    I worked as an apprentice mechanic for a marine engineering company in Plymouth (UK) in my late teens and when the city hosted a round of offshore powerboat racing our section of dock was hired as a workspace by one of the teams so we got to have a good look inside. Somehow they'd managed to fit 4 of the big Lamborghini V12s in the back of this huge catamaran hulled thing all running on race gas with turbos so big you could have comfortably rented space inside for a family of 4. I think they said the engines could put out a comfortable 1500hp each and keep the boat running at over 200mph all day in calm conditions without even a flicker from the temperature gauge. I'll never forget the noise of the engines firing up, we must have been 200yrds away in a support boat when the engines came on one by one and even at that range the volume still hurt your ears, the saving grace was that when the pilots put the hammer down the boat disappeared so fast into the distance that by the time the engines had come on song they were far enough that you could appreciate the noise without all the blood coming out of your ears. We didn't get to meet the pilots but apparently they'd consider a bit of bleeding from the ears a fairly normal day at the office, dislodging lungs and other various internal organs isn't unusual in rough seas as it's just like driving down a dirt road at 200mph in a car with no suspension

      @@aaronisgrate It was mostly red I think, catamaran hull and about 50ft long. I don't remember much more than that unfortunately, had a brief tour while it was on dry land after finishing work on the Saturday and then watching it get towed out of the estuary for testing on Monday

      Sounds like that was back in the day when safety equipment for a beast like that was a pair of Ray bans a tash and big set of gonads.

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 5 лет назад +7

      @@williamcostigan469 it was in the early 2000s. There isn't much you can do to improve safety on an offshore powerboat, hitting water at 150mph+ is exactly like hitting concrete so the best you can do is make sure that the pilots are contained in a cell that floats long enough for support crew to retrieve them. It's a similar approach to fireproof suits in racecars, you can't entirely prevent possibility of a car catching fire but the suit will mitigate damage for long enough for marshals to tackle the fire or extract the driver. The boats are extremely strong and every component gets the belt and braces treatment to ensure strength but that's more to ensure nothing falls off while smashing against the sea, if it goes badly wrong then several hundred thousands worth of engines are heading to the sea bed never to be seen again and bits of the hull will be washing ashore for weeks to come

    • @ThePentosin
      @ThePentosin 5 лет назад +1

      Early 2000 offshore powerboat racing was dominated by Spirit of Norway. Class 1 offshore powerbat racing was limited to 2 engines and 920 or 850hp each. 4 engines and turboes sounds like something else, wonder what that could be?

      One reason the car engine in this vid is quieter than the boat is because the exhaust of all 12 cylinders feed into one pipe. This makes for less time between exhaust pulses and more even exhaust flow.

    • @bobroberts2371
      @bobroberts2371 5 лет назад

      John Meurer There was a now missing post speaking about exhaust sound. I am correct in that more cylinders in a single pipe are quieter, I've put enough modified exhaust systems together to know that. Less cylinders in a pipe = pulsed flow. More cylinders in a pipe = smoother flow, less change in over all pressure. Do some research on H and X pipes for dual exhaust systems.
      On the Motor Trend On Demand site, under Hot Rod, have a look at Engine Masters Season 2 Episode 22 , Straight exhaust Vs H pipe Vs X pipe. 9:03- 9:35 sound of X pipe / smoothing of pulses, 14:20 speaks of DB readings for all 3 and yes 1 DB is a lot of change. While this does not speak to all cylinders in a single pipe, it does speak to smoothing out pulses by mixing in more cylinders.

    I mean to have the first Lamborghini engine fully restored correctly is just amazing to me. So much time goes into research and sourcing parts etc. I don’t think most people understand and appreciate the amount of time it takes. Realy something special to look at and hear running again!!
    Then to have it in Jays garage, couldn’t have been better. Andrew is so knowledgeable and genuinely a car guy and of course Jay is the kind of guy you don’t want to stop talking. Robs engine also looked and sounded awesome. Thanks for your hard work Andrew and can’t wait to see it in the chassis.

      I like the Gremlin based ride. Gremlin was the first car I drove legally. Since then have had many muscle, pro strt, tube chassis, and foreign performance rides. 1of my favorite is a 70 AMX with a 401/480 cu in heavily mod AMC motor. Did tube chassis using a 2x4 and one paint stir stick in front of rocker and 2x4 with 2stir sticks to have body at ride/drive height. Built full car in 1&1/2 car garage except for motor machine work and welding of block and heads so could run 19 to 1 compression. It cackeld really nice. I also showed and trophied at shows. Top 10" S finishes
      When called up to receive one of special awards, they made 2comments about auto.
      1 we want to thank the owner of this ride for the neighborhood and WIDE SURROUNDING AREA it's early wake up call this morning.
      2 we would like to see th40 blwn injected Willy's and this ride line up and run. The Willy's owner told me NO ! He did not want to be embarrassed by my AMX.
      I should add that this show was in a combination residential and commercial area in suburban Detroit.
      Yes in the D we do like them loud and insanely fast.
      Best et for AMX was 6.30@179

    As a grandpa who started reading Road & Track in the late 60s, I am very thankful the Jay Leno made some serious coin so he could make these awesome videos. Four of my grandchildren received gift subscriptions from Gramps. My oldest son is a factory certified BMW mechanic who has treated dad to some awesome rides. He has made sure his mother and daughters have BMW rides. Second son (a VW diesel specialist) and his sons enjoy their "sleeper" VW rides. (The only thing stock is their outer appearance.) Again, Thanks Jay

    This is quite a treat to see! It’s not everyday we see this kind of automotive history. Great to see friends from Lamborghini Club of America enjoying the passion here with Jay!
    I believe this is an excellent example that shows just how much work goes into a restoration project. And this just being a small part of the process. As Andrew’s project continues to comes together, not only will this car be admired by many but it will also be a beautiful documentation for those who enjoy the history of such things. Many people might see special car at an events or crossing the stage at auctions on TV but not to many know or take into consideration the amount of effort it takes. The digging up the history and doing the homework, It’s an essential factor in preservation and can take a very long time to complete. You guys did a great job in speaking of those points, the mounting block included. How cool! Even the custom stand has some historical value added! Did not know that.
    Excellent discussions from all 3 of you! Thank you guys for sharing this! Lamborghini history is here to stay!

    Que Bella! Jay says something about the 4 valve being Lamborghini's version of the Hemi; I came to that conclusion as well and designed a badge with the Lamborghini font that said "Hemi" for my Countach QV, but never had it made. For cooling the exhaust, it's the conductivity of metal that brings the engine temperature down. Less heat transfers forward. Works of art! I love the display stands! Never liked the side mounted webers; so glad my QV had them on top like the marine engine. A great trick to long term storage (avoiding cylinder rust) is using a polarized oil that magnetically adheres to the cylinder walls. I use Redline exclusively. Awesome video!!!!!

    My Dad used to race smaller chassis, inland type boats in ODBA. Crazy to think most of the boats were around or less weight than that 8LV12. Without an engine, the lightest carbon kevlar hull weighed just over 670 lbs. Add the seat, linkage, engine and lower unit and were still less than 1000 lbs. Power output generally speaking was ~500Hp but 2-stroke and revving to 11,800 RPM.

    According to the great source wikipedia, you could get the marine L804 in the LM002. But it was only 7.2 liters.

    Only my two cents
    I believe the water injection into the exhaust was a spark arrestor as well as to cool the exhaust pipes
    We were in a olds 455 powered flat bottom boat and it had a valve on the exhaust to turn on and off the water supply to the exhaust
    Holy cows when the water was turned off the heat from the headers was unbelievably more
    It was a testament as to how much the water brought down the exhaust system temperature

    I was in a yacht marina in the UK about 20 years ago and we moored up on a pontoon next to an offshore power boat. The rear hood was up and the mechanic was working on it..... It had TWO Lambo 8.0 litre V12s. the sound they made was amazing. 120mph boat on a flat sea.

    Something we don't see on engines these days...instead than the now-standard layout of exhaust pipes to the outside of the engine, carbs/intake manifolds in the V, and spark plugs between the cam shafts, the old 3500 engine has the intake manifolds bolting on between the cams, and the spark plugs in the V. There's a great shot of this at 1:58

    Lamborghini had a Riva motorboat with twin Lamborghini V12s in the hull.
    It was restored a few years back and the article was in Octane.
    It was an interesting article and the boat is beautiful too.

    Great engines, I have a Berkley jet boat, the water cools the engine and acts as a sound dampening in the exhaust ( water cylincer / moufler. When in the water you can distinctly hear the difference with and without water.
