I’ve always appreciated how this animatic shows just how horrifying it actually was. A lot of the fans make JD just misunderstood but he’s not. He’s traumatized and upset, and instead of coming to peace with his trauma he lashes out and hurts others

I honestly love this. It perfectly portrays Veronica’s emotions, and how she slowly started being dragged into his toxic words. As you can tell, to her it was how he would put it “you saved me” and bla bla bla. But during the actually killing spree, you can see her slowly seeing things in a not so metaphorical way. So yes, even though people tend to mock her for being okay with his killing talk but not when he actually does it, theres something called a metaphor. She genuinely believed he worshipped her, and that he was being loyal. Yet after finding out how he not only lied to her but partially used her, she’s hurt. She’s slowly loosing his sanity, which is beautifully represented in this animatic. Definitely one of my favorite 10/10
It's also a fair point that in real life, there's a thing called black humor. People often joke in harsh and disturbing ways. But there's a line and it can be hard to tell if, or we don't want to believe that the people we love could truly cross it, even when we sense something isn't right with them. Hindsight is 20/20, and it is easy to judge with all the facts from outside of a situation.

To all the people who say they’re couple goals or romanticize their relationship, I point them to this video. Seriously, this is my favorite animatic of this song. It captures the abusive and manipulative nature of the relationship so well. Good job!
This is my Shame Channel I enjoyed their relationship in the first couple of songs because I thought it was going to be Veronica helping J.D through some stuff (I went into Heathers blind), but after getting deeper into it I wish Veronica had noped out way sooner. He loved her, but he was manipulating her and his obsession with her was unhealthy for both of them. He flat out said he worshiped her.
I think Veronica was the only person who showed JD any real love and compassion besides his mum, which caused JD to become overly emotionally attached to her, and worship her as he says, he really does love her, but has an extremely sick and twisted idea of love in itself. He tries to make the world a perfect place for Veronica, and because he is a deranged psychopath he thinks killing anyone who has ever done her wrong is the right way to win her over, which is obviously not. Then when Veronica tries to pull out, he manipulates her into thinking he’s still a good person, and makes her feel sorry for him. Yes, he is a terrible person and i can definitely see the absusiveness of this relationship. But everything he did was out of love, i’m not saying he’s a good person because he’s not, he just took his love too far

I like how in this animatic it starts out as goofy star crossed lovers stuff but as the somg progresses and he repeats the chorus you see the real meaning of what jd is saying and how deranged it truly is. It also shows how naive veronica is compared to jd and ahh its just so perfect

Sorry for replying to almost a year old comment, but while I don't think J.D's actions are valid, he did go through some trauma. You say "psychopath and sociopath", as if all psychopaths and sociopaths are dangerous, which they're not. No one wakes up one morning and thinks, "I want to have a mental disorder." I think people should give villains emotions and goals and not just portray them as "horrible people and nothing else." Of course, J.D's actions shouldn't be excused or forgiven, he's not an uwu misunderstood bean who deserves protection, but I'm just saying he has feelings, and not everyone who is insane is a bad person. Besides, technically speaking, he isn't really a psychopath... pyschopathy is a real disorder and J.D hasn't shown signs of having it.

The point is that both words describe nearly the same thing but under slightly different circumstances, so saying someone is both a psychopath and a sociopath makes no sense. Many people cite the difference as psychopaths are born the way they are, but sociopaths become that way through childhood trauma and the like. Saying someone is both a psychopath and a sociopath is essentially saying they have the qualities associated with psychopathy and sociopathy while also saying that they were apparently born that way and... Not born that way? That may be a slightly inaccurate definition or gross simplification but basically I just have a pet peeve over people using terms like psychopath and sociopath while showing they only have a surface level understanding of what it means.

They do impulsive actions and usually become what they are because of their families while psychopaths are secretive, do their actions in secret so they don’t damage their reputation and damage their trust with others, and they usually have always been a psychopath, they choose to be one.
Anyone notice in the first verse JD says: "The dinosaurs all turned to dust They died because god said they must" Then in the last on he says: "The dinosaurs *will turn to dust* They'll die because *we* say they must." In the first verse, he's saying people die because god say they must, and that they're making space for the next generation. In the second, he's referencing to the people he already killed and the people he wants to kill in the future, and that he's basically become god.
That's... basically why Veronica said "Say hi to God" in I Am Damaged. From when Veronica and JD met 'till that moment, JD was basically playing God by killing people mercilessly. Thus the lines Veronica sang, "We're not special. We're not different. We don't choose who lives or dies" in Seventeen. But, well...Veronica actually THOUGHT the deaths and injuries would end there. Course, you have the whole Martha and "tonight our school is Vietnam" mess. The line "Say hi to God" can be interpreted in MANY ways. Veronica could be saying that since she believes JD is truly a good person in the end, and that he'll go to Heaven and meet God. While I DO feel that's the case, I also believe she says that because, well, she's implying they're not God. "Say hi to God" is implying there's someone who should ACTUALLY be "choose(ing) who lives or dies". In Our Love Is *God* (this video), JD literally sang, "Our love is *god* ". It's also in the title. BUT, have you ever taken into account how, well, "The dinosaurs all turned to dust. They died because *god* said they must". Since their love is god, JD's saying "The dinosaurs all turned to dust. They died because *our love* said they must". The "dinosaurs" in this case are the many deaths that occurred, like Heather C, Ram, Kurt and potentially the whole school. They were going to die because "(their love) said they must".

THAT SYMBOLISM HOLY SHIT. The bloody spiderweb imagery at the end was especially horrifying and shocking. LOVE IT. I liked that you kept the mineral water and "gay" paraphernalia from the movie. And good job on lean Ram and chubby Kurt; body positivity and representation for ALL GENDERS! Yay! Also Kurt's chub is kind of adorable. He's like a stocky lil' bulldog. (A really poorly trained dog who bites ankles, pees on the carpet, and humps everything that moves, but still.) It's actually kind of heartbreaking to watch this because you depict Veronica and JD with SO MUCH chemistry and tenderness (when JD isn't showing his damaged side.) They constantly give each other small touches and kisses, they hold hands, they smile all the time, and they cling to each other like they're the most important thing in the world to one another. And it's almost cruel of you to show us that because we all know that they won't get their happy ending. But then again, if you're in the Heathers fandom you gotta be ready to board the Angst Train at any time, so good on you for giving us tickets to ride. ;)

Lowkey, the moment at the end where JD is repeating “Our Love is God”, the bass that follows each pause makes this feel more terrifying. Like- it really sets in the fact that JD is a killer.
What I really like about this Animatic is how Kurt and Ram react at 3:44. They both see the guns pulled out but Kurt is more confused while Ram is actually freaked out (Cause Ram is the smarter one.) and so Ram pushes Kurt out of the way because he doesn't realize in time. I honestly prefer the push over them missing Kurt.
I just noticed how sad this is for Veronica. Seeing two of your childhood.. “friends”? Murdered by this insane man who claimed to love you and deceived you all along. And sure Ram and kirt were disgusting, but Veronica actually felt sad and horrified at Ram’s death and seeing kirt go To was horrifying. I love how you show their, I'm guessing souls, as Veronica being the light that JD needs cuz of his darkened soul. But his soul was too dark, and this shows it, her soul being captured and taken over by the darkness, but still having the light to keep her from going insane like him. She's trapped. But in the she uses the light and destroys the dark that had manipulated her and abused her power. Edit: Its kinda sad they died. I mean, yes teens can be crazy mean. But they can change, and mature, or, they can serve the consequences. And what broke my heart more was that Ram pushed Kurt out of the way so he wouldn't get shot. That shows right there that they did have a heart. That they had good in them. They just needed time.

'let him manipulate her' as some times you don't know your being manipulated till either after the ordeal. but luckily for Veronica she was smart enough to see it sooner. JD manipulated her into thinking he was just a nice guy who needed help, but in reality he was far from help. and in some way he did love veronica but it might be a mix of Love and Obsession, slowly leading more to Obsession. I am not saying you said it is veronica's fault for falling for JD's tricks. and as you said, he was also somewhat toying with her emotions.

When Jd is tainting veronica's light at the end when saying "our love is god" my stomach just drops but when she starts singing with him so desperately i just.... holy shit, i can't explain that sensation but it's epic and terrible at the same time. your work conveys so much emotion i can't begin to describe it but let me just say that you are an excellent animator and i can't wait to see more from you. you single handedly got me into heather.
someone pointed it out to me and I couldn't believe I never noticed it before but at the end Veronica is saying "our love is gone" which makes the animation even more beautiful because her regret is even more pronounced when JD seems to be corrupting her light.
I love the details in this song. Every time I heard this song, I always thought when Veronica sings at the end she was kind of agreeing with JD's message but holy crap after this video I can hear how frantic and scared her singing. She's scared of what she got into and even scared of her own death at the hands of this toxic guy. Like the tombstone in "plant our garden here" because they were planting more corpses in the cemetery and ultimately, their own graves. And holy crap those smooth movements and expressions, every video you post gets more intricate I seriously love them so much. Edit: I just watched yet again and noticed that when you put the Light Veronica dancing with Dark JD in "but then you melted me away" the dance is like in Seventeen where Veronica convinces him for a bit and the animatic has light following her moves so awesome continuity! This account is sketchy Also, in the live version she sounds a whole lot more teriffied at the end because JD is doing that weird back hug thing again but this time still holding a gun. Which is a nice touch on Barrett's part. But the animation adds a whole new light!
A few minute details: -"Ich Luge" means "I Lie" in german. -JD and Veronica are probably using 2 different Meanings of "Raise" during the lyric "We'll Raise our city here." Given JD's intent, it's safe to assume he's using "Raze", as in destroy or flatten, whereas Veronica is just using the regular "Raise" as in, erect or build. -Veronica's screaming of "Our Love is God" at the end sounds a lot like "Our Love Is Gone", as in, she no longer loves JD because he's a murderer. Also, The dinosaurs will turn to dust, they'll die because god said they must. Our Love Is God. = They'll die because our love demands it.
It's really mean of me to compare one to another, but I think you are the only person who ever caught on to the fake at the end Veronica says 'our love is gone' Some people don't animate the fact she is terrified, that JD turns out to be a monster. The movie doesn't particularly do it well in this scene either.. But you? Oh man you did it flawlessly.
Nope it's "Our love is god" and tbh I really don't think that JD is the only culprit here. Veronica is redeemable, but is still a willing participant for the end. She is also turning evil but changes at the end. It's the whole protagonistic cycle: Good, bad, redemption. It would make no sense if it was good, good, good.
ok this is rather small but i absolutely love the designs for kurt and ram. in a lot of art and animatics (hell even in the darn movie and the musical) i can barely tell the two apart but here it so obvious?? and makes me happy because a lot of the time people make it seem like they're the same two people even though they're not and with your designs it really cements that in my head. i just really love them because it captures the fact that kurt and ram were still teenagers but also still really dickish, awful teenagers and it's just, they're so good another thing i really like about the animatic is when JD was about to shoot kurt, a lot of other animatics ( and tbh the musical as well) just doesn't seem,,right you know? like the actions and expressions just don't match with the song but here when i watched that part it just, clicked. You portrayed it spectacularly and i really enjoyed the symbolism and fluidness of the whole animatic!

Holy shit. I just got the craziest imagery from that collage of clips at the end. It's like Veronica is an innocent soul and JD is the devil trying to taint it.
Missyasylum seems to use spider webs as a symbolism for peer pressure, since it's used in both "Candy Store" and "Big Fun" in relation to the Heathers. It's a good fit since the ending is basically JD pressuring Veronica into agreeing with his warped version of affection. It also works since up to this point, the Heathers (and Kurt and Ram) are the worst people the audience have seen, and this scene is the one that establishes that JD is the real villain. Hence why he inherits the spider web motif, albeit a bloody, more disturbing version.
The way Veronica says our love is god at the end always gives me chills. She thought thru the whole song it meant they were fated to be together, that no one could get in the way of their love because it was meant to happen. By the end she realizes that it she has enabled JD (albeit unknowingly) and that no one could get in *JD's* way because he would destroy them and its her love and support that emboldened him to act this way

I love how at the end you portrayed both Veronicas and JDs perspective JD saw it as wiping dirt off a counter but Veronica saw it as it actually was, the brutal thieving of a human life. She felt trapped and scared to confront JD at the time and was a fly in his web of lies. JD again saw it as some favor to the world that he was doing with his love. It was beautiful and I am in love

(And while yes the movie has him talking to Heather Duke and both blackmailing/coaxing her into being the new leader? these is the refrense of Heather Chandler as "the white whale that sucked down some bad plankton and bellyflopped into the coffee table. now it's you're turn to take the helm".) that's basically this moment in a nutshell.

I honestly love this. It perfectly portrays Veronica’s emotions, and how she slowly started being dragged into his toxic words. As you can tell, to her it was how he would put it “you saved me” and bla bla bla. But during the actually killing spree, you can see her slowly seeing things in a not so metaphorical way. So yes, even though people tend to mock her for being okay with his killing talk but not when he actually does it, theres something called a metaphor. She genuinely believed he worshipped her, and that he was being loyal. Yet after finding out how he not only lied to her but partially used her, she’s hurt. She’s slowly loosing his sanity, which is beautifully represented in this animatic.
Definitely one of my favorite 10/10
It's also a fair point that in real life, there's a thing called black humor. People often joke in harsh and disturbing ways. But there's a line and it can be hard to tell if, or we don't want to believe that the people we love could truly cross it, even when we sense something isn't right with them. I enjoyed their relationship in the first couple of songs because I thought it was going to be Veronica helping J.D through some stuff (I went into Heathers blind), but after getting deeper into it I wish Veronica had noped out way sooner. He loved her, but he was manipulating her and his obsession with her was unhealthy for both of them. He flat out said he worshiped her.

He tries to make the world a perfect place for Veronica, and because he is a deranged psychopath he thinks killing anyone who has ever done her wrong is the right way to win her over, which is obviously not. Then when Veronica tries to pull out, he manipulates her into thinking he’s still a good person, and makes her feel sorry for him. Yes, he is a terrible person and i can definitely see the absusiveness of this relationship. But everything he did was out of love, i’m not saying he’s a good person because he’s not, he just took his love too far

Sorry for replying to almost a year old comment, but while I don't think J.D's actions are valid, he did go through some trauma. You say "psychopath and sociopath", as if all psychopaths and sociopaths are dangerous, which they're not.
No one wakes up one morning and thinks, "I want to have a mental disorder." I think people should give villains emotions and goals and not just portray them as "horrible people and nothing else."
Of course, J.D's actions shouldn't be excused or forgiven, he's not an uwu misunderstood bean who deserves protection, but I'm just saying he has feelings, and not everyone who is insane is a bad person. Besides, technically speaking, he isn't really a psychopath... pyschopathy is a real disorder and J.D hasn't shown signs of having it.

Saying someone is both a psychopath and a sociopath is essentially saying they have the qualities associated with psychopathy and sociopathy while also saying that they were apparently born that way and... That may be a slightly inaccurate definition or gross simplification but basically I just have a pet peeve over people using terms like psychopath and sociopath while showing they only have a surface level understanding of what it means.

That's... basically why Veronica said "Say hi to God" in I Am Damaged. From when Veronica and JD met 'till that moment, JD was basically playing God by killing people mercilessly. Thus the lines Veronica sang, "We're not special. We're not different. We don't choose who lives or dies" in Seventeen. But, well...Veronica actually THOUGHT the deaths and injuries would end there. Course, you have the whole Martha and "tonight our school is Vietnam" mess.
The line "Say hi to God" can be interpreted in MANY ways. Veronica could be saying that since she believes JD is truly a good person in the end, and that he'll go to Heaven and meet God. While I DO feel that's the case, I also believe she says that because, well, she's implying they're not God. "Say hi to God" is implying there's someone who should ACTUALLY be "choose(ing) who lives or dies".
In Our Love Is *God* (this video), JD literally sang, "Our love is *god* ". It's also in the title. BUT, have you ever taken into account how, well, "The dinosaurs all turned to dust. They died because *god* said they must". Since their love is god, JD's saying "The dinosaurs all turned to dust. They died because *our love* said they must". The "dinosaurs" in this case are the many deaths that occurred, like Heather C, Ram, Kurt and potentially the whole school. They were going to die because "(their love) said they must".

THAT SYMBOLISM HOLY SHIT. The bloody spiderweb imagery at the end was especially horrifying and shocking. LOVE IT. I liked that you kept the mineral water and "gay" paraphernalia from the movie. And good job on lean Ram and chubby Kurt; body positivity and representation for ALL GENDERS! Yay! Also Kurt's chub is kind of adorable. He's like a stocky lil' bulldog. (A really poorly trained dog who bites ankles, pees on the carpet, and humps everything that moves, but still.)
It's actually kind of heartbreaking to watch this because you depict Veronica and JD with SO MUCH chemistry and tenderness (when JD isn't showing his damaged side.) They constantly give each other small touches and kisses, they hold hands, they smile all the time, and they cling to each other like they're the most important thing in the world to one another. And it's almost cruel of you to show us that because we all know that they won't get their happy ending. What I really like about this Animatic is how Kurt and Ram react at 3:44. They both see the guns pulled out but Kurt is more confused while Ram is actually freaked out (Cause Ram is the smarter one.) and so Ram pushes Kurt out of the way because he doesn't realize in time. I honestly prefer the push over them missing Kurt.

And sure Ram and kirt were disgusting, but Veronica actually felt sad and horrified at Ram’s death and seeing kirt go To was horrifying.
But it was still amazing for the musical and movie cuz like honestly it was an emotional roller coaster and that’s what it needed.... now I’m going to cry... good day.

I love how you show their, I'm guessing souls, as Veronica being the light that JD needs cuz of his darkened soul. But his soul was too dark, and this shows it, her soul being captured and taken over by the darkness, but still having the light to keep her from going insane like him. She's trapped. But in the she uses the light and destroys the dark that had manipulated her and abused her power.
Edit: Its kinda sad they died. I mean, yes teens can be crazy mean. But they can change, and mature, or, they can serve the consequences. And what broke my heart more was that Ram pushed Kurt out of the way so he wouldn't get shot. That shows right there that they did have a heart. That they had good in them. They just needed time.

'let him manipulate her' as some times you don't know your being manipulated till either after the ordeal. but luckily for Veronica she was smart enough to see it sooner. JD manipulated her into thinking he was just a nice guy who needed help, but in reality he was far from help. and in some way he did love veronica but it might be a mix of Love and Obsession, slowly leading more to Obsession. I am not saying you said it is veronica's fault for falling for JD's tricks. and as you said, he was also somewhat toying with her emotions.

When Jd is tainting veronica's light at the end when saying "our love is god" my stomach just drops but when she starts singing with him so desperately i just.... holy shit, i can't explain that sensation but it's epic and terrible at the same time. your work conveys so much emotion i can't begin to describe it but let me just say that you are an excellent animator and i can't wait to see more from you. you single handedly got me into heather.
someone pointed it out to me and I couldn't believe I never noticed it before but at the end Veronica is saying "our love is gone" which makes the animation even more beautiful because her regret is even more pronounced when JD seems to be corrupting her light.
I love the details in this song. Every time I heard this song, I always thought when Veronica sings at the end she was kind of agreeing with JD's message but holy crap after this video I can hear how frantic and scared her singing. She's scared of what she got into and even scared of her own death at the hands of this toxic guy. Like the tombstone in "plant our garden here" because they were planting more corpses in the cemetery and ultimately, their own graves. And holy crap those smooth movements and expressions, every video you post gets more intricate I seriously love them so much.
Edit: I just watched yet again and noticed that when you put the Light Veronica dancing with Dark JD in "but then you melted me away" the dance is like in Seventeen where Veronica convinces him for a bit and the animatic has light following her moves so awesome continuity!

I love how veronica becomes a glowing figure in JDs mind while he sings I worship you. It just is so visually stunning and perfectly visualized what JD is saying
This account is sketchy Also, in the live version she sounds a whole lot more teriffied at the end because JD is doing that weird back hug thing again but this time still holding a gun. Which is a nice touch on Barrett's part. But the animation adds a whole new light!
A few minute details:
-"Ich Luge" means "I Lie" in german.
-JD and Veronica are probably using 2 different Meanings of "Raise" during the lyric "We'll Raise our city here." Given JD's intent, it's safe to assume he's using "Raze", as in destroy or flatten, whereas Veronica is just using the regular "Raise" as in, erect or build.
-Veronica's screaming of "Our Love is God" at the end sounds a lot like "Our Love Is Gone", as in, she no longer loves JD because he's a murderer.
Also, The dinosaurs will turn to dust, they'll die because god said they must. Our Love Is God. = They'll die because our love demands it.
It's really mean of me to compare one to another, but I think you are the only person who ever caught on to the fake at the end Veronica says 'our love is gone'
Some people don't animate the fact she is terrified, that JD turns out to be a monster. The movie doesn't particularly do it well in this scene either..

Nope it's "Our love is god" and tbh I really don't think that JD is the only culprit here. Veronica is redeemable, but is still a willing participant for the end. She is also turning evil but changes at the end. It's the whole protagonistic cycle: Good, bad, redemption. It would make no sense if it was good, good, good.
Even so it's all subjective, and this was an absolutely fantastic animatic.

ok this is rather small but i absolutely love the designs for kurt and ram. in a lot of art and animatics (hell even in the darn movie and the musical) i can barely tell the two apart but here it so obvious?? and makes me happy because a lot of the time people make it seem like they're the same two people even though they're not and with your designs it really cements that in my head. i just really love them because it captures the fact that kurt and ram were still teenagers but also still really dickish, awful teenagers and it's just, they're so good
another thing i really like about the animatic is when JD was about to shoot kurt, a lot of other animatics ( and tbh the musical as well) just doesn't seem,,right you know? like the actions and expressions just don't match with the song but here when i watched that part it just, clicked. You portrayed it spectacularly and i really enjoyed the symbolism and fluidness of the whole animatic!

Holy shit. I just got the craziest imagery from that collage of clips at the end. It's like Veronica is an innocent soul and JD is the devil trying to taint it.
Missyasylum seems to use spider webs as a symbolism for peer pressure, since it's used in both "Candy Store" and "Big Fun" in relation to the Heathers. It's a good fit since the ending is basically JD pressuring Veronica into agreeing with his warped version of affection.
It also works since up to this point, the Heathers (and Kurt and Ram) are the worst people the audience have seen, and this scene is the one that establishes that JD is the real villain. Hence why he inherits the spider web motif, albeit a bloody, more disturbing version.
The way Veronica says our love is god at the end always gives me chills. She thought thru the whole song it meant they were fated to be together, that no one could get in the way of their love because it was meant to happen. By the end she realizes that it she has enabled JD (albeit unknowingly) and that no one could get in *JD's* way because he would destroy them and its her love and support that emboldened him to act this way

I love how at the end you portrayed both Veronicas and JDs perspective JD saw it as wiping dirt off a counter but Veronica saw it as it actually was, the brutal thieving of a human life. She felt trapped and scared to confront JD at the time and was a fly in his web of lies. JD again saw it as some favor to the world that he was doing with his love. It was beautiful and I am in love
