I live in GA but have recently started binge watching all of your videos as we approach our first house build. Your webinars and other videos and materials are so helpful as we plan our kitchen and other household appliance purchases. I was going to ask a question about venting in an outdoor kitchen, but you said that was next up, so I'll wait and watch! Thank you for all you guys are doing!
I am an avid follower of your videos. We are in process of a kitchen renovation with appliances already ordered and so with angst I watched this video. I was so afraid of finding mistakes we might have made. Thankfully, we lucked into a good appliance dealer who after much back and forth I decided to listen to - especially, giving in on purchasing the correct size hood. Yes, we ordered too early. Thankfully, we took the route you suggested on the warranties. And now I understand why we couldn't buy directly from you. Very much appreciate this very informative video. Well done!!!
I've never encountered an appliance repair company. That would be wonderful. We are lucky to find a service tech at all, and finding one with any real expertise is impossible.

I own the GE multi as a 3rd machine (yes i own two other sets). This is so nice for loading before work and dry when home daily laundry. I bought the extended warranty, if it craps out 2 days after i'll grumble and replace it with the same thing

My wife and I just bought a new range. We live in NJ, so not near you but I've enjoyed a lot of your videos! Thank you for making them even though you are a regional appliance store. We had all options available if we wanted to run a gas hookup (fairly easy since our manifold is right below the kitchen). I knew I would not want gas without a hood and that would complicate things. Plus, we DO have an over the range microwave that we need to replace and we aren't renovating the entire kitchen, so we have to replace with in-kind. I hate our current radiative electric, so we decided to look at induction. We did not have the budget for a $3000+ induction, even if we do want one. So, we went with the LG 6336FE. It will be coming in May 6 and I'm very much looking forward to learning how to cook on it. We mostly pan fry in an AllClad 12" 5ply copper core but also do some pasta dishes, soups, and some dutch oven meals. It's hard to find good tips on cooking on induction, most of the videos are trying to explain how the magnets work and what's different about them, rather than good cooking tips. The place we bought ours from even gives away a free Analon set with purchase and I think it's because people buy one and don't understand they may have pots and pans that won't work on it. I think they give away the set with it so customers have a set to fall back on if their current sets don't work. I can't imagine anyone who doesn't do enough research to understand what will and won't work on their new technology ranges/cooktops!
For our DW, we went with Bosch 300 series. It sounds like we did not fall into the mistake you mentioned about paying more for quieter DW. Most of what I read said that the 300, 500, and 800 are built mostly the same but that they have more bells & whistles as you go up. So, the price on the 300 so we could spend more on the range was what we decided on.
We did not have to replace our Whirlpool fridge that is 10 years old and still working like a champ.

I appreciate this information. I own a speed queen washer and dryer, so I’m good as far as washers and dryers are concerned. I have a Kitchen Aid refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher… seems like I better start learning how to repair them lol

I love your videos and simply because of your videos I went from wanting Cafe Appliances to doing a full Sub-Zero/Wolf kitchen.
I can tell you that in Germany (where we are) - new building codes require certain levels of energy efficiency on the house which makes exhaust-to-the-outside hood vents basically impossible (due to the requirement to re-heat the air these suck out - it blows out the recommended energy usage calculations via your Energy Advisor (required by law now to monitor and regulate new homes efficiency) and you don't get your building permit).
The alternative is a more passive vent to be installed in the kitchen that recirculates the air in and out of the kitchen constantly but at much lower speeds and due to the lower speeds is able to retain most of the heat.
Might be something to look into.

You need one in every “liveable room” so bedrooms + living + kitchen + office, etc etc.
It’s nothing crazy - but it runs 24/7 so you are constantly swapping out the air in and out while retaining most of the heat.
With such a system you could in theory utilise a downdraft or similar appliance and the carcinogens remain in the room for a limited period of time before getting filtered out.
It’s new here so it’ll be in the US in 5 years. Something to look forward to I guess.

I love my GE profile heat pump washer/dryer, I got it as soon as it became available.
I think the all in one washer is not an efficient product. You can only ever get one load done at time. If you have a family, laundry would be all day! Typically you get a load in the washer and have something drying and so on.

I’m going to be replacing some aging appliances and possibly even doing a full kitchen remodel in the next year. First, I want to say thank you for doing these videos, I have learned a ton and have become more aware of the existence of local private appliance dealers. That being said, I now have more questions brought on by the info already shared. In my area, not a single appliance store had in-house repair, they all just call a repair company and their warranties are third party if they even offer them. In a situation like mines, is online ordering a better way to go since I’m not really getting any store support after the buy anyway? Or is there some other quality that I should ask about?
Look for service companies in your area....Online companies are a disaster.
Agree with Steve, online ordering of appliances can be a disaster! Recently I ordered a stove on line from Appliances Connection, they filled Chapter 7 (dissolution) bankruptcy, I had opted for the partnered lender for the 0% financing. Long story short, I never received the stove, shipper told me that they would not ship, and lender is pursuing me for the entire purchase price. I disputed the charge in writing under the terms of the lender’s agreement, but what a pain! I should’ve bought locally.
I had six kids. I love the extra large washers, and I'd love an even larger one. Try washing a thick comforer in a regular size washer. Rarely do it? Between several dogs, cats, and kids, ours are washed regularly.
OK...you are paying $1000 for .7-1.2 cubic feet...The average size should be able to wash a comforter
You really only need 4.5 - 5 cubic feet to wash a Queen or king size comforter. He’s talking about washers that are bigger than that.
In a home with 3+ kids, I'm looking for two washers and dryers in the laundry room if you have the space and a way to feed the water, gas, or power. As an engineer it's the most obvious solution to the capacity problem, but most people just can't imagine doing this.

First, thank you for your video it was very informative. I am a senior/over the hill self proclaimed chief and considering my final and last remodel in my new home. My go to appliances from past experience have been Wolf and Viking and in no order. Cooking is what I love to do and I don't want to fall short when it comes to my appliances but as I'm soon to retire I don't want to over spend. I am leaning with Viking and was wondering if you could explain why you did not refer to it in your RUclips. Thank you
We were one of the first Viking dealers in the country, but they lost their way and stopped improving the company. We stopped selling Viking about 10 years ago.
The new owner, Middleby, might be able to turn Viking around. We will see.

I've been advised that a range hood "protects your house". I bought a properly-sized ZLine curved hood. I lo❤e it.
Do you know why Whirlpool hasn't come out with any new design refrigerators since maybe 3 or 4 years? They are offering the same SxS and French Doors for the longest time, while it seems like the other manufacturers are always changing at least the looks of their machines. For example, LG has a refrigerator with three ice makers!
Do you have an opinion on buying a 134a unit from Whirlpool over an R600 from Frigidaire? That is the only benefit of buying an older WP, that it is still using 134a. Also, the former brings up cold air for the ice maker, while the latter has its own evaporator in the ice room. I wonder if that would be problematic over the long term.
I appreciate some of the topics that you hinted on. The service provided by the 3rd party warranty companies is hit or miss. You could get a highly qualified tech, or one that started just yesterday. And the TPWs do some very borderline unethical declining of legitimate service requests. Moreover, some manufacturers have extensive service programs (GE, Frigidaire, LG), while others like Samsung are very weak in that area, and others have zero support in the USA. In other words, I wouldn't be rushing out to buy a Blomberg dishwasher anytime soon.
A thing I learned decades ago is to not rely upon published oven sizes for making your final selection. The best thing to do is to get the largest pot or pan you will be using in the oven and take it to the store to test its fit. You also want to think of pan sizes when you will be using multiple racks in the oven. While the oven dimensions might appear to be large enough rack arrangements and styles can result in a considerable loss of usable space. I also apply this to dishwashers as not all will fit that Thanksgiving serving platter or charger size plates.

If I were putting in a new kitchen, I'd be slow to embrace fads. Innovation is good, but I'd hesitate to install a new-technology appliance until it established a track record. Also, I would work with a local dealer that serviced what they sell and had a good reputation for doing so. Regarding overall design of a kitchen, I'd ignore the pretty pictures and have it laid out to function efficiently.
Really interested in your views, especially on undercounted induction-does it work, and what happens when it breaks? Also, can you vent a range out a window, or through a wall?
Induction cooktops are reliable because they are protected by glass....However, you need a good service agent to fix induction. Venting through a window? You need a vent plus that window will be pretty greasy
I must agree with you regarding European exhausts. They're low-powered and pricey. Here in Australia, we mainly get European and Asian models, and the Asian exhausts perform much better. Two most popular brands are Robam and Fotile.
One caveat: Asians don't care about decibels. Those exhausts are LOUD.

Please update on 36, 48-inch induction ranges, especially those with color. Love the italian look ranges but want quality.

I have a 30” GE Cafe induction range with a microwave overhead. I am wanting to put in a vent and get rid of the microwave. Can you please suggest what type of vent I should get? I told my husband I wanted one that would make my hair stand straight on top of my head! I love to cook and bake. I won’t even try to steak or anything else that has to be seared on high because of the smoke point. I really don’t know where to begin. This will be vented through the roof. Thank you for all the important information you so freely give!

Great input. Unfortunately, in Washington state for new builds, we are almost forced into ventless dryers, so I will be going with one of the new an all in one combos and hoping for the best. They are also trying to eliminate gas appliances, but with power outages and my cooking needs, I am sticking with a gas range and again hoping for the best .
You can get a separate condenser or heat pump dryer. Ventless doesn’t have to all in one

The biggest reason for the popularity of extra large washers is the popularity of king size beds/bedding. If you don’t want to have to go to a laundromat to wash a king size duvet you need an extra large washer/dryer even if you don’t have ANY kids. I have to assume you’ve never done laundry.
My daughter and I do tons of laundry....Rememeber "Extra Large" is .6-1.5 cubic feet. , yet costs $1000 more. Bedding fits well at 4.5 cubic.

We bought all GE Monogram appliances for a new build back in 2015.
Have had nothing but problems with the built in doubl oven so we finally replaced it with a GE Profile high tech oven that hooks up to your phone and you have to swipe to start it. I wanted the GE Profile that had the buttons. Hubs bought a 5 year warranty on it.
The built in refrigerator ice maker is a nightmare!! It has never worked. Lights have been out for a year. Too much money to fix until we have to. The computer module.🙄
Next house. No ice maker in the refrigerator. Buy one of those ice makers that you can put u/c. Any suggestions for that appliance? And we want a freestanding refrigerator. No built in!
Also, wall ovens or slide in cooktop/oven?
We had all GE Profile appliances in our last house in 2010. No problems but only lived there 5 years.

Extra large washers are necessary for washing king size duvets, and handy if you batch several changes of sheets. Gas ovens I've owned didn't self-clean; no self-cleaning is the pits.
My moms washer was 2.5 cubic. The least amount of capacity on a front load is 4.5 cubic. You will be paying $1000-1500 for .9-1.5 cubic...

Very informative video for sure. Ive been repairing appliances sinse 1981, way too long but why are we all of the sudden so worried about ventilation? Nobody is getting sick from cooking so why the big push for change? We aren't any more knowledgeable then we were 40 years ago about safe ventilation so to me it just feels like more intrusion. Maybe you will change my mind. Thanks
Point taken...But we are cooking on stoves way more powerful than our folks in more energy efficient homes keeping it all inside.....
Because modern building codes requires homes to be much better sealed that the past.
My recommendation...is to Crack a window every day when nice.. I am 71 have seen alot cooked on everything imaginable. Mostly without a vent fan ..not that it is great to do if you have a choice. But many of us lived aok ..

Once you have a raised Dishwasher, you'll never return to below-the-counter DW 😊
Open a window. Don’t fry with oil on front burner. Use an induction range. Problems solved.
Energy efficiency needs to be considered. The future is electric.
Gas is better for cooking, electric for baking, oven use.
Gas is actually very energy efficient. You get excellent heat therms, per joule of energy. The 2023 modern hyper focus on electricity being the only energy source allowed in homes is a campaign. Well produced campaign. Those in democrats led states are passing laws blocking consumer access to gas appliances, blocking new construction with gas as energy source. People will die in STORMS as a result in places that normal winter, 4 season of weather. Good luck to our next generation who are being brainwashed in schools as we speak. The campaign knows get kids in school, easier to get their buy in. They don't know any different.
OK.... So, what does one do when there is absolutely NO viable way to vent through a hood? Do nothing???

Pro range tops or designer ranges are a complete waste of money… unless you’re a pro chef that understands what they are getting. People don’t realize that most of those units want work to there full potential without regular calibration and typically want work at max BTU with standard gas lines. Due to this in most cases these ranges cook worse than a $600 range from a big box store.
Climate change is making weather events more extreme. Hurricanes are more frequent and more dangerous causing more damage.
Insurance companies are raising rates or even pulling completely out of the market. Water levels are rising every year making low lying areas and coastal properties a bigger risk to insure. Even condos are feeling the pinch. Rising insurance rates and repairs are getting passed on in HOA fees.
There will be a time in the future when people will have to self insure and risk the loss of everything. Only the rich that can afford to pay cash and take the risk will be able to buy coastal properties. Banks will not make a 30 year loan on a property that may be destroyed by a hurricane or will be under water in 20 years. Banks will not give a loan on uninsured properties. Every decision you make will have an impact on the climate. What you eat, how you prepare it. How you heat and cool your home.
Climate Change is a LIE. Only theorical data supports it...NOT the REAL data.
Good grief! In the 30s through the 60s people didn't build next to the ocean and then dumped concrete block mainly. Now no holds bared building next to water equal destruction.
Every decision about how you cook is not going to make an impact ..governments of the world having wars and destruction huge impact .. we Are just pawns .don't believe everything you read or hear.
