@@misterdeity I watched that episode earlier. It isn't often I can work in a Captain Kangaroo reference. Your videos are very amusing and a good way to pass some of the boredom while at my job.
Another really great vid. Just one note on the sound... seems to be a really low rumble happening way down in the bass end. Pretty sure it would be easy to filter out. Otherwise great stuff as always.
Through the influences of my mind, including dreams and visions, I have pursued science more than religion or spirituality, because it introduced me to the concept of the black dwarf star and made me think about the process of stellar evolution, for one, and a possible relative nature to the speed of light which would mean that it travels faster in dead space than in gravity wells like the sun and the earth. While I am fairly uneducated, I can't take these things for granted or ignore them.
This reminded me of this quote; "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- Aldous Huxley We all go through our lives assessing facts around us. If we didn't, we would surely perish within a short time from stupid, dangerous moves. Gravity is a good example.
@misterdeity Eee how lovely! @Vanja4life No. But during our off-season, we're revamping to website, dumping flash, and getting every episode on the site. I don't know why Crackle killed the links, but it's not cool for those just tubing in.
@gr33nman TF and I were trying to connect up, but it was the worst possible timing -- right after TAM, and my 10 day vacation (the first in years), and right when I already had Michael and Christopher DiCarlo coming in to shoot episodes. Very narrow window, and we kept missing each other. D'oh!!!
The Believing Brain is one of the best books I have ever read. This should be required reading for every atheist who claims to be a skeptic. In fact Dr. Shermer's list of 26 cognitive biases should be recited like the nicene creed - especially the last one: the "bias blind spot."
Indeed, we can, may and should believe in great things; remarkable things; impossible things... but with knowledge and subjugation to Truth. Truth bless.
I'm a Christian. I'm Australian so that means I'm more likely than not to be different to your stereotypical American Fundie. I love Mr Deity, it cracks me up (there's nothing wrong with making a joke at your own expense if it warrants). I don't always agree with the theology, but I recognise satire when I see it and take it for what it is, and not an abhorrent attack on my beliefs. I even went so far as to financially support you in purchasing a DVD from you and then using that DVD in my Bible Studies with my youth group that I used to run (as a launching pad to talk about concepts, what the videos say, what the Bible says, and how we in 21st Century Australia view it). Yes, I don't know if I'm the only Christian who financially supports an atheist attempting to discredit my beliefs, but that's the way of it. In saying all these positives, I do have to say that I found the conclusion to this episode a little behind your usual witty self. What I've found most enjoyable about Mr Deity has been the sensitivity you've used to promote themes. Which makes the "what if we made em really stupid" line of this video seem like a sledgehammer when a scalpel would have done a much better job of satirising belief. Just my biased opinion, of course :)
Taken another way, it's a dig at us humans calling ourselves 'intelligent life'. If you recall from the PZ science advisor episode Mr. Deity said the real intelligence game was coming a billion years after humans go extinct, and we were just a plaything to bridge the gap.
@JJPHILLYLG Well, remember, that would have only been wrong had Mr. Deity gone with the six day version. He didn't (as you will see), so that line refers to no on in this universe.
St. Hubbins was the patron saint of quality footwear. Brian if that had been a "good catch" then cheapfeet would have managed to mention that (note the irony of the name too, hmmmmm delicious). Anyway, I couldnt resist that. Your show is brilliant, I'll prob get around to donating some day (I do be busy though) all the best Andy
@TGGeko Always have. I don't mind a philosopher of science -- we're having one on the show. But other than that, philosopher and theologians fit nicely together in my book.
If you suddenly started seeing a large number of unusual things, how would you explain them? How would you feel if everyone shrugged it off and said it was just a misinterpretation of something very ordinary and conventional? I personally know of no aircraft that just suddenly lights up overhead, moves slowly over a short distance, and then turns its lights off again, sometimes reappearing elsewhere as it moves. What would be the point?
@ChadWork1 It's entirely intentional. I actually put that in. Go watch something like Star Trek TNG. The low frequency rumble of the warp engines is throughout. This is the same sound that you'll hear in Mr. Deity's universe and the omniverse they inhabit in this prequel. But thanks for assuming I'm such a novice as to not know how to filter audio -- been in music for 36 years.
(cont.) We hypothesize on what its core is made of and how it works based on our knowledge of such things as nuclear fusion, but we really have no way of determining that we are 100% correct in our assumptions that even the rate of radioactive decay works the way we claim, because we don't live long enough to make sure we are right. We determine this by measuring the rate of energy loss in a radioactive isotope and then use math to project how long it should take to dissipate.
@FreddPepper I get that coal mining is declining. According to Wiki, England peaked coal production in 1913. However, in the 1910s - 1970s, England created an auto industry, increased it's ship building, got heavily into machining, tool and die making and metal work. Those industries only started migrating out of the UK during the 1970s n 80s. As soon as free trade agreements allow it. Till then, the workers, through their unions, had kept unfair, slave and child labor competition out.
And yes, I think about the notion of aliens because I have seen UFOs, not just misidentified objects, and while I know there is a high probability they are human-piloted objects than ETs, I think about the probability of ETs existing and whether they might have visited us at some time or another, and even applied this sort of thinking to the notion that the very word for "god" is a misnomer of a more advanced being that we do not understand and worship because of that misunderstanding...
@FantasyClay One-time deal. I promise. It's gonna take weeks to recover from that cut. I'm writing this from the intensive care unit of the Vidal Sassoon Academy.
Yes, I do understand that an unidentified object in the sky may in fact have a earthly origin, but I have also seen UFOs pass through solid matter and shoot straight into the ground with no impact. It was not a meteor that disintegrated before it hit the ground, as I have also witnessed meteors pass very close. Tell me someone of earthly origin that can do that. Also, why do you think they wouldn't visit this planet specifically if they exist and can do so?
@Mrfriendlymilk (1) "Oil and coal are self evidently connected with economic productivity." Add in solar, wind, nuclear, geothermal, ethanol, and just about everything that burns or produces heat. Availability of energy only effects economic productivity when there is none - and we'll never reach that point.
@FreddPepper I get what you're saying, but I'm reminded of when the automobile came into fashion. Sure the workforce in the horse industry died off, however, it was replaced by workers in the auto industry. Same, I would imagine, with coal. When the coal is gone, the miners lose their jobs, but it doesn't change the demand for energy. Coal miner jobs were replaced by jobs in nuclear, wind power, etc A coal town may die, but a nuclear town will be born. Economic evolution I'd say.
@vineethkuruvath No. That's a bit out of my depth. I've read a lot about other religions, but have never been immersed in them. There are too many little nuances to know about in order to create something like this, and I think I'd end up making a fool of myself -- people even think I do that here. But I can generally defend myself pretty well when people call me out. I couldn't do that with the others.

@Maphysto Thank you for staying with the story line. You have no idea how many emails I get asking why I look different in every episode now.
Instant classic! Mr Deity ought to have a building where his fans could gather in his name and sing his praises. What could we call it?

@forger42 This entire season (4) takes place before the big bang -- it's a prequel.
This video almost convinced me to become a christian. It just explains so much.
Speaking of hitting the "proverbial" nail on the head! So many excellent points in this. Religion truly is the cancer of the intellect of our planet.
The future is not as safe as we thought. R2-D2 is still out there with plans for the Deathstar.
