Congrads for finally getting the LR Defender, hope this does not break. Being a Disco 3, 4, and 5 owner, I assure you that LR’s terrain resoonse modes are mostly a gimmic that is hard to understand that even it works or not - EXCEPT FOR ONE: the “auto mode” that comes with Terrain Response 2 is unbelivably good and saves you at almost all the loose terrain situations. It has recovered the vehicle by itself in a number of deep snow, deep mud and soft sand stuck positions. Will not help when there is clearance issues (if vehicle is terribly grounded), but it will help greatly in others. Tried at least 30 times. Auoto mode is great.
I'd agree here. People get really obsessed about lockers bc they haven't actually driven these. If you're obsessed about lockers you're arguing about the wrong car (i.e. it's not a rock buggy)
I got a new 4 runner this year. Took it down quite a few trails already. Trails I used to take my k5 blazer and think (lockers would be nice) but never "needed" the lockers. Still have not used the locker. Lol. I have used the terrain select and A-track. But even then, I didn't need it. I used them because I had them. Lol. I used to have a rock crawler that was locked. It was a dedicated rig that got trailered everywhere. Lockers are nice to have "just in case" but I still am having a hard time seeing a situation I will need it. But damn glad I have it.
How long does it take the defender to defrost and warm up in the morning (windows frozen solid) no use of de ice spray or ice scraper, all windows cleared and vision unimpeded by interior misted (frozen) windows . Compared to your wrangler window heater review of a couple of weeks ago?
I don't know much about the jeep but my guess is that if both cars are bone stock then the defender will destroy the jeep in most if not all circumstances, however you could probably buy some really good mods for the jeep and still not come close to the defenders price in which case the jeep would probably win,

Hi guys! Quick question, couldn’t find info about it anywhere. Is it true only 18inch or higher rims can be installed on the new defender ? And what’s the max tyre size that can be installed ? Thank you !!
I think to know how good the new Defender is in the snow you have got to have snow tyres fitted. Why not grab some snow tyres on some steels as a separate set? That would give you some testing out for this seasons video posts!
@@pl2514 if you can find someone that manufactures 20 inch steel rims to suit this application then I guess you can, but that doesnt solve the lack of sidewall issue
@@peopleschamp7258 I had no idea it was the rear calipers that caused the clearance issue, normally its the larger front discs and calipers that determine what size wheels you can use on a car. It's a beautiful vehicle. The fulltime 4WD system in the Defender sounds a lot like the Jeep Quadra Trac2 system found in the Grand Cherokee. It has a fulltime 4WD with a 2 speed transfer case. When in HI the default is open center dif. In Lo the center diff is locked. My Grand Cherokee has never disappointed me in the snow (yet). And the Goodyear Adventure AT with Kevlar is also what you get on the Grand Cherokee if you choose the off-road package. The tires are okay in snow. I have never had a problem getting moving. Handling is good too as long as you don't overdo it. Braking is where I'm not happy. I don't think they stop the vehicle well. My Suburban was bigger and heavier. I had General all-terrains on it and I liked those tires much better in the snow. I think if snow tires are not a practical option, people should really try to get all-seasons or all-terrains with the three peak mountain snowflake symbol.
TFL - could you test whether the defender can raise to the highest setting WHILE cross axled. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk can only raise from Normal to OR1, It will not raise to OR2 while cross axled. I always thought that would be helpful if I got into trouble until I tested it with mechanics ramps. Thanks.
Definitely agree, would have preferred to see the base model with a base engine. Kind of weird too I detect a little bit of friction between Tommy and Dad. Tommy definitely seems a bit frustrated and definitely disappointed, They talked about this in that last video a bit. By the time winter comes and is gone and they do any off-road stuff it'll probably be too late to be fresh and interesting.
I just returned one to JLR Belgium after a week of testing. When they get stuck, they get very stuck. The one I had was on crossover Continentals. The clay/mud didn't care for them at all. All 4 wheels turning in low range and with centre lock. I'd have got it out old Defender style but these are expensive so wasn't going to start slamming logs under it. Luckily a gentle tug from a New Holland and we were out :) Loved every second of the 100. What a machine.
They did not pay 70K. They were given this rig for 55K. That was the dealers compromise to get them a rig instead of holding out for what they ordered.
I agree and I know they got it for the same price point as the original one they bought, but for that price it should come with some beadlocks and off-road tires IMO. I’d rather get a raptor and upgrade some other things with the change.
@@jesseb280 bead locks? That’s not the market LR are aiming at. You only need bead locks for serious off-road and these vehicles are not going to see anything that need bead locks. LR have abandoned their off road heritage and gone straight for the SUV market.
Heavy and/or chains only works if you're in very low levels of snow and have a solid surface under you. Something like they were doing here, sure. In actual off-road conditions the only way to go is maximum floatation and stay on top, so lighter is always better as well as the largest tire at the lowest pressure possible. Once the snow is deeper than the underside of the truck your only option is to stay on top or you'll just high center and go nowhere. Chains just 'dig', so again, only good in very shallow snow.
FYI, in "snow mode" the vehicle starts in 2nd gear, to compensate for low traction. It also modulated throttle input and ABS breaks. When "Terrain Response" is OFF, i.e. normal drive, the centre diff will NOT lock, no matter how hard you try. Only in special programs will it engage. Watch the centre console to confirm it's activity, If you get high centered, you can go in "super extended" mode, by holding the UP suspension button for a few seconds. That will raise the vehicle a bit more.
SVR Defender seems like an oxymoron. Why not just buy a sports car if you want high speed handling? Defender is just not about that nor should it be. Why in the world anybody wants to try and turn a top heavy overbuilt truck into a tight handling speed wagon is beyond me.

Glad you guys finally got a working Defender. It is plush and maybe out of the price range of many of us. However the whole experience makes good videos. Keep them coming! You guys are living the dream! Sooo many toys!

So, where is the " how good is it in the snow Part". All I see is 2 dudes out on flat surface and compacted snow that any car could drive on. What about steep gradients snow and ice etc. Then we can see what it can do.
Snow is forecast for next weekend.

I drove one last night and can say the only disappointment is the small cargo space in the back. Other than the small cargo capacity it drives amazing, is really comfortable, the motor has a great sound to it and it hauls!
Truly amazed
It actually made it more than a mile.
Good job Land Rover
Dude we're cookimg with fire now bud..get on board son!
Auoto mode is great.
i WiSh It HaD a R eAR l0cKiNg DifF
smh 95% of people will not even need it - not even on the trails. The terrain response will help compensate.
But that one time you need it might be priceless.
Wow! A defender can drive down a compacted snow road!
TFL Classics,Offroad, etc: buy a 95-ish defender, fix it up a little and do a bunch of tests against the new 1..
Now that would be a great series.
Not only that, also 4Runner, Montero, Bronco, etc.
How long does it take the defender to defrost and warm up in the morning (windows frozen solid) no use of de ice spray or ice scraper, all windows cleared and vision unimpeded by interior misted (frozen) windows . Compared to your wrangler window heater review of a couple of weeks ago?
How does it compare to the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk? Same stock tires, similar adjustable suspension and modes. Price?
I don't know much about the jeep but my guess is that if both cars are bone stock then the defender will destroy the jeep in most if not all circumstances, however you could probably buy some really good mods for the jeep and still not come close to the defenders price in which case the jeep would probably win,
@@granty7800 Trailhawk is excellent, very capable with adjustable air suspension, rock rails and undercarriage plates. We have one, and ported "openpilot" (excellent autopilot) but also love the tradition and products from Land Rover. Love how these guys are putting the new defender to the test.
are you going to change the tires to something better suited for winter conditions?
I miss the one you guys ordered. You guys did such a good job and made it your own. And it looked cool....Might be cool to do your slip test with it to show people how it works.
I enjoyed your son saying "Dad", my son is teaching in China and won't be back for Christmas and I've enjoyed, in recent years, going out in the Malvern Hills with my son and dog and hearing him say "Dad" and pointing out something. Anyway, that's just me being daft!

Hi guys!
Quick question, couldn’t find info about it anywhere.
Is it true only 18inch or higher rims can be installed on the new defender ? And what’s the max tyre size that can be installed ?
Thank you !!
Where's the speed-dial button to call the dealership in preparation for its next breakdown and check engine light?

Alberta, Canada here. Enjoying the Defender vids. My mom and I just got back from a tree farm that allows you to cut your own Xmas tree. Great time!
I think to know how good the new Defender is in the snow you have got to have snow tyres fitted. Why not grab some snow tyres on some steels as a separate set? That would give you some testing out for this seasons video posts!
Unfortunately, they cant fit the 18" steelies on this model due to the size of the brakes.
@@daverogers9476 Surely you can fit 20" steelies?
@@daverogers9476 wrong; you can put 18 on them. Those of us that have them did a rear caliper swap. Then place 18 on.

@@peopleschamp7258 I had no idea it was the rear calipers that caused the clearance issue, normally its the larger front discs and calipers that determine what size wheels you can use on a car. Since Land rover beefed up the brakes to match the power output of the larger engines wouldnt downsizing your brakes void warranty and insurance?
It looks great! I know it’s a wee disappointing not having exactly what you wanted, but this will be an interesting series. I could have ridden with you all a little longer!
well thank God for the heated steering wheel - now lets get to the Mall
What I would like to see is wich one will go farther or do better off road.btw the jeep,fj and the rover.
Love the color scheme inside and out.
TO BE CLEAR...are the electrics waterproof....or will the car be ruened if you go 1mm over the recommended wading depth ? Has it military spec like the last Defender ? Minimum temperature and max operating range ? Rated up to 18000 ft in altitude operations?
Did you transfer Nathan to Greenland?
He's following in one of the pickups pulling a flatbed trailer, just in case the Land Rover needs a ride home.
Just watched a video with Nathan and Andre drag racing the TRX and a high-performance side-by-side. Posted a day or two ago.
Hey TFLsomething something...which channel has the Defender versus land cruiser?!? you mention it in other videos but we cant find it.
Thanks.
Sweet sweet Defender, keep the videos coming ;)
What tyre size is that? 20” rims so please let me know the width and aspect.
Thanks
So disappointed so wanted to see an off road defender I could afford should of just put a motor in the white one
Agree. This defeats the original premise of the review.
I agree. More capable 70k defender doesn’t seem as exciting.

Luckily a gentle tug from a New Holland and we were out :)
Loved every second of the 100. What a machine.
Oh, the irony of Land Rover putting Wrangler tyres on its 4x4 cars. Glad someone at LR has a sense of humour. :)
Didn’t know you get the winch installed?
Tommy, a question: does the front have an LSD or does the vehicle strictly rely on brake modulation to "simulate" a locker / LSD?
Are they planning to fit a winch?
Good morning 🌞 Roman and Tommy... watching TFL on the Big screen today!!
Looks like they turn trail in to sled trail (snowmobiles) for winter season ?

Those rims are insulting and contradicting the 70K $ price tag at the same time
They did not pay 70K. They were given this rig for 55K. That was the dealers compromise to get them a rig instead of holding out for what they ordered.
@@WW-wf8tu yeah but it's a production spec, of you buy it, you'll get those wheels lol
I agree and I know they got it for the same price point as the original one they bought, but for that price it should come with some beadlocks and off-road tires IMO. I’d rather get a raptor and upgrade some other things with the change.
@@jesseb280 Beadlocks are not legal on the highway and most state roads.
@@jesseb280 bead locks? That’s not the market LR are aiming at. You only need bead locks for serious off-road and these vehicles are not going to see anything that need bead locks. LR have abandoned their off road heritage and gone straight for the SUV market.

Wow driving over two inches of packed snow.
Simply astounding performance...isn't it? Haven't seen that kind of snow handling capability since I drove a 1962 Ford Falcon...

@@richardsimpson3792 same in the USA
I'm curious your first impression of the new defender versus the old LR2 capability?
ahh Tommy newbie heavy and traction works in snow not light weight. Gotta drive those tires down into solid ground or float with chains
Test drove the Defender yesterday and feel in love with it!! Heard they are coming out with an SVR version, can’t wait

@@Pepe-dq2ib I mean considering the price and tech choices this is what it's best at. That and short easy trail into campsite.
SVR Defender seems like an oxymoron. Why not just buy a sports car if you want high speed handling? Defender is just not about that nor should it be. Why in the world anybody wants to try and turn a top heavy overbuilt truck into a tight handling speed wagon is beyond me.
@@arkos55 as far as I’m aware it’s not going to be an svr it’s going to be called the svx which just means it has the supercharged V8 but without sports suspension tires etc

We are only a few weeks before winter. We are actually in the last part of fall.
Technically mid-winter (northern hemisphere) is Dec 21 (shortest day) so it’s very close to mid-winter.
@@jerrymyahzcat winter starts December 21 and ends March 21 give or take. Middle of winter is the end of January 😆.
@@robertopics Nup. Dec 21 (winter solstice in the northern hemisphere) is the shortest day thus by definition, winter is roughly 6½ weeks either side of the solstice.

@@verliebt3465 Yeah with 110-120 PSI highway tires lol. Put some off road tires on those trucks they'd do a lot better. But they're also dragging 2 tires up front, and 2-3 dual axles on the rear which is up to 14 tires, that's a lot of resistance.
