No Jeff Healey? No Alvin Lee? No Tommy Emmanuel? No Vince Gill? No Roy Clark? No Ted Nugent? I could throw half of the people on this list and replace them with real "guitarists"! Come on guys!
A list that brings John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and The Edge but ommits Steve Morse, Steve Howe, Larry Carlton, Jan Akkerman, Steve Lukather, Don Felder, Gary Moore, Tom Johnston, Pacco de Lucia, Gary Rossington, Peter Frampton, Steve Hackett etc cannot be serious
Steve Vai, Jeff Healey, George Benson, Brian Setzer, Johnny Lang, Phill Keaggy, Michael Roe, Glenn Kaiser, Bob Hartman, Rex Carroll, Pepeu Gomes, Kiko Loureiro, Sister Rosetta Tarpe, Memphis Minnie, Robert Smith, Blind Willie Johnson...
I would say egregious omissions on the top 100 list are Robin Trower, Neal Schon, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Glen Campbell, Paul Gilbert and Steve Vai. I would also through Nancy Wilson in there as well, she is completely underrated as well. I would also have Alex Lifeson much higher up on the list.
Once again the Skynyrd boys are overlooked! When the fact that the lead guitar work in the song 'Freebird' is consistently listed in the top ten guitar leads of all time! How can the guys who recorded it be ignored! (Joni Mitchell? ... Willie Nelson? ..Come on!!)
Jeff Beck is the #GOATGuitarist all time IMO. BTW I can name 20 guitarists at the top of my head that are better players than Jimi Hendrix. Sick & tired of polls picking him #1.
I can't take any list like this serious when it omits Terry Kath, Nile Rodgers, Jerry Reed, Syd B., Rossington, Collins, King and Gaines (Take ur pick from Lyn Skyn), Jesse Johnson (The Time), Dave Gregory (XTC), George Benson, Alvin Lee, Roy Clark, Brian Setzer, Kevin Shields..
So other guitarist made this list including Ritchie Blackmore and Brian May and no mention of Michael Schenker, Alvin Lee or even Buckethead, this list is as bad as the last one.
Apparently, influence is the primary criteria for this list as I could think of 200 or so guitarists who could play rings around at least half of these great musicians.
About 30% of the Stones list wasn't a surprise at all, and 80% of the top wasn't either. But Hetfield listed and then you added Kirk Hammett? Where the hell is Dave Mustaine? WAAAYYYYY better player than Hammett. Both lists seem to largely favor popularity over actual talent (although I am not saying some didn't deserve to be on the list). Bonnie Raitt but no Mustaine? lol. Funny stuff.
Here are 10 more guitarists you can add to your list in no particular order... Terry Kath Chicago, Buck Dharma Blue Oyster Cult, Rod price Foghat, Dave Hlubeck Molly Hatchet, Gary Moore ,Pat Travers Ronnie Montrose ,Ted Nugent ,Ace Frehley ,Joe Satriani...Your're Welcome
I agree with most of the other comments. There were so many “guitarist” that were missed. Opinions vary on “Top Ten” and arguments will rage on depending on era and style of music preferred by individual choice.

I get that it’s hard to name a top one hundred, but there are some big question marks with this list 1) More old blues men please, and the fact that Robert Johnson is at the bottom of the blues pile is ridonculous 2) Bruce Springsteen in, but no Nils Lofgren, who was the lead guitarist of the E Street band 3) Peter Green 58?! Blackmore 50?! Knopfler 44?! Guilmour 14?! These guys have been criminally underrated, but especially Green. 4) John Lennon? Really? Other than that, relatively inoffensive list😂
Lots of omissions and people I personally would not have put on this list but its very subjective - by greatest they also mean influential to later acts and a wee bit of politics throw in I guess - Michael Schenker certainly belongs on a list of 100 greatest guitarists.
Where are Warren Haynes, Joe Bonamassa, Alvin Lee, Peter Frampton, Gary Moore and the Ladys? Don't play guitars? I don't know if is this rafting a joke or a shame. It sempre more a kind of this: how is the most knowing guitarist? Sorry but Clapton in Front of Beck?
There seems to be people on the list simply due to influence rather than skill, which is fine other than the fact that many people as influential or more are not included. Any list that doesn't include Terry Kath, Jesse Ed Davis or Glen Campbell, just to name a few, is in my opinion, invalid. I mean, for Christ's sake, this list has Tom Verlaine on it. Are you kidding me?
Les Paul about Danny Gatton-"he could do anything the other guy could do, and do it better." Tommy Emmanuel plays lead, rhythm, bass and percussion at the same time while singing no less. Keith Richards and Mick Taylor's rankings should be flipped. Chet Atkins should be higher. Two Larry's missing-Carlton and Coryell. And Glen Campbell was only good enough to play on 100's of albums for Frank Sinatra, Elvis, the Beach Boys, Nat King Cole and dozens more while making over 60 albums of his own. And he couldn't even read sheet music.
