Most urban drivers (certainly in London anyway) don’t have access to off-street parking at home, so that short range becomes a real issue. If you can’t easily charge at home, that low range becomes hugely inconvenient and a drain on your time.

I agree with your comparison with 205. In my head I thought it similar, until I compared photos. I love 3dr cars, but I compromised an ordered an e - reserved May 19. No regrets. It's quicker than stats imply. And although I was never a fan of automatics, I don't miss gears, clutch or even brakes. One Pedal mode with AutoBrake is amazing! When I occasionally drive my wife's Audi A1, I keep having to use the brake pedal! Seems very strange/old tech. This is the future. And no, it is not that expensive for what you get.
Honestly, after driving an E-UP with less than half the range of this - I’m definitely loving what Honda has done with this car. It has more than double the range, and the better suspension and much better built car is an absolute joy. I hate small cars and especially EV’s, you’re always being constantly reminded of what’s been saved on, either bodywork, insulation, interior etc. But for this car, you feel like you’re driving a normal, well built and safe car. I don’t understand why everyone is bashing it’s range. Someone told me I’d should rather get a Zoe with the increased range. Have you driven one? It’s like it’s constantly draining your life force. Not only that - it got ZERO stars in the last NCAP test. ZERO!!! Appreciate the Honda for what it is. 200km of driving wherever you want, then charge and continue 🤷♂️
130 mile range means it’s great for a daily and terrible for anything else. So I suspect most buyers will own a second car as well for long range but just want this for getting around town. The concept looked sooooo good too, oh well, it’s still kinda cute 😂
Guys that was the best review , 4 minutes on exactly what people want to know without the added crap. I agree if this car claimed 250 miles it would be hands down a no brainer, but for now 130 miles ( actual 105) is scary lo. Thanks for your views
I ordered based on looks and spec, way ahead of getting a Test Drive. That just puts a big smile on your face. I had high expectations, and was not disappointed. It is great to drive. And range is not the issue everyone worries over. Just start counting the number of 'free to use' Charge Points there are @tesco @asda and Council Car Parks
Driven one and it's actually a nice little car and the interior is a great place to sit. Would be a nice car to own for town driving but would still keep my Type R for the b-roads and open roads for a more exciting drive.
That interior is the best thing to happen to Design in ages, and is a link I often forward to ANY slightly design related topic on this RUclips platform. Might switch it up to hotmail.
This car would make a good collectible one day. It will be pretty rare since there won't be too many out there but with it's mix of digital , analog and retro style elements it will be distinctive and quirky enough to make it very desirable.
I have hated Honda vehicles for the last ten years or so, but I adore this thing. I can’t buy an electric car that does less than 300 miles on a charge because I drive 200 miles between my and my mom’s house every week (even in subzero weather) but I do really love the look of it.
This is Honda's Phaeton. (Wait, what ?!?!) They don't expect to sell tens of millions of them but it's a statement of what they can do and is coming from their very own direction. Expect bigger stuff with longer range in the future, all made cooler by this having come first.
This is Honda saying that that can make top quality electric cars designed from scratch. It was never meant to be mass production at first and then they realised there was demand, but then it was too late to reduce cost and the cost for the range is what killed demand at the end.
It is much bigger than it looked in the concept car ! For me it would have been brilliant if it was about the size or even slightly bigger than the original mini !
The issue with range is spot on. This car would fare so much better with more range. Doesn't make sense to shell out that amount of cash when there are options such as the Peugeot e-208 which has over 300km of range for a similar price. So this Honda becomes more of a niche than anything else, where you have to love the design more than the practicality.
@Chris ..... 99% of domestic journey's are less than 100miles in the UK. This is why all the sub 150mile EV's are the best thing you can buy under £30k imho. As a School / shop runner it's perfect for most people.
What gets me is all these cars are coming out with more and more elaborate touchscreens. Touch here ,swipe across, swipe up,swipe down etc. Just to do basic heating or radio controls. Now you can watch a fishtank and feed them while driving.....but you get fined for using a touchscreen mobile phone!

Honda tend to be pretty accurate with their estimated fuel consumption, so I imagine it would be the same here. Everyone I know that drives a Honda, including me, gets within 10% of Honda's estimated consumption. Bloody hell on a long highway drive I do better than Honda says it will do in average. My car should do 1:20km, but I've done 1:21/22 multiple times.

@@justinbreedlove8835 I actually tend to be a pretty quick driver, but I anticipate very well. By looking way ahead of me I don't often have to accelerate or brake very hard and that's where you lose most of your fuel economy. But at a stoplight I do like to keep my speed up, same through corners. What I see a lot of drivers do is as soon as there is a gap they floor it and they are behind the next car and they have to brake again. That is incredibly bad for your fuel economy. Like the fastest lap time by being as smooth as possible, but maintaining as much speed as possible, you get the best fuel economy.
I must say, i've had my eye on the Honda E for about a year and a half ebfore it even came out. Chris certainly knows what he's talking about and i value and respect his car opinions. The reality is, seeing the car is person, sitting in it and test driving it is where the real proof in the pudding will be so i can't really comment until that happens. But i will say this: It's the ONLY rear wheel drive hatchback apart from the BMW 1 series which now have changed thier 2020 and onwards cars to front wheel drive and all wheel drive. That's a BIG plus for me as rear wheel drive cars are SO MUCH nicer and more fun to drive as we all know. I could go on and on and write a short essay however for the sake of other readers i will try and keep it short. I didn't like th elooks at first as i found it a bit girly, too nulky and rounded and i didn't like the round light design. So this remains to be seen if my mind is changed when i see it in real life. As for it having a lounge feel, i live the idea as i like my daily driver (main car) to be as easy and relaxing and enjoyable experience as possible and i feel the Honda E ticks all of those boxes. I just know it's probably easiyer and more relaxing to drive then say my BMW 116d. The screens i cannto wait to use and i hope it doesn;t ebcome too distracting or an unessesary item in the car. I for one LOVE the digital headlights and think the idea is revouloutionary and also the external cameras looks great. It's packed full of tech and driving tech also. I've heard the seats are really comfy which is very important to me expecially having a bad back. Only thing is, it doesn't have an arm rest! Suprised about that so will have to buy one from amazon. The range isn't much of an issue for me at all and shouldn't be for city people as i rarely drive more than 30 miles a day on average so this should be fine, coupled with the increasing availability of charging stations i suppose sacrificing 30 mins of your journey to charging isn't the worst thing for all the pros the car offers. The price is lot i admit but don;t you get £5k back from the government? Is that still on offer? That plus selling my old car would mean the car would cost me around £15k which is what most people say the car should cost around so not too bad plus there's always finance, which for £15k is good! Also, would have to change the alloys as the standard one's design isn't appealing to me but i know Honda offer some more conventional good looking ones so that's fine, also qill get 17" maybe even if it means sacrifying mileage. The one pedal riving is also a cool feature.
They're missing the point about the range. If you live in an urban centre, you need a big battery. People who live in dense areas don't have private garages to charge in. So you need the range to between charges. Lots of people where I live have EV's but live in apartment complexes.
I would really like one but 30.000gbp for a car I can't really take anywhere outside the city (at least unless there's a plug waiting for me at my destination) is too much. I am not a rich man, if I pay that much it would be for my everyday car, weekend included. I can't pay 30.000gbp for a car that basically can only take me to work and back or at most to the next big city and back (barely). If it had maybe 100 miles more of range, then hell yeah.

They probably had to solve some weird problem with the rear suspension. Maybe they can add to the battery next run. They really need inductive street charging to get e cars to catch on.
As a commuter car it's brill. So what if the range is 130miles. My Mrs drive 6 miles to work and 6 back on rural roads & then a 4 miles drive to Sainsbury's. One full charge would last her a week on a cold winters week. I would love her to sell her 1onwer low mileage Honda Cr-z but she won't. I wonder if those prototype wheels are available from anywhere?
If you can only afford one car it is too small to do the many jobs most cars are used for. If you need a second car a £6k supermini will do the job and you have £20k for petrol! All reviewers also rave about the tight turning circle. Sounds great, but I hated the 'quick' steering on a smart forfour. A tiny movement of the wheel and the car front swings out far more than you realise, especially when reversing. Its a bit like a steering a dodgem.
Everyone one moans about Price and Range. The price reflects the engineering: suspension & battery management, plus lots of tech (some of which is OTT) hence the Basic version. But the Range is NOT the issue, as long as you can charge at home, or at work. Plus lots of places you go will have “free to use” charge points. Next time you are out, get your kids to count them. @tesco @asda and in Council Car Parks. I often return home with more % battery than when I left home.
I don't understand why they didn't go with the original design. That was pretty bad ass. And I don't see enough of a difference because of some kind of regulations.
I want one, I don't care about the range because I am never going to need to drive that far in a hurry and the fact it doesn't look like another Honda that just so happens to be electric is a big plus point.

@@stephanvelines7006 yeah the first vag 20v was like 1996. Toyota also had a 20v at that time btw. The first 5 Valve came from Ferrari. Vanos came 92 Vtec 89. True the early 90s Base civic was a 1.3 electronicly controlled carb. But still full aluminium engine, still 16 valves, still double wishbones, still independent rear.
Most urban drivers (certainly in London anyway) don’t have access to off-street parking at home, so that short range becomes a real issue. If you can’t easily charge at home, that low range becomes hugely inconvenient and a drain on your time.
Excellent point.
Not everyone can pull into a garage and charge it at night. It's limited range is going to kill plenty of sales.
Just like there are services now to get the kerb outside your home lowered and you front garden converted into a driveway, there'll likely be similar services where they'll install a charging pillar or plate at your kerbside.
@@mikeward1701 Neither landlords or renters will want to pay that pricey bill. Especially when vehicles in parking spaces can and do change with leases expiring.
@@roaddog7542 As electric vehicles become more popular and prevalent, being able to charge your vehicle will be a priority for prospective tenants, so landlords will have to pony up at some point. It's a question of whether they do it preemptively to be forward thinking and steal a march on their competition, or reactively in response to it.

This is the ideal car for Singapore
not enough charging points anywhere to work. Would be good otherwise
In Singapore with COE this car would cost a fortune
In Singapore, the car would be horrendously expensive and therefore unappealing to most. Singapore as a city is a wonderful candidate for an all electric road network but the infrastructure is very weak and the costs to buy a car are just too high, our government is drunk on excessive motor vehicle taxes and can never give them up

0:28 Hit the nail on the head with the styling of the production car vs the prototype. I was hoping this car would be my first eV... until I saw the production version. The prototype seemed to take cues from the cool Peugeot 205GTi
He is spot on about Apple.
I recently had a go in one and I loved it. It feels very Japanese and oozes authentic old school Honda!
If it was $30k USD, I'd order one right now. What a beautiful little vehicle. Perfect commuter and beep beep car.
His shoes match the car
Those Asics are cool anyone know the name?
Guys that was the best review , 4 minutes on exactly what people want to know without the added crap.
I agree if this car claimed 250 miles it would be hands down a no brainer, but for now 130 miles ( actual 105) is scary lo.
Thanks for your views
I urge the doubters to go and test drive one. I did a few weeks ago and now I really, really want one!
It's nice to see Honda and ASICS collaborating.
You gentlemen are killin' it on TOP GEAR . Absolutely love the chemistry and honesty

Chris was 100% right about apple products!
Honda CVCC throwback😔❤😭😭
Despite its faults, I love this car. Probably a future collector.
Seriously the interior on this thing is a masterpiece
I'm more of tech guy than a car guy an Chris Harris was on point with apple. Shows he's a real critic and not just for cars.
Love the apple analogy he made. It sums it up perfectly, the only thing it’s missing is a proprietary charging cable haha
Let's take a moment to applaud Chris for matching his shoes with the car's colour 👍.
Chris harris and Jack Rix discussing cars is a win.
Driven one and it's actually a nice little car and the interior is a great place to sit. Would be a nice car to own for town driving but would still keep my Type R for the b-roads and open roads for a more exciting drive.
Love ours! Just did a vid with the traction control off...man oh man this thing is fun to drive! Well done Honda!
That interior is the best thing to happen to Design in ages, and is a link I often forward to ANY slightly design related topic on this RUclips platform. Might switch it up to hotmail.
Harris is like the Oracle of the car world, we humbly come to him to hear his truth about all things on wheels. Your word is law Harrisboy
I love the design. It looks so good in the right colour
The same with a thermic motor will be cool too ! The interior is fantastic , exterior too.
This car would make a good collectible one day. It will be pretty rare since there won't be too many out there but with it's mix of digital , analog and retro style elements it will be distinctive and quirky enough to make it very desirable.
@Honda - bring this to the USA
I have hated Honda vehicles for the last ten years or so, but I adore this thing. I can’t buy an electric car that does less than 300 miles on a charge because I drive 200 miles between my and my mom’s house every week (even in subzero weather) but I do really love the look of it.
The nice modern interior will make you feel at home 🏘️ no matter where you go. Really need to see the experience for myself maybe a test drive.
Prototype looked so good!
the future versions of this, I will definitely buy!
3:58 'First car for your kids, so they can't go far from the house'
Ha ha aha HA HA a ha. Lol... ☺
This is Honda's Phaeton. (Wait, what ?!?!)
They don't expect to sell tens of millions of them but it's a statement of what they can do and is coming from their very own direction. Expect bigger stuff with longer range in the future, all made cooler by this having come first.
I don't agree with the opinion on the car, but Chris is bang on the money on priorities at Honda v Toyota
This is Honda saying that that can make top quality electric cars designed from scratch. It was never meant to be mass production at first and then they realised there was demand, but then it was too late to reduce cost and the cost for the range is what killed demand at the end.
is possible aftermarket like engine tune company modifi or put more battery in it,make it longer range?
That green 😍 is this full electric?
Yeh 😊
@@edvickery8674 thank you mate
Dear BBC, you need to give Chris his own show.
It is much bigger than it looked in the concept car ! For me it would have been brilliant if it was about the size or even slightly bigger than the original mini !
I can’t believe we actually wait another year for the next season 😭
The issue with range is spot on. This car would fare so much better with more range. Doesn't make sense to shell out that amount of cash when there are options such as the Peugeot e-208 which has over 300km of range for a similar price. So this Honda becomes more of a niche than anything else, where you have to love the design more than the practicality.
This car is now £37k as at Oct 23
Make the design closer to the concept and increase the range to 200-250 and they have a banger.
@Chris ..... 99% of domestic journey's are less than 100miles in the UK. This is why all the sub 150mile EV's are the best thing you can buy under £30k imho. As a School / shop runner it's perfect for most people.
Its great to see that they still try to make electric cars exciting.
I wish it was coming to the states. perfect to and from work car for me! would love to own one.
"For the last 20 years Apple has proved that you can make a product that's not as good as much more mundane product. It doesn't have anything like the specs but it looks and feels great and comes in a fancy package people pay double for it." 👍

Believe it or not Honda is actually not a car company but a technical research and manufacturing company which has a branch that makes vehicles. Toyota on the other hand is an automotive company.

Concept was beautiful i agree
Get pulled over by police for playing with the screen, 'Sir you realise you are not allowed to touch your Sat Nav whilst driving'. No that's ok officer I was feeding the fake goldfish on the screen.

They will never be May, Hammond and Clarkson

It’s perhaps not the best but it is ideal for a lot of people in a LOT of countries
$20G I'd consider. Counting you can get a used certified low mileage leaf for less than 15 in the states, that's a tough sell.
I don't that it does not have the range
I don't care that it has a small boot
I don't care it is expensive
I just love the way it looks especially on the inside and it's a Honda (like my first car)
If I had the money I would buy one in a heartbeat
It's only 130 range and u will at most get 2/3 of it
Honda tend to be pretty accurate with their estimated fuel consumption, so I imagine it would be the same here. Everyone I know that drives a Honda, including me, gets within 10% of Honda's estimated consumption. Bloody hell on a long highway drive I do better than Honda says it will do in average. My car should do 1:20km, but I've done 1:21/22 multiple times.
@@markeldik7057 I have a electric/hybrid car electric motors on the freeway are no good at all they get terrible numbers not being able to stop then go forward they pump up those recharge numbers
@@justinbreedlove8835 I know electric isn't very suited to highway driving, but this car is clearly not meant for highway driving and even then purely highway driving it gets around 100miles of range. Sure not great, but it's plenty for 99% of the time.
@@markeldik7057 u must not drive fast at all car company test there no exactly how most people actually drive byt have a good 1 peace
But i will say this:
It's the ONLY rear wheel drive hatchback apart from the BMW 1 series which now have changed thier 2020 and onwards cars to front wheel drive and all wheel drive.
130 miles brand new, but how far will it go as the years add on
They're missing the point about the range.
Making the car hybrid would have made more sensible
Right?! They already have the crz.
I foresee petrol fueled cars being a niche product purely for enjoyment. Like the Honda btw!
Fossil fuel and ICE cars will become the playthings of the wealthy. Fuel, tax, insurance costs will all be hiked out of the realms of the average joe. Not gonna happen for a while, but in say 30-50 years from now.

Lovely little car, Honda is just wetting their feet with this car, they need a full on electric fleet or at least a car and SUV
I saw one of these Honda’s the other day in Southport. So someone took the plunge and bought one.
They probably had to solve some weird problem with the rear suspension. Maybe they can add to the battery next run. They really need inductive street charging to get e cars to catch on.
Actually, its rear wheel drive
As a commuter car it's brill. So what if the range is 130miles. My Mrs drive 6 miles to work and 6 back on rural roads & then a 4 miles drive to Sainsbury's. One full charge would last her a week on a cold winters week. I would love her to sell her 1onwer low mileage Honda Cr-z but she won't. I wonder if those prototype wheels are available from anywhere?
They need to make a "Long range" version of this then I see it being worthwhile, still cool however
if i could afford one, hell yea, would want one
U must see honda civic 2nd generation
That concept looks like a 80s hot hatch, superb. Very 205 gti-y
This is the perfect urban commuter car, the mileage is fine!
This car looks so cool
Low key looks like a New gen of the MK1/MK2 City Golf
So now it’s winter, heating on, demister, lights etc. What’s the range then?
As far as the subaru garage for a trade in.
id buy one if it comes to Australia
Imagine if it could do say 200miles and 0-60mph in 6 seconds (ie 300km and 0-100kph in 6 seconds) this would be the best little car on earth.
I Wld love to have this car. Range wise isn’t a problem.
I want one, I don't care about the range because I am never going to need to drive that far in a hurry and the fact it doesn't look like another Honda that just so happens to be electric is a big plus point.
I really wish this was available in the states...
It doesn't have a bed, It can't tow 900 tons. No V8. They would sell like 5 of these in the US.
Give this a 300 mile range and it would be a seriously cool car
They are leasing from £250 per month. Not too bad, list price is pointless when 80% of private cars in UK are pcp / lease
