Ah the good old days. I’ve a 1982 dryer, 1998 washer, 2010 fringe, and a 1994 electric stove in daily use, and nary a touch screen or wifi connectivity amongst them !
I highly recommend vacuuming the dryer vent and the tube running to the outside. Our laundry room has a long outside vent run and every 5 years I run a flexible vent brush through the tube. The amount of lint that comes out is frightening.
My mother's dishwasher started developing this crusty white build up on all of its interior stainless surfaces. I discovered that it was because she was pre-rinsing (and in some cases even washing) her dishes and pots. The dishwasher detergent pod had no grease or food particles to break down, and it was causing build up and etching her dishwasher instead. What she thought was helping her dishwasher, was actually slowly corroding it away.
Yep, too much soap for load. My water is very soft, I found I need to put the wash tab only in the pre-rinse to get a better clean. Previously I was breaking the tab in half and split the tab between the pre-wash and wash cycles. This left the glassware with a weird dishwasher taste.
Don't forget about that appliance in your garage or basement. The hot water heater. One tip that will prolong its life that most people don't even know exists is to replace the anode. It is a rod of aluminum or zinc that corrodes away so that the water tank does not. Replace it every 3-5 years, so that it can keep doing its job. If you have never done it, you will be amazed when you take it out for the first time, because it won't even be recognizable compared to a new one. Also drain the tank and cycle the water through it to the drain to clean out any sand residue that collects in it.
I purchased a Maytag washer and gas dryer in 1994. Perhaps this was near the end of the era of Maytag's heyday? They run 3 to 5 loads week in and week out. In that time, other than replacing the water supply lines every 10 years, I have not done a single thing to the washer! The dryer has had drum rollers replaced twice and a moisture sensor replaced once (all by me). I intend to run the pair as long as I can. They just don't make 'em like this anymore!
Hi! I used my mother old washer and dryer, until can not find parts! If you lucky the new ones may last 9 years now! They won’t make it like they used to! 🤗💯
Our Maytags were bought in 1990. Haven’t done anything to the washer. The dryer has had the heater assembly replaced twice, the belt once, and A week ago the rollers. All done by me.

Ben, I had to chuckle when you started talking about microwaves. We have a microwave we use several times daily, an Emerson, that we bought when we did a kitchen remodel at another house in 2008. On our 20 year old Jenn Air bottom freezer fridge I have replaced both the compressor and freezer fans, and the ice maker - the coating flaked off making the ice stick in the mold. I'd rather spend $100 than $2-$3 K for a new fridge.
My house doesnt even have a breaker box to install the surge protector in. I still have to replace glass fuses and those cartridge fuses when I overload a circuit lol
To add surge protection to an appliance only requires a MOV (metal oxide varistor) circuit. These are very cheap and should be designed into any machine that cannot handle surges. Relying on a homeowner to provide surge protection is risky.
I bought a Maytag dishwasher back in 1995 and it is still running today. I bought another Maytag DW for my vacation house in 2010 and it only lasted 2 years. I've had good luck using simple green and an old credit card to clean stove tops. The trick is to keep the crusty part wet with simple green for about 30 minutes.
Hello Ben's I have the notorious Problematic Frigidaire FFHB2750TS Rev 9 that's only 3 years old and gently used by myself only. I had the typical Ice-maker air leak problem so carefully took everything apart and improved on the already poorly factory installed band aid that makes sure the defrosted moisture drains good and all air gaps sealed. The factory has the defrost timer setting to run at about 12 hour intervals and I have verified water flow out of both tubes at the bottom during the cycles. There is no ice build up in any of the coils locations but 3-5 minutes into every defrost cycle you get LOUD Shotgun blast K-Pows from several areas of the unit. These are much more violent than just plastic/metal expansion noise. Any ideas as what it is?
My microwave has been the best appliance I've ever had. 1985 Sharp Carousel 2, $450 when new, I'm so afraid of buying a new one because I'll get 6 months to 2 years out of it.
I had to get a new water heater about 10 years ago. Before I set it in place I removed the plastic bottom drain and installed a brass valve. I used to drain heaters at vacant houses & had the worst time getting some of those to work after years of mineral deposits. I run a hose from mine every 6 months to flush it.
Hi Ben, big fan of your informative videos. Off topic, but a GE French door refrigerator was just delivered to my place today. I didn't notice the delivery guys leveling it, but I wasn't in the room the entire time. Might being unlevel cause issues? Thanks. Oh, and I bought a Gibson front loading washer and dryer in 1998. The washer died two years ago, but the dryer is still going. Neither ever needed repair, but I did have to replace the dryer's cycle knob, which I found online. Are you familiar with the brand? I think Gibson is (was?) made by Whirlpool or another manufacturer.

Very, very, very durable. The longest lasting machines on the market. The best in other regards? Thats up for a big debate anymore due to energy/efficiency standards. Its hard for their machines to do an amazing job of cleaning clothes with the way the EPA makes things now
Hello Ben. I have some questions on a new GE Side by Side refrigerator model GSS25GYPGCFS. Upon initial hooking it up how long with settings at 0 degrees for freezer and 37 degrees for refigerator , refrig and freezer empty, should the fans be cycling and when should first defrost occur? Also there seems to be a delay of about 2 hours between the display temperature and the real temperature. I know this because when i check the temperature with a temperature laser gun at the vents inside they are sinificantly different than the display readings. Thanks in advance Ben. Have a good day. I appreciate your videos to.
Typically, fans shut off during defrosting. 2hrs of time between changing temps and it actually shifting the temps are normal. It has to cool the air down to actually change the temp, and that does take time for the machine to do it. Opening the doors up and letting the cold air out to check the temps with a gun is usually a great way to make it take a lot longer to cool down when there's nothing in the fridge. Refreigerators need items in themselves to store up heat mass (or lack of it) so the temps don't shift as much w/ doors open. So no mass + opening doors leads to much more rapid swings.
Hi, I watch your channel a lot and see that you have a lot of knowledge. I would like your advice at the moment. I have a construction worker Zen Wa Eco 9281 and a Bosch heat pump dryer that often break down with expensive machines. Then I saw the GE Ultrafast in you. videos on you tube These 220 volt / 240 volts are also from LG Top Loaders or Speed Queen. I am willing to spend some money on good equipment. What is made here in Europe is no longer of good quality. I am from Belgium, outside of Miele and Liebherr, but they are very expensive and difficult to make yourself. maintained and where can I buy these machines from the USA? I have seen that you sell parts on your web site so that is not a problem for the future. I would like your advice whether I should buy a combo washing and drying machine or top loader with agitator I live in. on the same floor with my wife who does the laundry and she wants good machines, no messy machines, greetings cis😃
I have a refrigerator (new) that sits in an alcove and, unfortunately there is only about an inch of clearance at the back wall. Would sitting out a section of the wall at the rear and putting a vent panel on the wall help to provide better air flow for the lower part of the fridge?
My new Samsung top load washer needs to run a cleaning cycle after 40 some odd washes. I would think that adds more wear and tear to the parts, as well as it uses lots of hot water. What do you think of this new to me process please? Thank you for all the valuable videos and expertise!!
On GE ALL IN ONE Profile Washer/Dryer Combo, the Credit card was in the pocket and is now stuck between the 2 tubes, what is the best way to remove it?
if your water is extremely soft virtually no minerals, would you need to use vinegar to clean washer or just something like oxi clean for cleaning cycle
If that customer thinks y'all sold her a lemon of laundry appliances and not because she's overloading them, then she'll have the same thought about every model any of the other retailers sell her.
yah the stupid builder put the driver vent access thru the floor, making a 180 degree turn instead of wall, then runs 24 feet to outside. which barely meets code in the state I live in. And Because of it I kind of have to have a flexible line from dryer to dryer vent thought I try to have as little bends in it as possible . because of this I have had gone thru 3 dryers in 20 years. the Whirlpool one lasted the longest. the Samsung the shortest. There was also a Frigidaire as well that was ehh ok. now its on a Maytag (Whirlpool) again, old basic design tried and true simple. I think its basic design goes back to the 70s and also how old sears kenmore dryers were designed.
this white LG dryer i have in my apartment JUST died on me, I can tell the either the sensor or rotor are cooked cause the motor is spinning so poorly and stalling out, has a 10year warranty and died at 12 😥
@Ikey04-ge9gy Samsung top load washers usually have two parts that commonly fail: drain pump and suspension rods. But these happen after 3-4 years. They don't usually have lid lock or board issues. They are far more reliable and last longer without major repairs being needed in comparison to GE and Whirlpool.
You forgot the most important thing - dont put towels on the handle for the stove if it has a glass front. Glass will unevenly heat and go pop. Also I am sad you didnt demonstrate dropping heavy/metal on the stove for our learning.
Almost all of the advice in this video is sensible. There was one recommendation I found impractical. That recommendation was cleaning the dryer ducting. Doing so requires moving the dryer, disconnecting the ducting, and cleaning it using a tool a homeowner is unlikely to own unless they remove the ducting and flush it with water. No homeowner is going to go to that effort. Heck, most homeowners don't even flush their water heater annually and doing that requires far less effort. Using rigid ducting is ideal but, again, impractical for most installations given the minimal clearances around the dryer when in its working location.
Flush it with water... what? You need a $25 brush set. That's it. Much cheaper than paying someone $150 to clean the ductwork for you, and cheaper than a service call as well.
“Read the manual” The manual has like 50 pages about types of liquids to not submerge the microwave in. Would be great of everybody could just read the lord of the rings novel manual’s for every single device they own. Why cant everybody just be a licensed maintenance professional as a side skill in addition to cook, lawyer, doctor, physicist, mathematician, pharmacist, and their full time career? It’s just one tiny little extra bit of work
I've ready every manual for every appliance I've reviewed on my channel that is new. The maitenance sections are 3-4 pages at most. Often they contained tidbits I was never aware of for that specific device that saved me a lot of headaches when discussing the product on camera. The irony is that 20, 30, 40 years ago, appliances were far more expensive than today so people actually understood proper procedures to take care of them and, magically, they lasted way longer. Was that a coincidence? Absolutely not. Put down the remote and phone, read for about 30-60min a day. Various subjects. You'd be surprised how much more you can progress in life by doing that.
You lost me when you stated LG washer/dryer was reliable. LG has a great reputation, despite terribly unreliable products, because they advertise well and pay reviewers well. Who sponsored this video again? You do get points for pointing that out. Real secret to avoid appliances breaking down: Features = complexity = unreliability.
LG laundry consistently rates as one of the most reliable WD sets on the market and I've said that many times before. There's no objective metric out there that shows other wise. Look at Yale and Consumer Reports data. Both show it to be pretty good vs. Competitors
Thanks to LG for sponsoring the video. I'm not sure how to take a manufacturer sponsoring a video, but maybe they'll see the channel and realize how important it is to have longer-lasting appliances, right?

5:42 Ride the lightning is peak metallica and every album before the Black album was amazing. But ill always have a soft spot for the Black alblum, load, and reload. Even though they are more rock than metal imo. St. Anger on is when it goes down hill for me.
On our 20 year old Jenn Air bottom freezer fridge I have replaced both the compressor and freezer fans, and the ice maker - the coating flaked off making the ice stick in the mold. I'd rather spend $100 than $2-$3 K for a new fridge.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼thank you, I will save this video❣️
6:33 funny thing, I just got the washer varient of that for free! its had barely any use so its practically new!
My house doesnt even have a breaker box to install the surge protector in. I still have to replace glass fuses and those cartridge fuses when I overload a circuit lol
So glad I sub. to this channel.
It needed two new electronic boards at a cost of $400. I scrapped it and bought another brand which is still running to this day. Maytag is no longer the superior brand it used to be.
I agree with you on St Anger. Probably one of the worst recordings of all time.
Thanks! 👍🏻
Good tips. Thanks
Never use the auto clean feature on your oven. Seems to blow the thermal fuse and lock the door every time.
Some real good zingers in this one.
I've had good luck using simple green and an old credit card to clean stove tops. The trick is to keep the crusty part wet with simple green for about 30 minutes.
Great tip!
I used to have that same lg dryer and a matching washer sadly it got damaged while we were moving. It lasted a very long 16 years.
Hi how do you get that special metal tool you used to take out the agitator? The one you had to hammer?
My microwave has been the best appliance I've ever had. 1985 Sharp Carousel 2, $450 when new, I'm so afraid of buying a new one because I'll get 6 months to 2 years out of it.
Understandable to be fearful of that
I had to get a new water heater about 10 years ago. Before I set it in place I removed the plastic bottom drain and installed a brass valve. I used to drain heaters at vacant houses & had the worst time getting some of those to work after years of mineral deposits. I run a hose from mine every 6 months to flush it.
21:57 i had an olive oil bottle tap my glass and crack it. price is insane and you have to completely reassemble the burners.
Storing Demon Hunter on vinyl above his stove. This guy is a madman. 👍
1:13 I thought Ben meant we have to empty our pockets to buy a new washer. 😅
That would of been a great idea I shoulda added, ha ha
@@bensappliancesandjunk Ben, Your the Best! Great uniformToo!
Ben, I have and in window air conditioner. It freezes up on me.can this be fix, or do I get a new one.
I also will I be able to fix it? Thanks Bettyann
Yo Benny baby!! What’s going on?
Appreciate the tips, as always.
What's your opinion on Speed Queen?
Then I saw the GE Ultrafast in you. videos
on you tube
These 220 volt / 240 volts are also from LG Top Loaders or Speed Queen.
Thanks
My GE dryer is 22 and I’ve only done a belt and some bearings. Unfortunately GE has disappointed in my 2 yo portable dishwasher
Did he say DIY a surge protector on your electrical panel? Yikes. Big fan of the channel though, thanks for the informative videos.
DIY install. There are many videos that show you how to install them
LOL I was wondering why you had Heavy Metal vinyls above your stove, until you said that line...
On GE ALL IN ONE Profile Washer/Dryer Combo, the Credit card was in the pocket and is now stuck between the 2 tubes, what is the best way to remove it?
*Thank you.*
if your water is extremely soft virtually no minerals, would you need to use vinegar to clean washer or just something like oxi clean for cleaning cycle
Caviar Moon Rocks...lol
The lights don’t come on with how to set my G E smart refrigerator
25:04 !! 😁🌹
My cord and nuts are connected to each other as well 😊
11:07 Just replace the plex duct with a new one.
Secret number one
It’s does on contain Samsung parts or design
this white LG dryer i have in my apartment JUST died on me, I can tell the either the sensor or rotor are cooked cause the motor is spinning so poorly and stalling out, has a 10year warranty and died at 12 😥
👍👍 !
HEY BEN
hey!
Samsung and LG Rocks!
Hi! LG maybe, Washer No Home board bad!
LG yeah but Samsung?
@@Ikey04-ge9gy Hi! I had a Samsung it was great!
@@pelicanwave46 Hi! I had front load! If you ask none of them like back in day, the company makes them cheap so we have to buy sooner than we should!
You forgot the most important thing - dont put towels on the handle for the stove if it has a glass front. Glass will unevenly heat and go pop.
Also I am sad you didnt demonstrate dropping heavy/metal on the stove for our learning.
Coins? Who still has coins? Our Old School Maytag Epic Front Loaders have not seen coins for years. That may be why they are still working great.
Look like Electrolux Ehe6789a-b in Vietnam 😮
Interesting!
👍👍
I just think this channel is cool t.y.
I would stay away from glass top stoves. Gas stoves are the best.
👍
CLEAN IT
In the year 2024, why do people still think they can stuff their washer and dryer with clothes and expect the appliances to still run efficiently? lol
“Read the manual”
The manual has like 50 pages about types of liquids to not submerge the microwave in.
You'd be surprised how much more you can progress in life by doing that.
clean your damn dishwasher filters you nasty ahh fellas
You lost me when you stated LG washer/dryer was reliable. LG has a great reputation, despite terribly unreliable products, because they advertise well and pay reviewers well.
Who sponsored this video again? You do get points for pointing that out.
Real secret to avoid appliances breaking down: Features = complexity = unreliability.
LG laundry consistently rates as one of the most reliable WD sets on the market and I've said that many times before. There's no objective metric out there that shows other wise. Look at Yale and Consumer Reports data. Both show it to be pretty good vs. Competitors
