Great video. I scored a 78 jmp head and early 70's Marshall cab with metal handles and 70 greenbacks. 6 months later a 78 cherry sunburst Les Paul Then a 76 Sg and then a 71/72 echo plex.Being I was a kid in the 70's and into rock in elementary school all these years formative to me. Love me some gear but can't help feeling I'm about to get hit by a bus! Haha
I've been watching this video this morning, man that tone is insane. It forces me to play hard because of the less overdrive and I play better, you can really hear it in the section around 8:30, I'm seriously digging in to get the notes to connect like that. Killer amp.
cheers for the reply ,Thats a really great sounding Marshall you have there ,they do not all sound like that , you sound like you are really enjoying the amp
James that was cool. them mastervolumes got their own moji. i just modded a Michael Schenker amp that i didnt want to mod cause it sounded badass your vids are cool brother!
I've owned several high-end boutique amps...sold em all and ended up with a 1980 2204...same amp as in this video. You can get absolutely ANY great Marshall tone you've ever heard in your entire life, right here in this amp....PERIOD! Along with a '59 historic Les Paul...this is the amp I'll play for the rest of my life! Go blow all the $ you want...in my humble...this is the absolute best amp ever made!
I noticed you also have a Phaez Pasadena. Can you get that Phaez to approximate this crunch? What about a crunch with lower gain? Looking for definition and punch without harshness. I love this JMP.
If you get that master up over 5 it'll get more juicy and full. I think James also uses some pretty hot humbuckers too, this is key. Also remember that everything sounds heavier when recorded than it does when you are playing and feeling it. That's what I have found anyway.
James Lugo i know, but iirc from a point on (1977?-can't remember) Marshall started sending these to the stores with a cascaded preamp because people were complaining about a lack of gain, or something like that.
If I am not mistaken all of the 2-input JMPs are cascaded gain design. Basically, from what I understand, the original JMPs...model 1987 (50 watt) and model 1959 (100watt) had 4 instrument inputs on the front panel. These amps were non-cascading and people quicly learned that if you plug in a short cable jumping across 2 of the inputs you could play through the treble and bass channels of the preamp at once thereby getting more gain from the amp. Then, a bit later, Marshall changed the preamp on these models so that the signal now ran through the first preamp tube and then straight into the second preamp tube to give the amp even more filth (this path from one preamp tube into the next is what they mean by cascading.) The newer cascading JMPs were designated models 2204 (50 watt) and 2203 (100 watt). These newer model JMPs also have only 2 instrument inputs on the front panel as opposed to the 4 on the older non-cascading models. The amp in this video is one of the cascading gain amps yes. These particular Marshalls, in my opinion, are the greatest sounding amps ever made. I know that's a bold statement considering some of the competition out there (all the great Boogies, Oranges and the like) but to my own ears the Marshall 22xx just sound f*cking magical. If I had any spare cash I'd have one myself. I have had the opportunity to play through a few of them but, sadly, am too poor to own one at present. Awesome sounding amp my friend! I know exactly how you felt the first time you plugged into that beast and banged a chord. I envy you sir lol! Rock on!
+gtamodman122 I think the preamp is 'cascaded' on all these Marshall amps. I'd assume you're referring to having V1 gain stages in series, rather than parallel, which would have more saturation and sound gainier.
James Lugo NO! STOCK? (you were breathing heavily with excitement and anticipation while waiting for her to warm up. LOL!) What type of output/preamp tubes?

These late 70's JMPs are killer! I had a 1980 2204 but upgraded to an '81 2203. Great, great tone! Awesome video James, as always.
I've got a 77 JMP 2204 on the way. Hope it has the same crunch as this amp. Sounds great man.

Superb sounding amp!
killer amps! i don't get why marshall decided to use these on/off standby/on switches the old toggle ones look way nicer!
Focal montoirs sound great! You my friend are a lucky man!

Yeah, awesome,I can hear quite a bit of Boogie coloration because of the cab.
Geez!!! What settings of the master and preamp were you using to get that awesome crunch sound!?! Can I get that outta my JCM 800?
Just love that tone oh my god that eargasmic wow
Those JMP's are absolute fucking beasts man

Yup, awesome amp.
Hi Lugo, the recto cab its stock v30's or are you using different Speakers?
My 77 does not saturate like that, sounds great!
Travis is yours 2204 50watt or 2203 100watt? Maybe thats why.
+KyleSG88 Marshall JMP 2204 is a 50 Watts. Marshall JMP 2203 is 100 Watts.
Instant early AC/DC ! Nice !
I just realized you're the guy who did a great demo of the Charvel so cal for the Rock of ages gig. Have you tried that with this rig.
What preamp tubes is this head running?
What have you done to your 2204? These amps always sounds great, but this one sounds like it`s godsent!! Sonic Heaven!
Thanks. Nothing, just the bias mod so it can run el34s
Is that the ceriatone superlead on top of the JMP?
Awesome! Do you have any mods installed in your JMP. Also, are you using EL-34 tubes or 6550's?
NIIIIIIICE!!!!!
Hi , are you boosting the amp with something
No just the bias mod to run el34s.
This is better than porn
the bogner cabinet sounded better to me
Vintage king.
They probably want your gear..
