I'm honestly impressed by the quality of these videos. Haven't seen a bad 'Naval Legends' and probably never will. Thanks for for the high quality content!
Finally someone showed off this, I had a grandfather who served on the HMAS Uralba, when he passed away in 2015 he was scattered over the wreck (scuttled in 1971 for a reef) as he loved serving on that ship
Been onboard her a few times. If I remember correctly, the engines are electrically powered now to turn over so they can demonstrate to the visiting public what it was like for the engines to be working. The volunteers are a good bunch of people who take great care of her. Well done, a nice video. Hopefully the first ship in a Commonwealth tech tree or at least a premium ship to join HMAS Vampire (not HMS as is on the Vampire's life rings).
If they go through the trouble of making her like she looks now and fit her with Electric motors just to show her beauty (because damn, that looks good), you know she is in superb hands... Great to see those volunteers, in a great series; keep this up Wargaming & Volunteers!
I'm actually from Castlemaine and I never knew that we had a corvette named after our land locked town. Good to know, that we have a ship named after us.
This is a very high quality and informative video. Really enjoyed it. As a former power station worker I had great sympathy for what the crew must have suffered. In the power station we also listened for changes in noise levels, and flickers on the lights. After leaving it took years for the adrenaline response to stop.
I live in Melbourne and have visited the Castlemaine at Williamstown, but that was many years ago. Knowing more about the ship from this video I think i will visit again.
Who remembers having the Castlemaine alongside at HMAS Cerberus. And using the Ship for Survival At Sea Training at Recruit School. It was a fair drop from the Starboard Bridge Wing into the water.
Thank you WG for making Naval Legends to its track again Maybe this isnt appropriate but already purchased the latest USS Wichita because I dont want losing faith where sums of our contribution (purchases of premiums) DOES help this series grow as well! Thank you again for delivers what I love.
I may have been on this ship the last time it travelled under its own power. In 1967 with 2 officers(CMDR M W Hudson and myself) and a small number of crew, we steamed from Cerberus to Williamstown for some minor maintenance. Had a tug to escort us just in case, but outran it up the bay. I think we achieved design speed and the tug asked if she could have the engines! I wasn't on the return trip so maybe it was the second last time under power. The bridge had been stripped so navigation was by a magnetic compass on a makeshift wooden stand - the bridge was not enclosed at that time. Someone else has remarked that she was towed to the museum in 1974 and I doubt she required docking between 1967 and 1974.
At 15 knots max speed that poor lass was escaping from no one. Even a sub would have easily out run it on the surface. Surprisingly slow and short ranged. I like that they had the sense to enclose the bridge though.
We had a small navy but we used it effectively . Now 2020 we are certainly by world standards better configured and equipped than than ever before . The men and women of the RAN are the ones that the difference . Not the equipment .
Wifes grandfather served on destroyers , they let us get married on this ship. We used to visit this ship and the old sailors are just incredible good blokes that tell you amazing stories about their service.
insurance cost will probably hurt to much, as it's volunteer run not government run + getting a crew that will take it out in sailing in harbour or out of harbour would not be worth for a musuem ship
not an impressive ship in terms of size, speed or arms. but thats ok. Its ships like these that were the workhorses of the war. Unlike the big capital ships like Yamato and Iowa that really just sat in the back not fighting. aside from fighting aircraft. Its the smaller boats that won the wats.
Ah yes, I see their old Naval Legend series did have ships that are no longer around. But I think the new series only has ships that have been preserved.

Are there even some left?? I know about the submarine (U-505) at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, but apart from that, I'm not sure how much of the Kriegsmarine ships are left today...
@@haraldlorentzen40 There is also U-995 in Laboe (Kiel, Germany), a Type VII U-boat and "Wilhelm Bauer" a Type XXI in Bremen (Germany). Also, with them running out of still existing ships one day, I thought they could also talk about some, that have been sunk, like the Yamato-Episode.
Did they really say 15 knots top speed?? uhhh, most of the modern subs of ww2 were faster than that on the surface, some even going as fast as that while submerged! I guess they figured they could upgrade the engines later on as time permitted?

What do you mean by seaworthy? I know some museum ships are still taken out to sea several times a year, is that the case with the Averof too? I hope so but that ship's pretty old.
LegoGenius16 the Georgios Averof can not move under its own power and can only be towed. Recently Averof traveled from Faliro to Thessaloniki and back. The ship’s hull was maintained and inspected for this journey to insure safety. That is what I meant seaworthy :)
@@toulouba1 OK, thanks for clarifying. I've actually seen the SS Jeremiah O Brian moving under its own power, and it is absolutely amazing for a ship so old (and built in just a month).

I would love to see the old intro of naval legend :D

Great documentary. Grandfather served on the Bathurst Class, HMAS Launceston, this was helpful in putting a face (ship) to what he experienced.

Very well maintained vessel. The ship looks as if it's just waiting for the engineering crew to come light the boilers so they can get under way.
Hope this will start the Australian tech tree line for World of Warships

The fact that people need subtitles for oldmate is beautiful.

It's an icon of Williamstown, and i highly recommend the fish and chips at the start of the pier!

Im an Aussie. Love episodes about my country
I am in Oregon, USA and like to see Australian history.
Same this ship is in my home city.
My great grandfather was a stoker on this ship. I’ve seen it in person. Very well maintained and beautiful ship.
Very nice presentation--wow, that engine room is beautiful! Well done, mates!
I was part of the crew when she was towed by HMAS Ardent around to the museum in 1974 when I was at the Gunnery & Seamanship School at HMAS Cerberus
As always the naval legends are amazing pieces of history. Many thanks

Corvettes can be a new class in wows
A very interactive ship too, they even let you turn the bofors gun yourself with the crank.
Great video. I recommend HMAS Yarra.
11.02 is my Dad's workplace on the Castlemaine in 1945. I believe he was the first on board to know of Japan's surrender.
One of the sister ships was given to the Turkish Navy. After decommissioning was used by merchant marine academy, under the name " Hamit Naci."
Really enjoyed watching this video- she is certainly well maintained. Great little ship
Good video. I have visited HMAS Castlemaine and she is well worth going to see in Williamstown, near Melbourne.
Her being a training ship makes sense why the engine equipment can still spin as a museum. I bet Texas cannot turn her equipment over
She would snap in half now
Or just sink
if her hull was restored her engines might run them old steamers are hard to kill
@@davidjones341 yes they are very much are hard to kill one of the reasons I love them
I think the engines mounts on the texas are so rusted. That if an engine runs it will break of the mounts

Just fyi I did

Another Naval Legends!!
There should be WW2 ships parade. Maybe in 2045? Imagine - Texas, Iowa, Belfast, Błyskawica etc. all steaming together...
Sadly Texas could collapse under her own weight if moved.
Be crazy if Mighty T can move under her own power without collapsing. Throw in Aurora.

@Wayne Haile A ship is any vessel which can carry another vessel on board, which the Bathurst class did, thus making them Ships
Bismarck, Hood, Tirpitz, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau There's no video of legendary ships like these.
