  • I’m going to talk about when bad things happen to good people (a la Rabbi Harold S. Kushner) or in my world, when years of living a healthy lifestyle still leads to a diagnosis of cancer. My question today is why do fit, healthy women like myself get diagnosed with ovarian cancer and how can we use information on these women to inform research and compel people to action.
I will provide some background on my own story and ovarian cancer in general, and I will share my observations of the ovarian cancer survivors I have met. Then I will outline my “eureka” idea to draw attention to the under-studied cohort of fit women diagnosed with stage 1 or stage 2 ovarian cancer. Meg Wilkinson is the Invasive Species Database Coordinator for the New York Natural Heritage Program. In 2014, at the age of 54, being an active, healthy woman, she was diagnosed with stage 2 ovarian cancer; she completed surgery and chemo, and has a good prognosis. Meg is committed to making a difference in the ovarian cancer world. Meg grew up in Nyack, NY and has lived in Rexford, NY since 2000 where she and her husband, Tony, raised their son, Tristan, who is now in graduate school studying Physics. Meg enjoys biking, skiing, Tai Chi, and yoga. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I had the same exact type of ovarian cancer (germ cell) as gymnast Shannon Miller. I was 31. Very fit, non smoker, no cancer history, no family history for ovarian cancer. I was very very lucky and the doctor felt a mass in my abdomen during annual pap exam. Initially they thought it was a large cyst. After surgery to remove the cyst, biopsy came back malignant. It was such a shock. Luckily it was stage 1A but grade 2 so I still had to go through chemo.

Meg it was an honor to meet and talk to you this past weekend at the NOCC conference. Your TEDx is so needed and I pray more people can see this. I will complete the survey and pass it onto friends and loved ones. I stand in agreement with you and pray we can find the missing link to this puzzle that can help develop a screening test, more accurate diagnosis and eventually a cure. Much love. Serena W.

I had ectopic pregnancy last year surgery of the fallopian was performed and found out that it has serous carcinoma. This year my lymphnodes on left clavicle swell and I was diagnosed with metastatic uterine cancer.

Many people know the answers to this. They’re called “conspiracy theorists.”

Smells like the pill is the problem. Or the mothers of the women's genetics or habits .

Goldena Medina I’ve known 3 woman with ovarian cancer and none of them had been on the pill! So no, the pill is not the culprit.

@@skyeblu1722 This doesn't mean anything. Some people know 3 women who were on the pill and got it. Some know 3 women who didnt. It's scientifically infignificant and misleading.

The pill - at least 1st generation actually provided some significant protection against OC, (as does childbirth and breastfeeding). BRCA gene plays a part in some - about a sixth.
