Lemme give you a leak. You might think the m1 imac will have the same performance as the other m1 macs. Some may expect a small difference in speed. But no there will be a big difference. There is a reason why apple's new power brick for the m1 imac is high powered. Remember that power to performance graph that apple gave when they first introduced the m1? The macbooks and mac mini has a limit on the power they use. But the imac is allowed to use much more power and hence they will be way more fast.

I already purchased the M1 mini as an upgrade to a 2015 iMac 27". After buying the peripherals already the cost of the iMac right now does not make sense. However, the M1 mini does give me a cheap and up to date machine that will hold me through to the end of 2022. I'll look at the improvements but unless you are blazing out video, I am happy to keep with the mini and watch the development and marketing war that is developing for another 18 months for the low cost of the most inexpensive Mac M1.

What you've described is the $1699 model, they've already done that for you, that IS the $1499 one but with 512gb storage! So you don't need to upgrade a $1499 one. Or am I missing something?!

With the good monitor... and how I use computers.. I’m hoping for a M1x/M2 option in July when I’m ready... then keep it as a main computer for a few years. As a semi- power user. (3d animation, blackmagic BRAW editing-grading) I want the most power as possible.. however... if thinking light duty.. the $1,499 version looks good. The screen is the selling point over the mini.. Luckily for me I’m working too much at day job to have time to work on my side video editing, so by the time I’m ready to buy in July.. hopefully the M2 will be out in some form.. even a new 16” MBP. Currently running a 2014 15” MBP... so I’m past due for an upgrade..... The selling point to me to the Mac mini is... cheap entry level... and add the up to 16g memory.. use the 4K Dell Ultrasharp monitor and I have a ton of keyboards and mice around... use it for a while and December 2021 or spring 2022 a M2 or Mac Pro Mini for heavy lifting. Then your current Mac Mini that you bought the 16g 256/512 version becomes your home entertinnment hub, music creation... or anything else computer... even one of those new apps that lets your run many windows programs without needing boot camp or even windows installed...

I think most students and office personnel would do fine with the 2 port option and a hub. Having more front-facing ports on the desk is far more convenient than spilling coffee while leaning over to fumble with ports on the back of the comp. and neither group would benefit much from that extra GPU core so I’d say grab the base model, grab a hub, and store most of your files externally.

Awesome info. If you’re like me and resell or trade-in for the newest models, think twice getting the iMac 24”. For me, I would wait for the next iMac with a larger screen size. Like all 21” iMac the resell value is far less then the iMac 27”. True for the 24”. As soon as Apple releases the next M1 iMac with a larger screen, the 24” will lose its value for resell or trade. Whereby, if purchasing an iMac, wait for the next iMac with a larger screen and time comes to sell or trade it in, you’re set not losing profit or value for that trade. Otherwise, save yourselves money and get the M1 Mac Mini as The Everyday Dad stated.

Hi, Gary. I'm a new subscriber who enjoys all your videos, but I just want to come in and defend the iMacs a bit. I totally agree that the Mac minis have great value, but **only if** you don't care about the screen or really want non-Apple peripherals.
If you want to buy a 4k or 5k retina screen to match the iMac, the cost comes to about the same or even more depending on what you get. Apple screens are just... perfect in terms of brightness, color tuning, and PPI. I've yet to see a monitor that can match it that isn't prohibitively expensive. Most of these 4k monitors are really attuned for gaming, but for sheer value for money, I'd advocate for an Apple screen any day of the week. For graphic design and photography purposes, I cannot recommend anything except for a native Mac screen. Plus, for some people it's simply convenient to have all the peripherals come with.
But if that's not an issue or refresh rate is more important than color acuity, the Mac mini is great.

One use case that very few tech reviewers talk about (because, why would anyone, it's hardly common -- and it's _definitely_ not exciting) is professional writers. Bloggers, novelists, et cetera, we writers need a solid machine. Now, an iPad -- even the 2020 iPad Air -- has more than enough horsepower to get that job done.
Thing is, some of us still want apps that are more robust on macOS than they are on iPadOS -- and some apps that don't exist _at all_ on iPadOS (yet). Looking here at Path Finder from Cocoatech, DevonThink Pro, Scrivener 3, Vellum, and Amazon Kindle Creator.
For writers, an M1 Mac Mini might seem like _the_ solution. Except that, with its dodgy reputation for waking (or not waking) a display connected to it consistently and reliably, and that well known bluetooth reliability issue, folks could be forgiven for wanting something that dodges those issues. Provided you bring external storage into play, and keep expectations for what you can do with 8Gb of UMA... well, realistic... the M1 iMac just _might_ be the perfect desktop for a professional writer.

Well that's because products imported from other countries get unreasonably high import taxes if a certain percentage of the manufacturing is not done on India. This is to promote production of goods in India and provide jobs. Not Apple's fault, but they are starting to manufacture some products in India like the iPhones but still the prices are not same as in US for all of their lineup.
Samsung has already started manufacturing in India and their prices are the same as in other countries.

It is 8 years old and works good. If I purchase a new computer and it's an iMac, I think I would get 16GB of RAM just for future proofing. I also would like 512GB storage because I have run out of room with a 256GB HDD. It's too early to speculate about upgrades just as two weeks ago was too early to speculate about new iMacs.
The base model iMac is ideal for those who say the base MacBook Air is plenty of computer for most people.
If you really think you need more than two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports you're probably trying too hard.
I'm betting you could get an OWC Thunderbolt hub and external SSD for less that upgrading the internal SSD through Apple, and still gat the same kind of access speed as you would get with an internal SSD.
Upgrading from the base model is only adding bells and whistles these days.
I'm going for the Mac mini as the low cost intro to the M1, but that flashy display is awfully tempting. And I would like a purple one.

I don’t think recommending people (especially students, who probably have less cash to spare) to go with 1TB internal storage is the best idea. Apple’s prices for internal storage are so much higher than buying external, so that’s a much better option. You could keep current projects on internal storage and use external for archiving older stuff.

I was sticker shocked when I saw the pricing for the specked out iMac with 16 RAM/2 TB at $2,600 via a Mac Rumors news story. Until now, the 27-inch has been my go-to for 11 years. I may be priced out of that market, and it really makes me sad. Still, glad you shared your thoughts. BTW, my wife is/was a Six Sigma Project Manager. Is that what you do too? Thanks! Wayne

I think Apple didn't give us the 27'' M1 iMac because they know thats the model we are all waiting for, so the best money move to make is selling this 24'' model so everyone buys it until the 27'' is available, so, more double money for them.

The company probably also needs time to figure out how it’s going to move forward with the CPU and especially the GPU. The simplest thing they could do for a 27’ iMac is just double the cores of the current M1 (M1X). That would create a very powerful CPU, but the machine would have a larger thermal footprint and the GPU performance may still lag behind. They could also just wait until the move to a 3NM process next year (true M2). There are a lot more variables though and I’m no expert so who knows lol

iMac 24” is 10 lbs! I’m getting one to bring to DJ gigs! Best portable display atm
Edit: Not really cuz I'm broke, but I do happen to know this topic.
If you are a DJ like me, you have the means to easily transport your iMac to where you'll be playing or it will live there, and you want to know what to buy, I have enough thoughts on that to make a video on my own.
First of all, however, let me say that digital DJing by itself does not require much. You can DJ on an iPad Air with an A7 and 1 gigabyte of RAM, or even on older iPads than that. DJing on my 2017 iPad Pro with an A10X and 4 GB RAM is perfectly acceptable. But the reason I'd bring an iMac isn't just for the bigger display. I'd bring an iMac to do more complex things at the same time while I DJ. I'm talking about lights, immersive visuals to a projector, audio and video recording, and the capability to handle all of the above simultaneously plus whatever I can think to throw at the machine in the future, and for that, you want the 16 GB model of iMac with as much storage as you can afford or double what you think you need for your entire offline library of music, audio samples, video content, audio and video recordings, whatever else you do with your computer, and 20% of your SSD free for swap, whichever is less. Remember: you can always plug in a flash drive or external SSD to iMac if you must, but it's bad for aesthetics and it will be slower than local storage and hanging a drive off your Mac adds complexity and points of failure, so you should not consider it equal to internal storage. Also, skip the base model and go for Touch ID. Being able to quickly lock and unlock your Mac during a gig if you have to step away is worth the premium on its own, as is the ethernet port. The extra USB-C ports on the back are also of value. The 8th GPU core makes no real difference.
The most important upgrade is the $1499 model with Touch ID, ethernet, etc.
    Then RAM.
    Then storage.
And get double the storage you think you need. I think I need 300 GB, so I'd get 1 TB.

For most people, I feel like an m1 MacBook would make a lot more sense than this considering that they are just as powerful. I would much rather get a MacBook Air and a 4k monitor for my desk. Although I spend a lot of time at home because of online classes, I either just use my m1 MacBook Pro or plug it into my 4k monitor if I want to work on photo editing. The amount of extra flexibility the laptops give you with nearly the same performance makes them a way better value for me.

For me, I never use ethernet. Ever. Unless the router and the device are so close I may as well. With my PS4 this is the case, and the PS4's WiFi was just so slow. With my PC, MacBook Pro, PS5, smart TV, Xbox 360 and printers, no ethernet cable in sight. They are also too far away, but the WiFi is fast on all of them and pretty reliable, but being WiFi there are times when it's not. Also the PS5 and the new iMacs have 802.11ax WiFi 6 which gives speeds in touching distance to ethernet. My 802.11ac MacBook and PC do too.
In terms of USB, other than the things my PC needs to run (so keyboard, mouse, bluetooth, Xbox controller adaptors) I don't use the USB ports. On my MacBook, at most I normally only use one port at a time if I even use the ports at all. The SD card slot almost never gets used. I use my own internal space with iCloud.
The M1 iMac has me interested in buying a new Mac. One of my MacBook's original duties was video editing

#1 Mistake to avoid is being an early adopter. Apple is not going to make it more expensive over the next few months just because it sells well. You should always wait a bit after it is released, read actual reviews from real people and watch hands-on tests before buying. The new mac looks nice and promises a lot of nice things. But never hurry.
One of the biggest red flags for a scam is urgency and if you urge yourself to buy this before you actually know what it is then you are just scamming yourself.

My guess is Apple is gearing those towards the pro market with an improved M processor. So if you can wait 6 months I would if you really need more than 16gb or RAM or more CPU or GPU cores. The M1 macs are crazy fast so if you feel confident then I would get it now 🤷🏼‍♀️. If your current mac works well now, then I would wait. If an M1 would improve your work, then go for it.
