MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor Mecanum Wheels drives in EVERY Direction

- Watch how I connected four Mecanum wheels to the four motors of the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor 51515 kit. The result is an amazing car that can drive in every direction and turn around its axis. Here’s how to assemble and program the Mecanum wheels.

Mecanum wheels are a lot like omni-wheels. The omniwheels are also known as rotocasters or holonomic wheels. An Omniwheel has no lateral grip and would go everywhere. But Mecanum wheels are different. Unlike rotocasters, the Mecanum wheels have diagonally oriented rolls. If you push a wheel like that sideways, it starts to rotate! Some people call this type of wheel the Swedish wheel or Ilon wheel after its inventor, Bengt Erland Ilon. Ilon came up with the concept while working with the Swedish company Mecanum AB.
I used these wheels:

Amazing! Well done.
🌼🍯🌼🍯🌼 I wait for yours new projekt with wheels mecanum LEGO 🦄🌼🦄
Nice!
Always the best robotic wheels
An idea for the next video could be the combination with the internal accelerometer and compass to generate a path present on past FLL/ WRO example designs and compare it with traditional steering models. Also how repetitive and precise is the behavior to turn around a rectangle, a circle, or an eclipse after for instance 10, ... 60 turns (with and without adding line follow algorithms).
This is possible, but it requires an extra positioning system with a rotocaster or photo positioning. A friend of mine did some really nice work here.

Wow
Wow it is soooooo great!!!♡♡^^☆☆
Lego it's fun
Hello Anthon 😺😺😺 Greate Job⭐💯 WooHoo
Thank you 🤗
Пойду куплю себе такие же колеса :)
Enjoy!
Hello
Where do you buy the wheels? Brilliant!
I added the links in the description! They were also in the cards.

Ah man you could make an awesome Batman Tumbler-style tank with this technique! I guess with 4x motors and needing a mindstorms controller, and the custom parts, it's probably a little too expensive to become an official set.
Yes, I'm actually working on that. But it is really hard to make it fully functional. I want to make the one from the computer game that can go into turret mode.
Antons is possible you print me the 3d printed part?
There are other omni wheels out there that are a bit cheaper - is there any particular reason to use the 97mm ones vs (say) 80mm ones with a hex axle hole? Thanks!
Oops, meant Ilon wheels (just realised omnis are different)!
No reason. 80mm will work fine. I just got these for free.
Thanks Anton, that's great. My son and I are going to make 2 cars for races etc. so we'll need 8 wheels. Those 97s do look cool though!
Anton
what app did you use?
My own app. It's free in the appstore. Link in description and cards!
May I make the suggestion, this article as a PDF? Personally, I am not keen on RUclips videos at all.
There is a link to my blog in the description.
