How I Keep a Pristine Low Tech Aquascape

  • Many of you have been requesting videos on tank maintenance. Here's one! This is typically something I reserve for off the camera so I can focus on what I'm doing. Hopefully, this gives some insight into how I keep what I consider to be a pristine tank.
My best advice to spend time with your tank and discover what it takes to keep it clean. The level of maintenance required is drastically different from tank to tank and changes over time as the tank matures. I'd say that most mature/stable tanks are far easier to look after than new ones.
Let me know if you like this sort of video. If so, I'm definitely open to doing more in the future for other enclosures I have in the animal room. Also, if you missed the original build video, be sure to check out the below video!

Your channel has inspired me to make my very own terrarium! Thank you for your channel and all your helpful videos ! I do have a couple questions that would really help my out with my terrarium project. I understand you can make a closed terrarium that needs very little to no maintenance. I am attempting to make a coffee table with a closed terrarium in the table itself. I will be making it air tight and have a florescent light cycle built into the table. I'm not sure if this is possible due to the size of the terrarium. So I guess what I'm asking is, if I make a closed terrarium in a big glass box inside a table instead of a jar, will it have the same effect? Or will I need to add air holes? And if I need air holes what maintenance would be required? Thank u for you help!

I don't even think it's practical if you have a lot of tanks. CO2 = faster growth, which equates to more maintenance.

Your choise of music and keeping it down when you speak is very helpfull when one has (some minor) hearing problems. Somehow your videos are both zenlike - and intresting and informative. Significant to a true teacher. Your love for the work shows. Some of my tanks get stuck with it for awhile. Often times, a single plant brings it in and ruins the whole system. It thrives from an imbalance, such as light to nutrient levels. You just have to pin point the source and dial in the tank until you hardly notice it.

Just my tank is smaller, without mechanical filtration (total silence next to the tank is fantastic), but it require 1 - 1,5 week water change (about 30%). I was wondering, do you have any reccomendations as to how to keep a bucket filter running in a bedroom? My tanks are so darn noisy and I have tried everything; vaseline on the impeller, made sure the tubing isn't vibrating against anything, installed soundproof matts in the cabinets and styrofoam under the filter. Still hear that annoying buzzing sound. Am I to give up? 🙈 halp lol

What dechlorinator are you using that is allowing to do instant water changes. Does it affect tank life at all (fish, bacteria, etc).
