- Former Thai opposition leader Pita Limjaroenrat speaks to DW about Thailand’s future and his hopes to still some day become prime minister.
Pita led the reformist Move Forward party to winning the most seats in last year’s elections, only to be blocked from becoming prime minister. The party was also shut out of the governing coalition. Pita subsequently resigned as leader and was briefly suspended from parliament.
Now Move Forward is threatened by a potential dissolution order from Thailand’s Constitutional Court next month, after judges said its policies to reform laws on defaming the royal family were unconstitutional.
Thailand has notoriously strict lèse majesté laws. Hundreds of activists have been imprisoned in recent years for breaching them.
28-year-old royal reform activist Netiporn “Bung” Sanesangkhom was jailed in January on charges of defaming the royal family, after conducting public opinion polls on Thai royal family motorcades.
Netiporn died in prison on Tuesday after going on hunger strike for over a hundred days, as part of a protest against the government's treatment of political prisoners. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has ordered an investigation into her death.

Thank you for upholding the ideology and sticking to the principle as an MP and acknowledging the rights that these young people were denial in the Thai Justice system. We will continue to upkeep this spirit and keep our support. Your time will come khun Pita, you had our support then, keep up the political integrity and you will always have our support.
I cannot help but be impressed by the grace and integrity with which this man conducts himself in the face of the clearly undemocratic forces that oppose him. It takes so much courage and conviction to walk the path that he has chosen. For Thailand's sake I hope that he will ultimately prevail.

The moderator asked good questions, but sometimes was a bit unfriendly and pushy. Pita as always gives good and smart answers.

I feel that the questions thrown at Pita by the host is not at all unfriendly. On the other hands, it just shows his deep understanding of thai political situations and backgrounds.

Not me coz to me he is the embodiment of a con-artist and Dr. Spin. If you take your time carefully analyze all the words he said and compare them to the facts and related events. It's only those narrow minded youngsters who craze about any good looking young Thai men who graduated from US, UK or the rest of the 5-eye nations and who can speak English fluently. The youngsters who often prefer calling themselves as the new generation are mostly crazy about Western stars & values while feeling no pride in traditional Thai cultures.
Based on the total number of voters who casted their votes last election, the guy & his party did not win 50% or the majority of the votes. It indicated that he did not meet the qualifications being the leader of our nation. Most of us are not proud of him because of his habitual lies, deceptive & tricky behaviors, hypocrisy, and history of abusing his ex-wife.

I like the question that if he’s over promised about the policy relating Les-Majesty law. I live in abroad, first time I heard about this policy, honestly I was stunned! No one has ever touched this subject before, I’m talking about over hundreds years! More surprisingly, majority of Thai people are actively fighting for it now! In my opinion, it’s because we all know that there is something wrong about it. It’s concerning the human rights that Thai people never get treated equally in the society. And I believe he will win the election again next time.

What he said here and in his past interviews/comments in Thai or English are all twisted facts, half-truths and even very remotely far from the real occurrence. His brain, thoughts and words spoken publicly everywhere in/outside Thailand clearly show that divisiveness in ingrained in brain. The guy is so cunningly tricky and deceptive with habitual lies and fond of making up stories based on his off-balance view or imagination to gain the support based on his divided and conquer plan with excessive thirst for limelight and power wanting to be the leader of Thailand and ASEAN. Any divisive figure will never win the heart and mind of the majority of population to become the PM. In the democratically advanced nations, any politicians who exhibit habit behaviors of lying, fact distortion, smearing others, divisive speeches and deeds, refusing to give others the due credit and respect, exaggeration, hypocrisy, etc., will never be accepted by the general public as their leader!
@@petetpk3436 Respect your opinion. But I don’t see any imagination in his speeches or lies. There’re always 2 sides of the story depending on what side you choose to believe. Thailand has been divided for decades and it’s not by him, obviously. And if he only wants to be the PM or hungry for power, there’re many ways to achieve and there are plenty of examples on what politicians can trick. Moving Forward party had campaigned 300 policies, that I totally agree with most of them. The fact that he’s still feeling okay for not having any title in the parliament is because he’s not working alone, he’s working as a team player with integrity. With or without him, it doesn’t matter because I personally support the idea of their policies. Now it’s their job to prove that they are for real or imaginary.
You got it wrong. Don't know how could U got your info that majority of Thais are fighting it?? I am in Thailand & haven't seen any sizable Thai came out joining these radical youngsters on the streets at any spots where protests were held during the past 10 yrs, even when Pita was present. When U talked about a few hundred yrs back, there's no way for U to have the proof coz U R still relatively young - probably same age range as your idol, Pita. I dare say that the overwhelming majority of habitants (including Chinese, Indians, Laosians, Vietnamese, etc) in Thailand/Siam who lived under the absolute monarchy system of gov't did not have any problems but were greatly grateful to be able to live peacefully in the land protected & overseen by the kings. All most all Thais (even Westerners) who saw/knew what King Rama 9th had done throughout his reign have nothing but total respect & love for him. It's in recent yrs & some of the youngsters that got duped to hate the Royal institution & to outwardly show disrespect to the monarchy.
BTW, when did U move overseas? How long did U live in Thailand? When did U last set your feet on my motherland? How did U get your info about Thailand's political events, socioecomic conditions?

Thailand actually are more open-minded & progressive than any Western countries including US. We've treated gays & lesbians way better than anyone. We have never beaten up or mistreatet our neighbors, friends, relatives, and strangers of all ages who are not male or female. A great numbers of gays & lesbians are very successdul, famous & visible in the society. They even have enjoyed the respect from normal folks everywhere in the kingdom. They don't have to hide feeling ashame or fear of their status. The annual LGBT celebration in Bangkok is more lively event than many cities in US & lasts days, weeks.
Pita is my only prime minister from the 2023 election.
His party was betrayed by Pheu Thai party. the lead government coalition.
The majority of Thai people vited for him. We love him.
I don't know if you fail mathematics to consider that 30% of the parliamentary seats is a majority.

The original commentator here is typical youngsters with shallow brain who can easily be brain-washed & blinded by Pita's good look, ability to speak English fluently (but not good enough compared to the governor of Thailand Central Bank, or Mr. Abhisit), and deceitful words.

People in the world should not be mean or heartless with others , they should be kind and helpful to one another. Our world will be full of happiness and real peace if we, humans love one another.
I totally agree with you & like your comment which came from a good hearted person. But unfortunately, in the real world, evil politicians and capitalists will always look for opportunities to exploit others and use others for their own interests/gains. This is the case with Bung. She was exploited by the politicians & being used as a tool or means toward their political goals (which is to relentlessly stir up troubles for the sitting gov't to speed up their downfall). The late activist received fundings in return. Sadly, during the over 100 days in detention and on hunger strike, the politicians who used to publicly protect her failed to talk to her convincing her to live instead of torturing herself to death. Now these politicians came out expressing sorrow for the loss and attending her funeral; what good will this be? Her life does not mean anything to them at all.
