I am with you. As an Indonesian and in my opinion, Garuda has been downgraded compared to several years before, and I think that is part of their cost optimization. Meanwhile, I also believe Garuda has plans to enhance their customers experiences. The one step forward is that they already received 2/5 737-800NG ex-Oman Air, which I guess had better seats and IFE than existing GA Narowbody fleets.
Their 3rd out of 5 737s is going to be an ex-China Airlines unit with no IFE sadly. However on the ex-Oman Air planes had a BYOD system, so expect to also see those in PK-GUD. As for where they source the final 2 who knows, They could snag up 1 more ex-Oman Air unit.

Sadly. When it comes to inter Indonesia flights, you don’t have much options though. Garuda is still the best, compared to the more dominant Lion Air group. AirAsia is trying to catch up, but they are being bullied out of the country. There are new airlines in the last few years, but there are still small compared Lion Air and Garuda.

The only garuda plane I can tolerate is the super diamond configuration, and they only have 4 of them. My last flight with garuda was also dps-cgk and got lucky with the A330 super diamond configuration. The legroom is no joke. Also, their meals in 2019 was so bad I never bothered to touch them. It is better nowadays.
I totally feel your pain with the window seat assignment. I once had an aircraft change from an A330 to another A330. Of course, my seat assignment was reset and I was put in the middle section. Unfortunately at check in the agent was so clueless she was getting a single aisle aircraft assignment (my next flight) mixed up with this twin aisle plane. And yes, I NEED a window seat and not the windowless one!

I had a similar experience on a PAL domestic flight about 2 years ago. Boarded a hot plane (A320), pushed back and then they couldn’t start the engines. Went back to the gate and stayed onboard while they tried to fix it. Pushed back again and spent another hour sat there with no aircon. It was 32C outside but a lot hotter inside. It got to the stage where a couple of male passengers got up and approached the cockpit as a woman had fainted from the heat. Before things got totally out of hand they went back to the gate and offloaded us all. After another hour we all reboarded the same plane and took off.
Quite frankly it was a lot deeper than I was expecting lol. It’s such a strange dynamic in my mind for such a large (in many ways) country to have such a weak flag carrier. I remember back in the early days of trip reports admiring the beautiful black serving plates they used in First Class- they truly were some of the best for a while. Hopefully, they can find their way again. Thank you as always for the support 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Garuda is poorly managed and only being used as government's ATM machine. they manage to have a great net loss and still being accused of polishing their books. i agree their service is great before the "corruption scandal" but with budget cut and more eyes watching closely to them, they dont know how to do anything right and efficient if not poured with money. sorry english is not my first language

Great review as always - Having just experienced that route ( originally an A330 then a 737 then an airlink A320 then back to the A330) on a very full flight , connecting with QR. The crew were all very friendly, the meal , I skipped but nowadays I get quite anxious with the immigration process and the military’s presence - maybe I’m over reacting anyway thanks
I needed to go to Indonesia many times over a four year period. My company did handstands to avoid using Garuda due to safety concerns. The really scary thing is Indonesia has a whole bunch of regional airlines which a even more dodgy than Garuda.
Now I avoid fly with Gatuda since I have dissapointed experinces both in bussines and economy class. Garuda change my flight from Bali to Jakarta with 3 hours ahead with only SMS notification. Unfortunately I’m already in the airport at that time. The F&B for business class is worse than F&B in economy class in another 5 stars flight. The food in the lounge even worst. I want my Garuda just like 6-7 years ago when everything is perfect. Now Garuda has the most expensive price ticket in the world which is not inline with the services!
We fly SUB-DPS a lot and Lion Air is our goto...because you get a transport to the plane and walk up the gang plank...i love the smell of aviation fuel in the morning!
I have a flight booked with Garuda Indonesia on the Airbus A330-300 on December flying from Sydney to Jakarta and back in January. Suffice to say, despite winning World's Best Cabin Crew, Garuda Indonesia has a lot to improve, not just on the cabin product, but its fleet too. A decade ago, this airline used to be 5-star and, at one point, is the world's best regional airline and world's best economy class. Though Garuda is still the best airline (in Indonesia), they're not world class anymore. Makes me wonder if they'll ever catch up with the competition in the short and medium-term. 😕
Aside from other GA shenanigans, they're usually actually pretty on time except for DPS routes, which schedules are pretty f'ed up for any airline due to their runway congestion. DPS really one of the busiest single runway airport at the time and if you're even more unluckier you can be in takeoff queue in the taxiway for almost an hour or more. Traffic optimizations are really needed in DPS
Great review. Bonus points for covering the trip to the airport, the corporate affairs/Sopranos stuff, and wheeling-out the under-used 'faff'. 28"? Yeah - brutal. Attractive livery - but I wouldn't want to be the person painting it.
I’ve always loved Garuda since , as a kid in the early 70s, I flew with my father from Jakarta. Halim to DPS in a DC-9. Boarding up the rear stairs then seated to find scented de humidifying fog pouring out of the air vents. Dad said not to worry unless it continues in the air. Ok! Unfortunately Garuda has been hit by low cost at the bottom and SIA at the top to cruel their business. Hopefully that will change. Another great review. Many thanks.

Garuda used to be so good, but now its just… there. Its weird that they still charge upwards the most expensive fare and fly largely empty planes when they are clearly bleeding money. If not for the cabin crew, there’s not really a lot of nice things to say about GA at the moment.
I can share the frustration you have with Garuda Indonesia being an Indonesian avgeek. I myself am really disappointed with how they really seem to mess everything up especially after they seem to be able to improve quite significantly in the 2010s. I now always try to avoid Garuda if possible especially om internstional flights. And I really love the research that you did on Garuda. Explains everything and gives a perfect insight to how the airline is doing👍
someone at Garuda probably saw Thai and SQ and said "hmm, how can we be different" and the best thing they came up with was scandals and corruption xD. the comment about leaving canggu got me, spoken like a true canggu native haha.
As Indonesian, I'm also think that Garuda Indonesia flight experience were at Ok at best, is kinda weird knowing their good track record in the past plummeted rapidly, even most Indonesian people now Practically prefer Singapore Airlines if the price is similar. As for ARJ/Comac aircraft purchase, I don't know the complete details, but as for now, only Transnusa and not garuda that order ARJ/Comac.
Amazing I booked my flight to Bali from Jakarta yesterday I was wondering if spending the extra money for garuda was worth it? I paid £45 for my Trans Nusa flight while garuda wanted £90. After watching your video I'm confident I made the right choice. You alter mention about the other competition on the route Air Asia, super air jet, citi link and trans Nusa, all fly Bali to Jakarta.
Good luck flying Trans Nusa. Hope you have a good flight. Even though their domestic flights are mediocre, I will only fly Garuda within Indonesia. I don't trust any of the other Indonesian airlines. I have read too many horror stories about the other Indonesian airlines. Many Indonesians think Trans Nusa is Indonesia's worst airline.

i know Garuda downgrade their service, im upset too from my last flight with them from sydney to denpasar, my 2016 experienced flight with Garuda was so awsome...lots of snack, ice cream and delicious meals and even my daughter got some toys plush. then recent flight getting worse and worse. but Garuda still way better than Qantas so i will still choose Garuda for my flight from sydney to denpasar.
The same could be asked about Air India in the other direction. The answer, in my experience living in the region is: Indonesia (aside from Bali) has a relatively narrow focus of international relations and Garuda's network reflects that. Another example is Vietnam & Indonesia- both members of ASEAN and less than 3 hours flight from each other and even they didn't have more than 1 direct flight per day until a few years ago. The other reason has a lot to do with well off Indonesians simply prefering to fly SQ, which has a massive feeder presence in Jakarta.
mhm 55 minutes stationary with AC off? 🤔🤔 I highly doubt that. probably the APU was malfunctioning and they had to use external AC unit, which is never as good as the APU, especially in the hot temperatures in Bali, but it is supplied by Gapura (the airport authority), so the airlines does not have any influence in the quality of the external AC unit. This problem is fairly common all around the world, and I have experienced it in many countries outside of Indonesia. Being a A330 pilot for Garuda myself, all things considered, I would still like to apologize for your inconvenience and I surely hope you will catch a better flight with us in the future. I personally think you had just bad luck on this particular flight with the APU malfunctioning and you would have a completely different experience on an other flight with us.
but surely it did not take 55 minutes after pushback for you to taxi right? Bali has only one taxiway, they would have completely halted all airport traffic and ATC would surely not allow that. As for why there was no airflow for probably around 5 minutes after pushback, it's because in case of a malfunction of the APU we have to do a crossbleed start. It's where the starting engine receives bleed air from the already started engine (one engine is started at the gate). For this procedure the AC unfortunately has to be off, otherwise the engine won't start. That is the procedure prescribed by the manufacturer. Hope those explanations could somehow make you understand the situation more. There is always more than what meets the eye. I really hope you give our product another try in the future, I especially would recommend AMS-CGK flight in business class on the 777, or maybe on any of our A330 NEO flight. I would love to be your pilot if you ever get the chance to fly on our A330.
Not sure why you think I would need to lie- I don't mislead or create drama like many channels. I take 80-100 flights per year- I know it's quite normal for the airflow to stop for some minutes- this was not 'some minutes'. All of my timings, including the 55 minutes of inactivity, are backed up with time stamped videos and photos. I'll leave it at that.
Alright then, that is quite unfortunate then, in my 10 years of flying the most I have waited after pushback is 5 minutes before ATC asked what is up and giving the instructions to go back to the gate to let other traffic pass, especially in bali, where, as I said, there is only one taxiway, which is a design flaw. Not even close. Read the US travel blogs about domestic flights in the US. lol. I've flown on the CGk_DPS flght on Garuda many times. All mediocre flights but not as bad as many domestic US flights.
I have the same problem with them, I bought the tickets and picked Boeing 777 and 3 days before flight they change my aircraft without notification, good thing I always checking my flight and I found it, I called them and find another flight with Boeing 777, their service very standard nothing special for my business class I just bought
Garuda is fine. One bad mediocre flight does not represent quality in general. It is still better than European and American carriers. In fact, United, Delta, American Airlines, JetBlue, and Southwest make Garuda Indonesia look like the Rolls Royce of airlines.
They still owe thousands of Australians millions of dollars from cancelled flights during COVID... I have sent them over 50 emails by now from 2020 when they cancelled our flights due to COVID. Nothing but...we will get back to you....
Well frankly those thousands of people should have long ago disputed the charges with their credit card companies. “Services not rendered” and/or “failure to provide product” are the two easiest and most straightforward dispute routes there are.
I think this assessment is wrong, because anyone who flies with Garuda will get the best flying experience with typical Indonesian service and the friendliest flight attendants in the world from 2014 until now, no one can match the unique way they treat their passengers. These unfair reviews degrade the flip flop channel and make many Indonesians disappointed and no longer believe these unobjective reviews. Bias opinion ! 🎉🎉🎉

there’s no GOOD full service airline in Indonesia even Garuda Indonesia is not one of them you better fly semi full service (if i can mention :) such as Pelita Air, Batik Air or the newest Super Air Jet by Lion. with their new aircraft, they are more comfort and better experience compare to GA. Garuda has a complicated problems until now and they still manage to solved it. NOT WORTHY with their expensive fares with their service. maybe later if they already solved and help by the government and making profit (which is i don’t know when) then GARUDA might be bounce back to the better way of service.

Aside from other GA shenanigans, they're usually actually pretty on time except for DPS routes, which schedules are pretty f'ed up for any airline due to their runway congestion. DPS really one of the busiest single runway airport at the time and if you're even more unluckier you can be in takeoff queue in the taxiway for almost an hour or more. Traffic optimizations are really needed in DPS
Garuda is indeed a great airlines despite it's past issues.

I’ve always loved Garuda since , as a kid in the early 70s, I flew with my father from Jakarta. Halim to DPS in a DC-9. Boarding up the rear stairs then seated to find scented de humidifying fog pouring out of the air vents. Dad said not to worry unless it continues in the air. Ok!
Unfortunately Garuda has been hit by low cost at the bottom and SIA at the top to cruel their business. Hopefully that will change. Another great review. Many thanks.

Garuda used to be so good, but now its just… there. Its weird that they still charge upwards the most expensive fare and fly largely empty planes when they are clearly bleeding money. If not for the cabin crew, there’s not really a lot of nice things to say about GA at the moment.

I can share the frustration you have with Garuda Indonesia being an Indonesian avgeek. I myself am really disappointed with how they really seem to mess everything up especially after they seem to be able to improve quite significantly in the 2010s. I now always try to avoid Garuda if possible especially om internstional flights. And I really love the research that you did on Garuda. Explains everything and gives a perfect insight to how the airline is doing👍

someone at Garuda probably saw Thai and SQ and said "hmm, how can we be different" and the best thing they came up with was scandals and corruption xD. the comment about leaving canggu got me, spoken like a true canggu native haha.
As Indonesian, I'm also think that Garuda Indonesia flight experience were at Ok at best, is kinda weird knowing their good track record in the past plummeted rapidly, even most Indonesian people now Practically prefer Singapore Airlines if the price is similar.
As for ARJ/Comac aircraft purchase, I don't know the complete details, but as for now, only Transnusa and not garuda that order ARJ/Comac.

Amazing I booked my flight to Bali from Jakarta yesterday I was wondering if spending the extra money for garuda was worth it? I paid £45 for my Trans Nusa flight while garuda wanted £90. After watching your video I'm confident I made the right choice. You alter mention about the other competition on the route Air Asia, super air jet, citi link and trans Nusa, all fly Bali to Jakarta.
Good luck flying Trans Nusa. Hope you have a good flight. Even though their domestic flights are mediocre, I will only fly Garuda within Indonesia. I don't trust any of the other Indonesian airlines. I have read too many horror stories about the other Indonesian airlines. Many Indonesians think Trans Nusa is Indonesia's worst airline.

i know Garuda downgrade their service, im upset too from my last flight with them from sydney to denpasar, my 2016 experienced flight with Garuda was so awsome...lots of snack, ice cream and delicious meals and even my daughter got some toys plush. then recent flight getting worse and worse. but Garuda still way better than Qantas so i will still choose Garuda for my flight from sydney to denpasar.

They did jakarta- bangkok- mumbai and denpasar- mumbai but it got temporarily closed cause of covid, probably will be opened soon
The same could be asked about Air India in the other direction. The answer, in my experience living in the region is: Indonesia (aside from Bali) has a relatively narrow focus of international relations and Garuda's network reflects that. Another example is Vietnam & Indonesia- both members of ASEAN and less than 3 hours flight from each other and even they didn't have more than 1 direct flight per day until a few years ago.
The other reason has a lot to do with well off Indonesians simply prefering to fly SQ, which has a massive feeder presence in Jakarta.

mhm 55 minutes stationary with AC off? 🤔🤔 I highly doubt that.
probably the APU was malfunctioning and they had to use external AC unit, which is never as good as the APU, especially in the hot temperatures in Bali, but it is supplied by Gapura (the airport authority), so the airlines does not have any influence in the quality of the external AC unit.
This problem is fairly common all around the world, and I have experienced it in many countries outside of Indonesia.
Being a A330 pilot for Garuda myself, all things considered, I would still like to apologize for your inconvenience and I surely hope you will catch a better flight with us in the future.
I personally think you had just bad luck on this particular flight with the APU malfunctioning and you would have a completely different experience on an other flight with us.
The delay was after pushback and prior to taxi. I assure you, there was zero airflow.
but surely it did not take 55 minutes after pushback for you to taxi right?
Bali has only one taxiway, they would have completely halted all airport traffic and ATC would surely not allow that.
As for why there was no airflow for probably around 5 minutes after pushback, it's because in case of a malfunction of the APU we have to do a crossbleed start. It's where the starting engine receives bleed air from the already started engine (one engine is started at the gate).
For this procedure the AC unfortunately has to be off, otherwise the engine won't start. That is the procedure prescribed by the manufacturer.
Hope those explanations could somehow make you understand the situation more. There is always more than what meets the eye.
I really hope you give our product another try in the future, I especially would recommend AMS-CGK flight in business class on the 777, or maybe on any of our A330 NEO flight.
I would love to be your pilot if you ever get the chance to fly on our A330.
Not sure why you think I would need to lie- I don't mislead or create drama like many channels. I take 80-100 flights per year- I know it's quite normal for the airflow to stop for some minutes- this was not 'some minutes'. All of my timings, including the 55 minutes of inactivity, are backed up with time stamped videos and photos. I'll leave it at that.
Alright then, that is quite unfortunate then, in my 10 years of flying the most I have waited after pushback is 5 minutes before ATC asked what is up and giving the instructions to go back to the gate to let other traffic pass, especially in bali, where, as I said, there is only one taxiway, which is a design flaw.
I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you and I hope you will not have such an experience again in the future 😊😊

Not even close. Read the US travel blogs about domestic flights in the US. lol. I've flown on the CGk_DPS flght on Garuda many times. All mediocre flights but not as bad as many domestic US flights.

I have the same problem with them, I bought the tickets and picked Boeing 777 and 3 days before flight they change my aircraft without notification, good thing I always checking my flight and I found it, I called them and find another flight with Boeing 777, their service very standard nothing special for my business class I just bought

Garuda is fine. One bad mediocre flight does not represent quality in general. It is still better than European and American carriers. In fact, United, Delta, American Airlines, JetBlue, and Southwest make Garuda Indonesia look like the Rolls Royce of airlines.
That’s precisely why it’s called a Trip Report and not an Airline Review.
They still owe thousands of Australians millions of dollars from cancelled flights during COVID... I have sent them over 50 emails by now from 2020 when they cancelled our flights due to COVID. Nothing but...we will get back to you....
Well frankly those thousands of people should have long ago disputed the charges with their credit card companies. “Services not rendered” and/or “failure to provide product” are the two easiest and most straightforward dispute routes there are.
I think this assessment is wrong, because anyone who flies with Garuda will get the best flying experience with typical Indonesian service and the friendliest flight attendants in the world from 2014 until now, no one can match the unique way they treat their passengers.
These unfair reviews degrade the flip flop channel and make many Indonesians disappointed and no longer believe these unobjective reviews. Bias opinion !

there’s no GOOD full service airline in Indonesia even Garuda Indonesia is not one of them you better fly semi full service (if i can mention :) such as Pelita Air, Batik Air or the newest Super Air Jet by Lion. with their new aircraft, they are more
comfort and better experience compare to GA. Garuda has a complicated problems until now and they still manage to solved it. NOT WORTHY with their expensive fares with their service. maybe later if they already solved and help by the government and making profit (which is i don’t know when) then GARUDA might be bounce back to the better way of service.

The president and CEO recently shared that the People's Representative Council had asked for BUSINESS CLASS seats for their pilgrimage to Mecca despite the airlines’ financial trouble being public knowledge😑 I’d imagine there would be a public outcry in any other sensible country, but sadly there are just too many other things on our people’s minds to distract them.
Of course, we’re talking about the very same people who voted for these crooks, so we really got no one else to blame but ourselves. 🔪
