I had the pleasure to have a masterclass with Johan de Meij, where we played the Continental Overture, and he explained that the overture functioned as a study piece for this symphony. There's a lot of material, other than just the hymn, that's transported from the overture to the symphony.
My children's choir sang this and I still think its the most epic song ever ^_^
