  • Hey sailors,
Today I am exposing cruise ship secrets that I have never been told before. There is a huge mafia culture on board cruise ships and honestly, as a crew member you can only get things done through the mafia in this video I'm explaining how it works.

As a passenger, if you upset the Mafia, you can end up having a terrible cruise. I've seen it firsthand. This passenger really was very rude to a bar staff...like really rude in front of other staff and guests. He then started to notice that his drinks were taking a long time to arrive. He had trouble getting room service. He was delayed with his disembarkation. So yes it can happen. So as you should, be polite and friendly to all staff and have a great cruise.

I had a part time job with a major airline for 25 years for the travel business. It was not my main business. Where I worked was dominated by Filipinos. I went out of my way to learn a lot of Tagalog and its variations, since most of my Filipino co-workers were from a particular island. Even though I am of Irish descent I was accepted into their "mafia" and reaped numerous benefits. It did not hurt that in my main profession I am a tax lawyer and I did many favors for them in return. I was invited to family events where I was the only white guy and grew to love Filipino food. I considered it a privilege to be accepted into their community.

My favorite server was amazing. He spoke 7 languages, had a Ph.D. in his country, etc. (ultimately left the cruise line to work for NATO). He always had top reviews from guests. But....he said that he couldn't get promoted because you had to be one of two nationalities to bet promoted. In fairness, he didn't "play" with the crew when off duty. He slept. His team loved him, and EVERY assistant he worked with was promoted to server by our next cruise because he trained them so well. But he was stuck in his position for many years until he'd finally had enough. You can sometimes see benefits from the "mafia" even as a guest. For example, if you do something special for a crew member, you may find his "friends" looking out for you. In one case. a server came up with some flowers which he presented to my daughter saying that "your husband said to give you these." She was quite confused until she saw the crew member that she had spent some time with the day before--he told her he was trying to improve his English so he could get a customer facing position, so they spent a few minutes talking while he was doing a repair job in our cabin. NOTHING untoward--I was in the cabin with them, etc. It was just sweet that he found a way to say "thanks."

As someone that worked in broadcast on norwegen cruise line. I was able to barder with having all the movies and able to switch tvs in your cabin to a bigger TV in your cabin. I was able to get anything I wanted from food to getting the free wifi password on the ship. But I was one of the few Americans in deep with the 🇵🇭 mafia.
This broght me back to good times.
    Thank you

Lucy...First and foremost, you are amazing in front of a camera and I know this because I love to watch your videos and I have NO desire to work on a cruise ship. Second, I hope you didn't get yourself into trouble by outing the Cruise Ship Mafias...I Third, if and when I do go on a cruise, I hope I can talk my wife into going onto a Virgin cruise because you truly champion their commitment to keeping crew happy and treated like individuals. Keep up the great work.

I don't think I would feel comfortable as a passenger, to know that the crew is not treated well or under a mafia; I rather don't go. This mafia issue is illegal and unethical; I think that the entire mafia should be fired or reported to the authorities.

Thanks for this Lucy - it had never occurred to me that onboard Mafias or cliques might exist, but it seems pretty obvious now. I'm guessing that its pretty important to get on with a cabin mate who's in with a given Mafia, because if you don't, your onboard life's going to be pretty miserable?

I had friends in high places onboard. The supervisor of my onboard-gf hated her and relocated her to share cabin with her nemesis bully, on purpose. My gf was crying and feeling really bad that day. I brought it to the attention of my friends: HRM, CD, HD, FBM and even the Staff captain. My gf got her own single cabin the same day, even though she was in facilities. The next day her supervisor got called up to HRM and god knows who else was there. She got a final warning in writing. After that, she would not look me in the eyes for the remainder of my contract - she was terrified to even say a single word to me.
Another story: a new hire insulted the security staff, and gave them attitude because she had to go through the X-ray check. The security supervisor gave her a tour around the ship, showed her to the crew bar and whatnot. On that very same evening, when the crew bar closed for the night, there was a team of security waiting at the exit. Everyone just passed by... except her. Breathalyzer test. She got fired on her very first day on the ship.
So yes... I can confirm there is mafia onboard.

Sounds like a toxic work environment. There are ways to get revenge on “ mafia members”. However if you work on a cruise ship your focus should be on your own life. It’s folly to get wrapped up in the pettiness of life. You are on that boat to work and make money first and foremost. If you have a lover and get laid once a while that’s a bonus. Probably best to remain a free agent.

All true. Same thing for staff at golf clubs or country clubs. Consider what happens on a fishing boat, where if you irritate enough people badly enough, you might just get pitched into the ocean (and not get retrieved). In general, the cleaning/maintenance/food/security staff in just about any environment can make your life wonderful or make it hell (and on a ship that goes for crew as well as passengers).

A lot of what your saying is each department only help each other out because there in the “mafia” please girl it’s called helping each other out, every department knows if you help each other you get what you need when needed. STOP the scare my mungering.
