  • In my latest railfan adventure I focus on drone footage of trains moving down the CSX Big Sandy Subdivision. So I get out my DJI Mini3 Pro and shoot Coal, freight, and grain trains in this one, with the mountains of eastern Kentucky as the setting. The former C&O business unit is alive and well in 2023.

Great video! What are the current rules with flying the drone on the railroad? I assume you have to stay x feet away from the tracks, how far and high would that be? Also how far should I keep if I am wanting to record a CSX depot from the sky? Any other rules you know please let me know. Thanks!

It all depends on the size drone you are flying. I try not to fly directly over the trains, unless I’m just crossing from one side of the tracks to the other. Drones are subject to FAA regulations for aircraft and not subject to any railroad regulation.
As a personal rule I only video equipment and never railroad employees, unless that employee has told me they don’t mind being filmed.

@@eastkentuckyrailfan I use a 249g DJI Mini 3. Do you think I should keep about 50 feet away from the tracks? I don’t want any trouble with the FAA.
