Icelander here. You can both relax; nábrækur, aka necropants, have probably never existed and are a work of witchcraft folklore 🙂 The object shown in the QI episode is simply someone's idea of how it might have looked like.
The beaches you thinking of are the black sand beaches in the south, most famous of which is Reynisfjara, and these can be very dangerous due to so-called sneaker waves. And yes, hydropower generates most of all electricity in Iceland, followed by geothermal power and more recently, wind power. Of course Icelanders use plenty of fossil fuels like all modern economies do, for their cars (electric vehicles not included), planes and ships. Other than that, is all fairly renewable and clean.
Also, Iceland wasn't named in order to keep people away as such, it's more like Greenland was named to attract people, promising easy farming in a land of green fields. Truth in advertising was obviously not a top priority back then 😎

      @PortilloMoment 5 месяцев назад +2

If I remember correctly, at the time of discovery and naming the Earth was going through a slightly warmer period and what is now Greenland was indeed green, at least around the margins and for some distance inland.

@@PortilloMoment Yes indeed. When Icelanders (who were the first Europeans to discover both Greenland and North America, but of course not the first humans to do so) were roaming in the area, it was during the so-called 'Medieval Warm Period'.
However Greenland wouldn't have been vastly different than it is today... mostly covered by glaciers but with fairly large pockets of green along some of the southern coastlines. This must have looked quite nice to the Viking explorers, particularly before they spent the first winter there :-)

Brian Blessed is probably the most interesting person on the planet. Classic trained actor, played Prince Vultan in the Flash Gordon movie, has boxed with the Dalai Lama, but his greatest achievement is probably his attempts to climb Mount Everest. I think he still holds the record for reaching the highest altitude on Mt Everest without any extra oxygen. He nearly made it to the top once, but he turned back when he found out a climber behind him was in trouble, and he went to assist them. He also shares his house with hundreds of animals. He’s a proper legend.

A couple of hundred have summitted without oxygen, first done by 2 climbers in 78

Good to know, however he is part of my fantasy dinner party guests with Stephen Fry too? As an enormous presence, a gentleman through and through and knowledgeable same as Gyles Brandreth, imo.

@sg-yq8pm He was 68 at the time so holds the record for the oldest person to reach the height he did without oxygen.

His plan was to become the oldest to reach the summit of Everest, but that seems to have become impossible even for him. His backup plan is that he's now training in Kazakhstan to become the oldest person in space (the record currently held by William Shatner).

Punched a polar bear, went to the Russian space city and did all the tests for a cosmonaut and did the best on the centrifuge of anyone ever. Man is a legend there are interviews with him where the interviewer basically gave up and let him talk for hours 😂

Brian Blessed is absolutely nuts. But very funny and has a great singing voice. He originated the role of Old Deuteronomy in Cats and was the voice of the villain in Disney’s Tarzan as well as doing Tarzans yell in the movie.

Because you seemed confused at that point, I'll mention that the reason everyone laughed when Sean said "-And then you start a bank." is that it was quite a news item in Europe that the main three banks in Iceland all had taken risks by taking up massive amounts of credit in foreign banks leading up to the financial crisis in 2007-2008, which ended up ...not working out.
At the end of it, and I'm quoting wikipedia here "Iceland's external debt was 9.553 trillion Icelandic krónur (€50 billion), more than 7 times the GDP of Iceland in 2007." and "...the market capitalisation of the Icelandic stock exchange fell by more than 90%".

    • @dave_h_8742

So they arrested and jailed the bankers who did it, unlike us idiots who let them off.

Ropes work the exact same way. I had a small 10 tonne crane and two (very thick) ropes which were not long enough. My dad's mate showed me how you could just join the ropes using only friction. It made me really nervous when he just wove them together. I wouldn't use them until he showed me it would pull the crane over before the joint broke.

The necromancer pants were supposed to give you money. A sorcerer must wait for the body to be buried. Then dig it up. The punishment for doing this, was eternal damnation in hell. The only way to avoid hell was to convince someone to take the pants from you. The one in the Iceland museum allegedly is real. But it's folk lore mostly. Good show. 👍

The thought of someone spending all the time needed to put those directories together . Its the quietest clip I've seen of Brian for a long time , poor old Sean . Alan's role is to be the mischievous one on QI. and his manic persistence finally paid off . As for the trousers , despite the prospect of cash I'd rather have a sheepskin or leather coat I think . I enjoyed the reaction between you .
