  • US Navy Fighter Squadron 211 (VF-211) Fighting Checkmates was the new designation given to Fighter Squadron 24 (VF-24) on March 9th, 1959. It traded its F-11F Tigers for F-8 Crusaders in July of that year. In 1961 VF-211 moved to NAS Miramar, which remained its home-base for the next 35 years. The Fighting Checkmates deployed to Vietnam seven times aboard the USS Hancock and once aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard. During this period, VF-211 pilots earned the title of "The MiG Killers," having downed eight enemy aircraft. The squadron transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat in 1975 and has been flying the F-18F Super Hornet since 2005.
Produced by Century Wings in 1:72 diecast this is a fantastic representation of one of VF-211's aircraft. This is the Vought F-8E Crusader from the US Navy VF-211 Fighting Checkmates, NP100, whilst aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard, Vietnam in 1967. With a limited 3000 pieces made, this makes it a must have for any Century Wings collector.

Use of any images or video in any of my reviews is used out of pure respect in regard to units and/or actual people. I wish to acknowledge all those that have served past and present with their respective nations armed forces with some making the ultimate sacrifice. Political ideals aside, it takes great courage and selflessness to answer your countries call.
Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.
    Cheers

My ship patrolled the coast of south Vietnam in 1965 and during that time I observed some F-8 Crusader launches. In 1967 I worked on the flight line of LTV Aerospace troubleshooting countermeasures systems. There were F-8s in a mod program to update avionics systems.
In the mid-1950s I was a Civil Air Patrol cadet and had the opportunity to visit the Chance Vought plant and see a new F-8 under construction in the plant.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. It would have been amazing to see these aircraft in action!! It also would have been an eye opener to see the factory where these were constructed. You certainly have had some great experiences. Thank you for sharing them with me and for watching the video. I appreciate both 🙂👍

Thank you 🙂 I do buy alot of models that myself personally don't care for, but I know others will. I mean take the Queens flight helicopter...I would never have bought that for myself normally, but I got it at a really good price and I know I have a reasonably sized English viewer base which it may interest so bam it was mine, haha. I do try and get the ones I'm not a huge fan of for as cheap as I can, haha. I have (insanely) set myself a goal to try and get as close to one of every aircraft used militarily by nations around the world since military aviation was created. You will notice the aircraft I do like alot, they are the ones which are usually bought more than once, haha. For me I am a big fan of WW2 German aircraft and Modern US jet aircraft. My collecting has just snow balled from there 🤣. The great thing about deciding to do the youtube thing is the chance to help others see what out there and have a chat to fellow collectors. As I always say I am not an expert, just an average bloke that like to collect stuff and if the videos help others to choose whether they want one too then for me that's the videos job done. Whether it get 1 view or 10,000 views I'm not fussed as long as 1 person gets some use out of it. Geez i can waffle on...better wind this reply up,haha. Thanks again for watching and comment mate, I appreciate it 😀👍

Yeah man this is a great build. I really enjoyed this one. I have heard Century Wings has had some QC issues with newer releases, but all the ones I've opened so far have been mint. The Calibre Wings Tomcats are awesome, they do have some ordnance fitment issues sometimes, just need patience and don't put one together when your already mad at something, haha. Thanks as always for dropping past mate, I really appreciate it 😀👍

Last of the "gunfighters"!!! My uncle flew one of these in Vietnam. Off the deck of the USS Midway. As always salute from a soldier.

These things would have been scary to land on a carrier for sure. Such a handle full, your uncle just have some awesome stuck skills. I couldn't imagine anything harder than landing on a floating deck 😯. This model is a really nice build too. Thanks for watching 😀

This one is such an ugly MF aircraft... that it makes me want to have one! The model itself looks as it's in the same league of execution as HM - quite nice. Great & detailed review. Cheers!

Who doesn't love ugly 🤣 if there's wasn't love for the ugly things I wouldnt have 2 kids 🤣 but seriously this is a really tight model, it's well present and century wings haven't let me down so far. Although a tad on the higher price range they can be well worth it. Thanks as always for dropping past to check out the video and comment 😀👍
