nah cap, if you actually do research it was the sheer amount of extremist content around. Hell alot of people still think its pewdiepies fault for the bridge incident. It was literally because you could find political extremist terrorist organizations making recruit videos.
Nothing to do with youtubers doing dumb stuff at all. Try again.
Despite everything bad that happened in the 2000s & 2010s nothing has been more trippy than the 2020s so far. It feels like every year since the start of the decade something breaks and the quality of life decreases very noticeably.

The pre-social media era of internet was unmatched, back when there were actual websites, and online communities. Social media has its positive aspects, but it also killed the creativity of the early internet.
The problem is this era is hard to research, because a lot of niche websites are dead with hardly no data on Wayback Machine
You think so? I feel like the early internet was more creative, because back then everyone was a product of their environment. nowadays everyone gets their style and language from the same sources.

Eh that's subjective in all honesty. I remember the mid 2000s (born in 1993).
2016 was the year memes really went batshit crazy and goofy. 2020 amplified it's craziness
*You used the word*
"goofy", thats 2022-2023 for you
2017 was kinda the begining of the ironic era or memes
2016 is also where clickbait starts to became a problem, along side Elsagate and the wth that is flexing culture.
As much as I have several memes that I've loved from '16 till now, 2007-13 memes/YTPs is the superior era imo
@just so 2018/19 were really solid although that might be due to 2020 making everything great in comparison.
12:08 being rated worse the CUTIES is absolutely insane. If that happens to me I would hide in a bunker cut off from any internet or human interaction for the rest of my life.
Its only cause weird ass people exist to make the movie a 3.6/10 of Thanos snapped those people Hype Hours would have more.
This isn't really an era, and instead more of a collective thing, but it's that moment when a new game reaches its popularity peak and children infest it's community. Happened to Among Us, happened to Friday Night Funkin', and with Pizza Tower's popularity rising more and more, it's likely this will soon happen to it as well.
not exactly related to those games specifically but i'd call this the "forced horror/analog horror era" with stuff like poppy, the backrooms, and glaggleland, when retard children infested it and tried to turn it into "oooh scary analog horror OOH SCARY SCARY JUMPSCARE" and all that. i feel especially bad for the backrooms + glaggleland because those were just harmless wacky memes at first that were fun to look through, but now we got the 9 year old Kinemaster FlipAClip kids turning it into VHS horror and shit.
@@wigwagstudios2474 I'd group the forced horror with the hornybait too, since they're both common techniques to lure in children for easy views
@@wigwagstudios2474The backrooms was always a fearmongering thing, I have been a member of that community since 2020. It was never funny memes. No, the memes came with the children, the backrooms used to be a few images of liminal spaces depicting empty, nostalgic places from the early 2000s. The backrooms was not ruined by children making it as you described. It was ruined because it became much too popular, with the introduction of “levels” and the absurd amount of enemies, along with the whole fucking thing being explained in detail, removing the mysterious vibe.
@@wigwagstudios2474One thing I forgot to mention, the backrooms isn’t an analog horror thing.

I couldn’t agree more. I’m from Italy so maybe things were a little different here, but I would say that era went approximately from 2015 to 2017.

i attribute middle school being the worst social experience of my life to the clout era of the internet and the effect it had on half concious kids.
Watching this made me realize that young people don't remember how raw the internet was in the early to mid 2000s before smartphones. Everything after that was pretty tame in comparison.
Literally just commented something similar. First time ive felt “old”
4chan was crazy
People used to get killed because of shit posted on the the net. 4chan and other forums would dox people, making randoms harass them and occasionally find and attack them, filming the shit. Gore and torture content was everywhere. Rape, incest and snuff porn was considered normal!! I remember when Facebook first came out I would see a beheading video on it like twice a week! 2 girls one cup, 1 guy one jar, pain olympics etc… and we wonder why the youth are getting softer and softer 😂 the internet traumatised a whole generation hahah
It was the wild west back then
2016 really was the last breath of the wild west era of the internet, but i think its probably for the better.
An era I was confused you didn't cover was "The Cancellation Era" (2019-present). It explains itself, but basically people would make fake accusations about people they don't like or find "cringy".
Examples of victims from this era were JellyBean (falsely accused of racism because PNGtuber), ChippleDipple (accused of grooming, revenge porn, and targeted harrasment because of his edgy humor), Sinder (because of her...of questionable quality CPR metal cover), Kwite (because he didn't like his ex's overly sexual behavior towards him), and Revie (falsely accused of grooming because she burnt someone's house in Minecraft).

@@yt.person_9629 2020 even
It tecnically started since a little after gamergate and people realized how much you can fuck someone's image if the average person doesn't like them
I think it’s because that era hasn’t ended yet. Plus cancellation isn’t really an “era”. It was just something that got super popular to do but fizzled out really quickly. The only people getting “canceled” anymore are people who are behaving intentionally provocative, and half the time they’re seeking that attention out themselves because it’s profitable (modern “comedians” using edgy humor to get people to complain about and advertise their work are good examples of this)
There are still cases like Kwite where people are falsely accused but that’s been happening forever. It’s not exclusive to cancel culture.

I'll admit I did grow up watching a lot of RUclips so I may have been somewhat influenced by these same communities but the videos that I remember watching were out of line from the synchronous insanity in this video and definitely more kid friendly which means I was on the good side of the internet. the WorldStar era reminds me of an episode of the boondocks about the racist sentiment proposed by the fight videos. the show called these fights "n-word moments". I got to witness one in-person at a fair. it was actually quite sad (no one got hurt tho). me friend and I were standing in line for food for over two hours. there was this friendly black man in front of us who would occasionally talk to us during the two hours. when we got to the front, this teenager cut in front of the guy and he was like "hey, get to the back of the line." the teen started to argue with the man and then the teen's mom came over and threatened to fight the guy. this guy didn't back down. it escalated to the point of security having to break it up (thankfully they did so in a non-violent way) and the man who waited for over 2 hours was told to leave with his son (but the teen and his family stayed). no punches were thrown fortunately and the man got his food, but it just made me very sad and angry that someone who stood up to some asshole kid was asked to leave.

Great video, but as you requested, I thought of 3 eras you didn't cover ( I think one might have been before your time, I'm nearly 32 so I remember a bit further back)
1. The let's play era, this preceded the 2016 edgy era, and a lot of the people in this era transitioned into the edgy era (you could probably put Pewdiepie in this category)
2. The pre-historic vlogging era (2008-2010), the videos were mostly just people using their webcams or video cameras set up on a tripod, all static shots inside the house where they would just talk to the camera about their day. They would sometimes also partner with out RUclipsrs and do video responses (so I guess it's also known as the Reply guy/girls era)
3. The angry reviewer era (2008 till about 2011), AVGN (james rolfe) set this one off, but there were a million imitations and people did angry reviews of other stuff too like movies and books
One of the example videos for the vlogging era he mentioned was in 2005

As someone who's been studying history, anthropology and stuff like that, i think you are really underestimating the effect the matrix era (or alpha male era, as i prefer to call it) is going to have in the future. The era is actually still going, and at full speed, and young men are terribly powerful in shaping civilization.
And oh gosh, is it BAAAAAAAAAD
Teaching men to be better !
@@christianhernandez1539 …is what they try to do. Instead, man, by his nature, is prone to receiving only what they want to hear, for better or for worse. They choose which advice to follow and which to disregard - it’s simply how we function. Sadly, most “redpillers” are just bluepilled misogynists receiving what they want to hear - women bad, men are ALWAYS faultless.
Btw, i don’t like when it’s hard to tell the difference between if someone is joking or genuinely believes what they say. Tate is not a comedian - if he was, he’d be a horrible comedian whose jokes always land like aa 11 (keep in mind the pilots were male). Tate is just another clout chaser, that’s it.
@@J3D1D14H Before the matrix era I did take the supposed redpill bro and not gonna lie what they tell you is true when it comes to woman advice but it does make you believe all woman are like that which is the down side to all that because it changes your perception about woman but I truly do believe that tate has done better overall than worse for men. And yes I get what your talking when it comes to jokes and clout.
@@christianhernandez1539 that’s because he gives other more reasonable opinions about other topics. E.g. “go gym” i think has actually been proven by studies to be effective in raising mental health. I can kinda see where his sparkling water rant and owning a sword rant would be a joke (except they’re horrible) but you can tell what he genuinely believes by listening to the tone of his voice and looking at his body gestures.
He does have a wholesome side. He has a good relationship with his brother and actually has a personality unlike those who copy him.
Hopefully he shows that side more - he failed to do so after his initial claim that he converted to islam.

I know this may not be an era but to me the Vine era was a hidden gem among the internet. At least that one was full of comedic people trying their best to make people laugh and have a better day. Vine was one of the better era's that is well, mostly forgotten by the masses.
Vine was unarguably one of the best eras of the internet, vine brought so many people together
@@KingBoner even so looking back on the old vines you realize just how cringey they were.
No Vine was cringe.
@@zacharygiles2984 todays standards definitely make vine look outdated
The Vine era was an amazing time. People just being funny and it wasn't forced. I find more Vine's genuinely hilarious compared to TikToks. "HuHUH, bitch why you mad? Cause my pussy pops severely and yours don't?" That line is BRANDED into my brain.
Great video.
This reminded me too of The dumb challenges that people mostly that I saw kids participate (Cinnamon challenge- Tide Pod…etc)
The cancellation/ apology era. The most dog apologies ever and people actively looking for new people to cancel
2013 to 2016 was a rough period for RUclips, there were so many terrible RUclipsrs at that time
leafy gotta be the worst example of this, he created a whole generation of terrible commentary channels that add nothing new to youtube.

This wasn’t really an era but there was this thing in the early days of YT (2006-2015) where people would post disturbing and gory videos. Lots of these were surreal animations , Brony/MLP videos, creepypastas or just out of context clips from films. When Susan Wojcicki became CEO of YT in 2014, less of these video were produced due to copyright/demonetisation stuff. For some reason, most of the comments of videos like those say stuff like “This traumatised me as a kid”.
I don't really see this as too bad as long as it had warnings. If you don't like gore and stuff just don't watch it

For the people part of that era, I’m pretty sure we all remember the music for Fantasy by DyE. It was disturbing at first but now, it’s kind of a jam!
Back in 2010 I was hooked on the spongebob gore animations, The megaldon rabbit hole was also fun, I used to spend fucking hours watching megaladon vs whatever other animal edits with eye of the tiger playing in the background

The worst thing to come out of Gucci Gang is all the oldheads of rap using it as an example of modern rap music and nothing else just to amplify their entitlement to their love for 90s rap
90s rap was and still is the best
SO REAL.
@@jacobrandalf386590s rap sounds so boring, i don't get how anyone used to listen to it. i also don't like gucci gang.
i think it’s important to note that through all of these eras there were still equally huge communities doing great things for the culture and the people, a lot of which overshadowed the worst of these eras
Yeah, like how in recent years we’ve had horrible politics, modern plagues, and wars, but we’re still socially improving on how we treat people who are different than us.

One good thing about the Musically and Tik Tok era is introducing people to new music choices (Seeing the song ""Even Flow" resurge in popularity for example makes me happy in a way sure I wasn't an OG Pearl Jam fan I can very much admit that as I first heard them with said song in GH3 back in the Early-2010s but seeing new people liking a song that gave me nostalgia feels nice)
This is true, many songs i listen to either came from tik tok or some other place on social media
I played GH3 and Even Flow is one of my favorites in that soundtrack but HOLD ON, what resurgence in popularity? I haven't seen it at all...
nah
Fun fact musicaly and tiktok are the same app
Some of the artists from our country actually got famous or was noticed during Musically era so it has its ups and downs
Tommy said vlogging and I immediately her the Ultra Instinct theme
We need a part 2
One era of the internet i don't see get brought up enough is what I like to call the Pop Teen era.
Maybe it's because most people on the internet today are too young to remember or forgot, but there was a time, i wanna say between 2006-2012, where a lot of teenagers were becoming pop music sensations, usually Disney and Nickelodeon stars.
Despite making inoffensive pop music and merely doing their jobs, the internet lunged at the throats of many of these kids, spawning all kinds of homophobic slurs, death threats and hit pieces like Death Battle did for Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black, heck i remember hearing accounts of these teens getting assaulted, all because... They were cringe?
It's one thing to not like teen celebrities, it's another to make multiple memes about how much you want them dead.
Unfortunately a part of this era lives on today, but not nearly as extreme as it was back then.
i think in general the internet used to be way more harsh on kids being "cringe" in the past. There was this mexican kid who made a minecraft rap around that era and got cyberbullied so bad, it's sad how much it affected him.
maybe it's just my perception, but nowadays everytime i stumble across some video of a kid doing something "cringy" i see more people in the comments being nice or laughing *with* the kid. i feel like internet culture is finally realising kids doing embarassing stuff is normal and harmless and that following along is more fun than just hating.
(Anything for Clout era 2020 - present day)
when people on social media especially on tictok will do anything for some Clout, doesn't matter if the challenge could or would risk your life for some Clout or attention.
Examples Benadryl challenge, devious lick, etc.
True I believe 2016 was a reboot year
I wonder how would that effect the internet now especially if the us tiktok ban goes through note that the majority of tiktok users are from the states
