mannerisms.

You can't get someone under 30 to understand Johnny and the Tonight show from the 60's to when he retired. Every person in the country either watched or would hear about it the next day: "Hey, did you hear what Johnny said about X last night?" There was no one who did not know who he was. When I was a little kid in the early 60's the TV was right next to my bedroom door and I would listen to him because my parents always watched Johnny. When he retired I was 31 years old and I had never known a time without him. It was downright weird that Johnny was no longer a part of my life. Never be another like him.

I was eight years old when Johnny Carson went off the air for the last time... and I remember sitting with my dad as he let me watch Johnny... until the jokes got sexual and he’d send me to bed. As a grown man, I appreciate the class Johnny exuded... and THESE MUSICIANS.... WORLD CLASS!!!! He’s the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be!

I honestly remember watching this during my senior year in college during a happy hour I used to frequent because I could buy one beer and get all you can eat ribs so it made a cheap dinner. I hadn't watched Carson in years but I remember watching that goodnight at the bar and saying to myself that it was the end of an era.

I may be repeating myself on here but I want to say that when I first heard that Carson was leaving the Tonight Show I was heartbroken. Not only was Johnny going to be gone but I just new that there would be a whole generation of talent that would disappear with him. Who would give them the time the way Johnny did? Sadly I was right. I miss this era. Cheers!

As a kid, Friday nights (and all through summer) I would watch this show with my dad. We watched this finale together and he said at the end "it will never be the same again." Well, Leno carried the torch wonderfully...then Fallon dropped it along with ALL of late night. Such class vs. such trash today...

I can remember what a special treat it was to 'stay up' and watch Johnny Carson at my grandmother and aunt's house in Blytheville Arkansas. This was something that never happened on regular school nights, so it being a special time with my grandmother and aunt makes the Tonight Show a very special memory. Thank you Johnny for wonderful memories of growing up.

@@alex5308 -Ha! You should not be so honest... A big problem now and there is no way to rectify it is...we are all now the culture of too much. There is way way too much of everything and that includes what is good. Nobody is on the same page at the same time. The past is now never dead with the internet, and it's constant stupid squabbles on who is better LeBron or MJ-Beatles Vs. Stones etc. and way too much to absorb, and what it means anymore, with tons more options and distractions than in the mid seventies when i was going to High School through the eighties.

The man had that rare gift to bring warmth and calm. You knew he was listening to his guests and responded to what they said rather than ready with the next quick question or joke. A true natural. Thank goodness we have RUclips to watch him at any time. I must have watched hundreds of shows having grown up in the '60s. Thanks for the laughs the tears and the memories.
