to be fair - _fuck_ Spotify. it's a dogshit service for music discovery. RUclips's predatory recommendations algorithm - the one they use to keep you glued to your computer for as long as possible - happens to be a _phenomenal_ resource for music discovery, on the other hand. that said - this track was never on an album. it wasn't even released on an EP - it was literally just a one-off track. it'll probably never be on Spotify.
The Dillinger Esc Plan always managed to create a lot of scale/size through rapidly switching between high and low frequencies, and that style's complimented here by a punchy and compressed/tight production. The drums are fat, and the guitars, fatter! It might not sound like typical Dillinger, but it's one monolithic slab of alternative metal, all the same.
it kills me that this is just in drop D. i've got 7s and 8s and nearly all of my 6s are downtuned - i love these guitars and i try so hard not to think about how much it really doesn't even fucking matter, at least tonally rofl
The production on this is KILLER. The drum sounds, the guitar tone, the chugs, Greg's voice is clear as day... man. Probably the best-produced Dillinger track. Certainly the most metal sounding (from a production standpoint). Good job, boys.
***** It's an electronic kit. There is even some electro resonance on the kick. It's the 'style' of the song. I don't mind the song, but it's more industrial than metal.
Dillinger's music is beautiful. All my friends are very good intelligent people, really. And they love good music. But no one from them can understand my passion for this type of music. It makes me sad sometimes.
I get goosebumps from how much the musicality resembles something siphoned from my very own veins. I think anyone with anger issues will appreciate this track to various degrees. Musically it flawlessly follows the oscillating waves of pure rage and momentary introspection perfectly, which build a complete portrait of an exhaustive tantrum. As many of us know; these can be triggered by anything.
This shit's thick! I felt a fist fight bubbling up right out of the gate. I like the NIN vibe of the "just a smile" repeater. 'Terrible Lie' comes to mind, and the scream at the end of that segment is fucking ruthless. Love the ending.
So god damn angry that it took me until 2016 to see em live, but at least I made it happen twice this year. So much pure fun, crowd surfing, stage diving I've ever been involved with. Every other metal band, take notes.
The production seems to be a problem for some people... Ire Works was a production-heavy record. Anyway, this is just a single, and at least it sounds different. A fun track to please the fans instead of having them wait years for a new record. Also, it has a NIN vibe. More NIN vibe than the last 20 years of NIN discography.
Depends what you call a NIN vibe. I think NIN is always changing, but they have have fundamentals that influence their sound. What you're talking about are some of the earlier NIN fundamentals. But, The Fragile had much of that too and took a turn toward the more beat oriented and as well as brian eno type sound scapes. Yeah, some of what's great about this song that has some of the early as well as melodic NIN vibes is not found as much from NIN's second era (2005-2015), however since this comment was written in 2014, I can see that you were talking about The Downward Spiral and Broken. You should check out the NIN trilogy from 2016-2018. NIN has revisited its early version and given it an innovative twist. Check out songs like Burning Bright, The Idea of You, Not Anymore, Shit Mirror, Ahead of Ourselves, Over and out and finally The Background World. The ending of Happiness Is A Smile reminds me of Tool's Ticks and Leeches. But def some cool NIN & even Deftones influence here. Awesome song.
This is a one off B-Side from the Option Paralysis tour that they wrote on the road and recorded in 20 minutes with Evetts via email on the bus. Billy wasn't even playing Drums. They released it as a single EP and have it away on the final leg of the tour to anyone who was buying merch.
Aweome song!!! Love DEP!! This is pretty heavy stuff, i like it...they don't need to play chaotic and a thousand miles an hour all the time to be equally brutal
That fucking guitar part during "a fortress crumbles from inside, no fix when you're building on the broken, and happiness is just a smile" is amazing. Stuck in my head all day.
I got to see them, but it was before Greg when they opened for Mr. Bungle all the way back in 2000! Great show, didn’t know who the fuck they were at the time, but I’ll always consider them to be the LOUDEST band I’ve ever went to see! Lol...they were mind-blowing, but that was before they wrote any of the tunes with Greg, which for me, are the cream of the crop! 😉
I feel a weird sense of sadness sometimes when I listen to DEP... like I can never do anything this intense and passionate in my life, it's just not a level that's possible to reach for most.
@@farzana2686 I only discovered them with their final album, it was an amazing experience to be able to devour their whole discography and they quickly shot up the list to my top bands ever. These guys are playing live in Tilberg, Netherlands on the 8th of August. They split just before I got into them, so I never expected a chance to see them until now. That Guy read his statement again. you agree with him, but he's trying to show you the other side as well so you won't bitch on those with DO compare. ;)
Devin Ringwald That's only because you obviously haven't heard their album The Great Southern Trendkill. You can listen to that album and hear so much of this band in it. Tons of traditional hardcore as well. Give it a listen. I'd suggest Suicide Note Part 2. Crazy af.

I remember finding this song after crashing my car due to having a seizure and my friend group kinda fell away from me due to me not being able to come out for a while and I had to walk everywhere and start all over again. I was so angry…luckily I had my family. Family is everything 💯
The sound of this bass during the first main riff reminds me of Admiral Angry's guitar tone (yeah, they tune low as HELL) and its awesome! (if you like TDEP, and you like Meshuggah, maybe a little bit of sludge metal, youd like Admiral Angry)
+Psyfonify i remember ben weinman sharing the illusion of strength on his facebook page a few years ago. so an inspiration from admiral angry.wouldn't be surprising.
I don't get it : mY GIRLFRIEND LOVES ALL KINDS of metal , slipnot+++ , but for some reason hates DEP. So I have to play it after she is on the verge of passing out/sleeping.These guys are loud , yet have some of the most clean lyrics that can be found over the last 70 years of rock/pop. This is as close as these guys get to a melody huh? I went through a phase where DEP was all over my work out mix but fell out from them a bit. The news of there break up brought me here. Dig this song
Currently, I guess. One of us is the killer, nothing's funny, and paranoia shields are all very melodic. This song is somewhere in the middle of their abrasive mathcore and their melodic tendencies.
i dont even think THEY knew how perfect this was.
I bet they did, I imagine them being off their heads to nothing more than their own music and shows
Oh they did - look at that mug! 1:11
